View Full Version : Racism in the family

My parents and all of my grandparents are racists. It really sickens me that I have to share a bloodline and that I"m even related to these people... It's sad. So I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and how they deal with it.

When they grew up, being a racist wasn't frowned upon like it is now.

I don't, well, I did when I was way younger admittedly, a long time ago.. I guess I'm just torn apart in that fact, if it was just a friend it wouldn't matter that much since we aren't related... but yeah. =\
All of my friends, except for one, are racist. My whole family is, as well.
It's truly sickening.

I live in a town of .73% black people. There's a shitton of racists here, I just ignore it and move on with my life.
Luckily, I didn't know what racism was until I got older.

i know what it's like on both sides. one of my best friends' parents are racist. mind you i'm well spoken, well-mannered, well-educated, and just plainly dont act or even look like a thug, but i went to her house once and they said "get that n***** out of my house, what would your grandparents think?" and she got into a huge fight with them because of that. i was fucking pissed and just dumbfounded by their ignorance and judgement but i mean her parents are great parents to her, very supportive, love her entirely, have always kept a good relationship, and i cant expect her to sever any ties with them for me. its just something you have to try to avoid as well as you can.
at the same time, most of my friends and especially my dad are homophobes, like my dad would probably disown me if i was gay and doesnt get the concept of a gay joke etc. etc. im not homosexual myself, but i mean whenever their prejudice comes up i do try to talk to them about it, about how homosexuality is not a choice or a rebellion or a fashion statement, its the way they turn out. and to my religious friends i tell them if it even is a sin and not just a clause put in the bible by a human, its no greater of a sin than lying which they are undeniably guilty of from time to time, and its not their place to judge anyway. but its not at all something im willing to readily give up every other part of my friendship with them about, especially considering im not even really friends with any gay people theyve come in contact with.

i was tempted but honestly if you think about it one of the stereotypes of minorities, especially those with african american in them, is that they're violent and have short tempers, and it's counter-productive to act out and prove that stereotype, that only perpetuates their views. theres really no need to stoop to that level, just let the ignorant be ignorant and be happy you're not that low.

Man.. I'm sorry about that. You could always get her to come to your house, or make her sneak out if you want to hang out. And that's such a good point, about the sinning and lying... shows how hypocritical the world is sometimes.

That's awesome! I would love to protest and go into marches for gay rights or against racism... good luck with that, really! I hope it goes well. And, kind of, I know most of my speech class last year were probably all right-wing christians who hated the thought of seperation of church and state and atheism, if that counts.
Nah, you're popular. You have more of a life than I do! I want to go swimming, that sounds nice. Sounds like a fun day to me!
Swimming is fun, although it can be awkward when people you know from school or college or work are there... our city pool is pretty cool.
my dad's girlfriend was racist towards my girlfriend who is half and half which pretty much ended in her moving out.
That's awesome! Especially since sometimes parents can care more about their girl/boyfriends than their children... assuming his girlfriend is the one that moved out.

You know what's funny is I had a feeling there's be a lot of joke replies, because of this forum... but hopefully in jest only, since racism is lame.

By hating them for it, you're making yourself just as bad because your singling them out because they are different than you or have a different belief than you. Did you ever think about that?
I don't really hate them, although I guess I'm "singling" them out... My grandmother on my dad's side, I always loved her and thought she was a real nice lady, but when I hear her talk about "those damn yankees!" or how arabians and "non-american indians" are dirty, it's kind of a downer. It's kind of sad too because you think you know someone, and I never really knew she thought this way until this year. So how I feel about her has kind of went from "nice lady" to "nice, racist lady"... I guess. What's your view on racism? And haven't you ever hated, disliked or felt uncomfortable around someone because of their views?
also I noticed your the same guy from the sell out thread.. sorry if this sounds creepy, but I just think it's awesome someone basically put into terms how I felt about that.

Went to a BBQ with a bunch of friends from work. I drank a lot, something I have not done in a while. So it felt really good to let loose and just have fun. The fireworks stands here didn't open, no clue why, so my buddy bought some and we lit a couple off - nothing too extravagant, but it was his last weekend in town for awhile so we partied hard until last night haha

My grandparents and dad came here from Argentina about 45 years ago, yet they complain about illegal immigrants, my grandmother hates the Chinese (she ALWAYS has to make a remark when she finds out something is made in China...she also called Chinese food "chinky food" and laughed), and I've heard my aunt complain about "spics" before, despite her parents speaking Spanish to each other 60% of the time. Oh, and my dad would probably clap if the entire Middle East erupted into a giant mushroom cloud. At least my uncle (and mom, for the most part) doesn't seem to harbor such prejudices. I love them all, but sometimes I just want to shake my head and walk away.
