View Full Version : Neil Young (Official Thread)

Figured there'd already be one given his stature in the musical community but the search function yielded no results aside from a thread about a tribute album. This is hereby where we discuss this man's beautiful music.
Here's a live video of Don't Let It Bring You Down off After The Gold Rush, which is in my opinion one of the greatest albums ever. Takes him a while to get into it but it's worth the wait. Enjoy.

I need to get a Neil Young album, I've old heard the tunes that I play on the air, but Needle And The Damage Done is probably my favorite song.

He's definitely a great songwriter but something about his voice...I don't know, I mean it's good and not unlistenable but his voice kind of prevents me from listening to a whole album at once.

His voice sort of mellows out later in his career so anything from 1990 onward might be more pleasant a listen for you. Give Harvest Moon or even Prairie Wind a try to see if that clicks.

The releases with Crazy Horse are actually among my least favorite. Along with those you mentioned (barring Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere), I'd add On The Beach. The raw feel isn't for everyone but I really dig it; sort of like Neil's Nebraska.

i do enjoy him, but seldom listen. even though they're not that similar, i always pick up van morrison before i do young, but that's not to say i don't enjoy neil when i do listen. most of my favourite albums have already been mentioned. my favourite would be a toss-up between tonight's the night or after the goldrush, but i'd like to give a shout out to some of his live albums too, so bloody good

Entirely different artists but both are legends who deserve listens on that basis alone. Neil's tunes range from glossy to grimy so there's something for everyone to enjoy provided you don't mind the vocals.

IWasaCamera
02/01/09, 11:38 PM
The album in question is Harvest which is occasionally rather string-heavy if that's your thing. Not particularly similar to The Kinks or The Zombies. I'd recommend starting with After The Gold Rush as everyone in here seems to have.

Harvest is fantastic. It's telling just how beloved The Needle and the Damage Done is due to the large number of acts that have covered it. I was compelled to listen to the album recently after hearing a surprisingly good cover by Ray LaMontagne when I saw him live last fall.

With most luminary artists that have a large catalogue, I generally stick with the most praised/well-known works and after letting them digest, if I enjoy them enough, I'll move on to the other albums.

Since Harvest is tops for you so far, I'd say try Comes A Time, Harvest Moon, or Prairie Wind next. If you're in the mood for something a little murkier, a little grimier, try Tonight's The Night. It's a drunken rock 'n' roll ode to two fallen friends.

04/02/09, 11:47 AM
Haha, when you asked i thought to myself i remember reading an article on sunonthesand about one of the Young albums but i wasn't sure if you or Ben wrote it. It was a good read.
Unrelated to Young, but any idea when the Decemberists review will be up and is anyone reviewing the new Manchester Orchestra record because it got a ridiculously great review on this website, i don't particularly agree so i was hoping to get someone elses opinion.
IWasaCamera
04/02/09, 11:54 AM
Ah, thank you. On The Beach really captures that decade I find.
Decemberists was slated to go up a while ago but Ben didn't feel too comfortable with it so he deferred to another writer. Hopefully it'll be up in a week or so. As for Manchester Orchestra, Micah (istheballs) has that lined up but I can't state with any certainty when it will be published.
jbaseball44

Agreed about On the Beach.
Look forward to reading both of those reviews. The new Decemberists album is ok in my opinion, i started out liking it and the more i listened to it the less i liked it. I trust Micah's opinions on most things involving music because i believe he is the one that shares my ridiculous love for Dylan

Good deal.
Sort of tying back into Neil, also give Odawas' new one The Blue Depths a try. Gorgeous album and my favorite of the year thus far. Vocals are often likened to Young's but it relies more on a spacey/ambient feel. Sorry for bombarding you with recs haha.
As for the man himself, what are your thoughts on his later work?
jbaseball44
04/02/09, 01:10 PM
Haha and not it's more than ok, i'll take all the recs i can get. In terms of his later work, i enjoy his stuff with Crazy Horse the least. I like Praire Wind and Harvest Moon quite a bit but other than those two albums i find myself listening to his older stuff a lot more than the newer stuff. You?
IWasaCamera
04/02/09, 01:20 PM
I'm not too keen on a majority of his work with Crazy Horse honestly. Seems as though he sacrifices some of his musical identity to accommodate a signature sound. Much like with Dylan, there are albums I adore and albums I wish had never been released.
jbaseball44
04/02/09, 01:25 PM
Completely agree about Crazy Horse. In terms of Dylan, i do agree with you but a lot of the time i find myself looking past those albums as if they didnt exist because he is one of if not my favorite artist of all time (even though it's a lot of albums to look past). What did you think of the most recent Dylan song that came out a few days ago.

Not surprising but i liked it, very different from Modern Times and as Dylan said in an interview, it sounds like a Chess record from the fifties.
