I agree....
--------------------------------------------------------------------
About the Tillman thing, I agree with a lot of things in that article..but Tillman not being a hero isn't one of them. He isn't a hero for serving this nation, he is a hero for doing what he thought was right and thats bring Al Qeada to justice.
I do agree with this part though
"Al-Qaeda won't be defeated in Afghanistan, even if we did kill all their operatives there. Only through careful and logical changing of the underlying conditions that allow for the ideology to foster will Al-Qaeda be defeated. Ask the Israelis if 50 years of blunt force have eradicated the Palestinian resistance."

That was the beat thing I've read in years.
Yeat, the guy was a moron- sorry.

apparantly moron means you give up a wonderful life to make your country a better place and safer for future generations. no, pat tillman was not a hero is the traditional sense of the word, but he dies for his country, and that means he's a hero nonetheless.
and yes, bush is a fucking douchebag.

i think i need to clear this up, i tried to edit the original post, but i don't know if we are all on the same page. i am upset with the guy that wrote this article in the student newspaper on the campus of UMASS, which is why i am upset that my tax dollars support him. He is the moron, not tillman. first and foremost, the man obvoiusly did little to no research into tillmans life. beyond that, the title of his article alone makes me want to vomit.

To call Tillman an idiot is to be an idiot yourself. Don't call him a hero if you don't want, but he certainly was brave. I'm pretty sure that's the word I would use to describe what he did.

Thank you. Now, everytime I think to myself..."You have no chance in a career of writing", I will always have this article to look back on and realize anything is possible.

im pretty sure your position is well known, if you felt the need to clarify it, so be it. i was saying i want my tax dollars back from the troops. you see the liberal in me says, the troops are being taken advantage of, and are only following orders, because the most of them come from lower income families and its the only way they can make a life for themselves. But the Conservative in me says, They signed up for it of there own free will, and therefore are as much responsible for acts of war and death as their dear commander and leader. And because i dont particularly care for your ideas on politics i decided to go with my conservative side on this one.

Look, God forbid the guy go fight, none of us would ever want to. If he didn't go like many other young men, we would have had to. Whether we'd like to admit it or not George Bush is our president. Yes he sucks, yes he's an idiot but right now what can we do? If our country calls for war, we either gotta go and fight or move the hell out, or revolt, which would call for fighting anyway. So all you assholes who like to sit in front of a computer and criticize should just shut the fuck up and be glad someone was willing to keep you safe in your own home.

I think you need to seriously think about what you just said. You say you acknowledge that these men put their lives on the line on their own free will, and you want tax dollars back from them. If anything it is you who owe these people more money. Whether you care to admit it or not, they are protecting you. Maybe not in this war, and maybe not it the next, but when the time does come these people are going to be the ones who step up and risk it all, not people like you. I myself am a U.S. Marine. Can you please tell me why I owe you money. Tell me why after a choosing a lifestyle lack of daily comforts to serve selfish people like yourself, why do I owe you money?

my friend, my reply was satiristic and a play on the bullshit of true conservatism. And seriously, If this country was ever actually in trouble it would not be a select few who have signed up for active service who would be protecting it, it would be absolutely every man and woman who had a life worth living. not for an imperialistic hegemonic agenda, that is manipulated into fear.
Can you please tell me why you are a U.S. Marine?
I am genuinly interested in your response.

Well i'm glad to find out you weren't serious. But it will still be the ones in the military who step up in a time of need. They've already done so by signing to the military. Now, why did I chose to become a Marine? Because I have had an easy life so far. Never really had a worry in my life. Never had to worry about protecting myself or my family. Thats because I live in a country where people are willing to put my safety before their own. I have decided that I should give back to that country. And because other branches lack the discipline that the Marines have(although they are all great at their jobs and deserve everyones respect) that is why i chose to become a U.S. Marine.

wow, did they script that for you?
ok, i can understand that you want to give back, and empathize with feeling of, "what the hell have i ever done to deserve my life". Maybe i should have phrased my question to ask, "why did you feel it necessary to join an organization that, if put in the situation you may have to kill another human being to fulfill your duty?" There are many other routes to go in the vein of helping people (many in fact where you do not have to surrender your body and mind to the government).

Yeah, your right, if you look in the Marine Corps Recruit Knowledge book they teach you why you joined the Corps. I would really appreciate if you don't try to understand what it is like to be in the military. I don't mind if you have opinions on what they do and don't do in the world. But don't act like you know what goes on inside. By that I mean don't try and act like you know how they brainwash people, or "script" your responses to people who ask why you serve.
Second point: I don't know how they work things in Greenpeace, and I won't act like I do, but I'm pretty sure they don't have the discipline that the Marines do. I don't know if they ever had to get up at 5 in the morning to the sound of a screaming Drill Instructor, and listen to it all day long. I don't know if they had to stand at attention for hours at a time. I don't know if they had to run for miles at a time. I don't know if they had to go through a 12 week boot camp. But what I do know is that in the Marines you have to. And until I find an organization that has the honor, discipline, and "toughness" that the Marines have, I will stick to my beloved Corps.
One more thing, there is a diffence in wanting to kill, and being able to kill. Just cause I'm able to kill doesn't mean I want to.

brohymn... what i cant even come close to understanding about your last paragraph is what exactly that has to do with "helping" and/or "giving back". what i dont understand is the machismo attitude that yearns for discipline and "toughness". The "honor" thing i understand.
what does being "drilled" all day for a sustained period of time have to do with anything?

What I meant by that is my idea of helping is not standing behind a desk stockpiling cans of food. I want to help out, and I also want to help myself out. What better way than to chose the path that helps people and makes me a better person in the long run.
