As a lifelong fan of music, what hurts the most is when a band with endless potential gives up their chosen method of expression in order to play it safe. Safety doesn't sell albums from new artists in today's industry, and safety rarely wins fans over. One of the more recent signings to Victory Records, Thieves and Villains, are the newest (and surely not the last) band to wander down that winding road to bargain bin hell with their debut full-length, Movement.

One of the biggest problems with Movement is the mind-numbing lack of hooks. Producer Paul Leavitt helps the band put a true "soundscape" out there, but as a result, the amphitheater sound for a basement band sucks any sense of urgency or energy from the music. Songs like "Dry Throats Unite," "Shimmer," and "Atlantic Lungs" will get your foot tapping, but when it comes to substance, that seems to have been left out of the equation. In fact, your mind will start to bleed every single song together over the course of the album, partly because guitar parts from Chris Pennings aren't ambitious at all. Sporadic drumming adds little to the music, and the lack of depth and command of the vocals gives Movement a completely lifeless feel.

TAV's Sergio Otaegui has a sharp nasal tone to his singing voice that used to give the band's music a leg to stand on, and a way to stand out from every other pop-rock band with repetitive melodies and a dream, much like New Found Glory's Jordan Pundik did for years. Unfortunately, the record features little of that, instead leaving Otaegui's vocals tuned into the middle of the pack in a misguided attempt to save his band's lackluster music by preaching accessibility. "Who Am I To Say Night" is a perfect example of this; when he dances at the upper reaches of his register in the chorus, it comes out, but otherwise the vocals are as generic as you can find in a record today.

You can do a fair sight better than this album if you're looking for pop-rock CDs to fawn over this year. Thieves and Villains' Movement struggles to even reach second-rate, and I fully expect this album to fall mostly on deaf ears. Sounding like they wanted to capitalize on a trend, the band opted for glossy overproduction that doesn't suit their sound, and it completely buries three-fourths of the band in most of the songs. What sounds the death knell of this record is Otaegui's inability to take control of his own music; he fights to rise above the mediocre soundscape playing around him, and as a result, the music sounds as though it was recorded in an empty concert hall and that effect strips every bit of emotion from this record. If our reviews don't hold any water, why do so many people look forward to them and beg us to review their material? Just because one forgettable, bad album doesn't earn a favorable review on its own merits doesn't mean the site as a whole is to blame -- it's the band, who decided to destroy a promising sound by going all trendy and making something bland, dull and not even the least bit catchy.

Perhaps someone is so sexually frustrated, that they have to take it out on a band that is clearly making a 'movement,' something you may be unable to even do in a bedroom. Besides the blatant and clearly visible attacks on TAV's new album, you obviously didn't think clearly when you stopped listening after 30 seconds in to the album. If the band took the safe road as you stated, they would have kept drawing listeners and the songs people wanted to hear. Instead, they actually made new songs... new songs, who would have thought. Maybe you should give the album another listen before you attack the album on personal feelings towards the band.

Attacking a band? Saying it's a step down, not ambitious, and that their lead singer can't command attention through the music on CD is not an attack. It's a review.

I stopped listening 30 seconds into the album? Why then did I make it through the album a good 15 times for my review, approximately twice what I give most albums?

Personal feelings? I have no problem with the band. Go through and see who spent most of the past year or so posting about them. Joe, Scott Irvine, and I. When I like a band and release a crappy record, why wouldn't I tell them? If you want to start arguing bias, think about it this way. Would you rather have a supporter of the band or someone who hates a band member because he called him out months ago writing the review. There's a reason that other staffers are backing me here...it's not because they have a grudge. The music is extremely subpar. I'm not going to sugarcoat it.

I've yet to listen to this album, though I will probably do so today, if only to hear how bad it is.

Regardless of how accurate the review is, some of the comments from staff members are really indefensible. I personally have no problems with the review per se, but I also have no problems with readers expressing their disagreement, which Tony and other staff seem to have a problem with. While it's certainly okay to respond to comments and back up, defend and clarify your opinions, accusing people who disagree with the review of blowing the band is a little ridiculous, immature and unprofessional.

It's hard to take all this seriously when the staff members are making a mockery of it. Debate and discourse about music is one thing, but unnecessary personal attacks at people you don't even know based on their opinions is really unacceptable.

look i wasnt trying to bash you, or write my own review. i was just saying i thoroughly enjoy this album. i hear the ampitheatre effect, and yeah its kind of annoying, but i can get past it. i just personally find that the cd is just a solid, but not groundbreaking pop album. and if anybody has a problem with my own opinion like the posts above and blow your response tony. than maybe they should gtfo out understand each person is entitled to their own opinion. i just really really disagree, and usually i agree with what you write.

I don't claim to know them. I know who some are and they know who I am, but I'd rather not affiliate myself with any of them. There are a few, though, like Roo from Morning for the Masses that are cool dudes that I associate with because they are not in pop-punk bands with whom every 12-14 year old female masturbates to on a nightly basis, and is a fan of them for looks not for their musical ability
