AP.net: To begin, describe your band in your own words.
Jordan: Hardworking
AP.net: Why should I (the jaded music-listening veteran) listen to your band over, oh, the fifty million other power-pop/emo/screamo/heartcore bands that have recently popped up?
Steve: We’re the real deal. We’ve been around for 7 years before pop/emo/creamo/shlemo/crappo got popular for me my biggest influences are Lifetime and Jawbreaker b/c those bands are real to me.
Jordan: We’ve been around for a long time. I just like to sing.
AP.net: NFG has been a band for a long time now. Do you feel you’re getting all the credit you deserve, or less, or more? Why?
Steve: We don’t know if we get what we deserve. No one deserves anything unless they work for it. We just go with the flow.
AP.net: Has Drive-Thru’s relationship with Geffen affected you guys at all? What are your feelings about all that. I know Stefanie and Richard have has one or two negative things to say about it.
Chad: Not at all. Richard and Stephanie are friends. We care about their opinions. They have no relationship with Geffen when it comes to our band.
AP.net: Everyone is talking about how different these songs are from the previous records, with the different recording techniques and what not, but really, on the level now, how different is this record? I mean lately all you hear about is how different Brand New is lately and how different Straylight Run is than TBS. Is this going to be that drastic of a departure for NFG?
Ian: Considering we’ve grown up so much it’s really different. We have better instruments, better tools. We got bored of the music that is out now. We decided to make it a little more interesting. This record is more rift-based with more catchy lyrics like our old stuff.
AP.net: In light of that, do you think that New Found Glory as a band has longevity? I mean, the pop-punk thing probably won’t be around forever, do you think that you’re going to be able to mature as artists and expand beyond the boundaries that pop-punk presents to bands?
Chad: No, we’ve been around for seven years we definitely don’t have longevity.
Ian: We’re not really thinking to the future. We take it day by day. When the band is over, we’ll look back and be happy about what we’ve accomplished.
AP.net: Even with all the press about how different the album is, there are still naysayers who claim it’s the same boring, contrived record. How do you respond to critics who’re calling the new album “Sticks and Stones: Part II”? How do you, as artists, deal with criticism, both constructive and derogatory? What about the pure haters, the ones that hate you just to hate you? What would you say to them if you could?
Ian: It’s the United States of America where people have the freedom of choice and freedom of expression. Instead of listening to critics, decide for yourself and make up your mind. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they stink.
AP.net: Will there be a headlining tour in the fall? What size venues will be played?
Ian: We haven’t talked about what bands are going to be on that tour. When the time comes to book that tour we’ll see what bands are in the line up and decide what size the venue and from there. Right now we’re looking forward to being on the Warp Tour this summer.
AP.net: The majority of your fan base consists of teenage females, would you agree? Why do you think this is? Do you ever wish that weren’t the case?
Ian: We treat everyone equally. We don’t treat people differently based on sex, race age. We appreciate everyone who comes to our shows whether they are 8 or 60.
Chad: We just played a show in DC. I would say it was 60/40 girls to guys. Surprisingly.
Ian: I just know when I was a young kid I wanted the right to listen to any band I wanted to listen to and not have people tell me I didn’t have the right to listen to it.
Follow-up: Who’s the biggest ladies man in the band? Besides Ian, of course. (AP.net is the rumor mill—had to throw this one in).
Ian: None of us are single. Girls that are our age hate us.
Chad: I’m a ladies man. I like ladies. I like my girlfriend the most. I like Fergie from Black Eyed Peas.
AP.net: I like to ask this question to everyone… Where do you see the “scene” going in five years? The whole underground, pop-punk, emo, screamo scene. Do you think it will blow up, i.e. the whole Nirvana/Grunge thing in the early nineties or die out or what?
Chad: Its already blowing up like that. I don’t think it’ll go much bigger.
Jordan: Instead of five bands that are on MTV, there are 20 that are popular right now. There will probably be fewer in a couple of years.
AP.net: NFG recently appeared on the Rock Against Bush compilation. Want to tell us more about your political stance, as a band or individually. Are there any opposing viewpoints in the band? Did anyone catch the president’s speech the other night? What’d you think? What about gay marriage, any opinions that? Sorry, this is actually like six questions in one.
Ian: We’re not really a political band at all. We don’t sing about political issues. We wanted to be on it because a) since we were younger we wanted to be on a Fat record comp. And b) it’s not that we’re against Bush, we want kids to be aware when they are 18 to take the opportunity to vote whether they vote for Bush or Kerry or whoever. Learn all you can and make your own decision.
AP.net: Parting comments?
Ian: Our new CD Catalyst comes out May 18th. Everyone should buy two copies.
Chad: We’ll go down in history.
Ian: We want a platinum record so give it to a friend!
AP.net: Thanks a ton for doing this for us, guys, we really appreciate it and I’m sure the fans will, too. Look forward to hearing the new album, too. Thanks again.
Steve: Thanks! We’re on Absolutepunk all the time.

It was my interview, but I asked Jason to post it because the answers that they gave were so shitty that I didn't want to put my name to it. I guess that's unavoidable now, but whatever. The answers they gave were bullshit, the interview is bullshit, I wouldn't have posted if Jason hadn't insisted.
The main cause was probably that the interview was done by e-mail instead of live, so maybe they didn't feel like typing a lot out? Or maybe they dictated to someone who just shortened it? Who knows. Granted, the questions I asked were probably a lot more aggressive than they're used to, but I'm not some idiot fanboy who just wants to ask the same questions as everyone else. But I guess they didn't take kindly to that, so whatever. I don't care.

Just like you, I thought the interview was kinda crappy. But at the same time, it left me with a very uneasy feeling. Sure I grew up listening to NFG like everybody else (although not as much lately).. They are definitely one of those bands that just sticks around, where you don't really care what the song sounds like.. you can just think "This is a New Found Glory" song, and it almost makes you feel good inside. You know that they stick to their sound, and are truly infectious. Jordan's words even inspire me, and that's more than I can say about so many singers... but back to my point.. They seem like they don't care. Maybe they just gave up on the fans and realized it. I mean sure, some of the questions were weak, but still.. it sounded like they were reading from cuecards. Whatever, it's not that big of a deal. I just feel cheapend.

Wow, do a whole interview where you basically tell a band they're over, then you're suprised that they aren't enthusiastic. It's cool, at least you got to mentin Brand New in there.
I thought the band used the perfect amount of sarcasm to make their point. They didn't need to say more. I can't wait to hear the new album.
I predict ap.net starts dissing this band now in 5...4........3.....

What the fuck were they doing that they couldn’t answer 15 intelligent questions that their fans want to know. The interview was defiantly bullshit and NFG should be ashamed that it’s even posted (if they actually check this site.) It just seems like their the kind of band that was in it to get big and now since their semi big they are too cool for school when more then half of their fans are fucking girls. Just reading this interview made me hate this band that much more. I grew up listening to them and I love their records before self titled but it just seems like their FINK 182 (fake blink) they "changed their style" of music for this record? I wonder who did that this year also...

Maybe they didnt answer the questions because your a pompous ass hole who works for an elitist websites run by a bunch of biased wannabes who couldn't hack it as a musician so they decide to make a website with a middle school Mentality. Maybe they could sense you trying to get off on tearing down a big name band like NFG cuz they're not like horrible dime a dozen screaming bands whose asses you guys kiss on a regular basis. And just maybe they didnt feel like putting up with your shit

That interview was bullshit. All you did was attack the band and then you've got the nerve to say that they didnt answer you're questions? I mean, seriously what is wrong with you? You represent a website and asked them for an interview. They kindly oblige and then you throw any insult you can possibly think of. And you wonder why certain bands have a problem with this website. Im done coming here. Elitism is old.

totally i agree the interview had some really shitty questions. like almost rude questions. how the hell can you ask NFG about longevity when they have already accomplished everything a band in this genre can. if they quit today, they are loaded enough for the rest of their lives. EVERYONE knows them, whether they're into this music, or they like dave mathews band. i can totally understand how they got annoyed at the interviewer....if anything it makes him look dumb.
point is.....they're NEW FOUND GLORY, they are the reason half the bands today are playing.

And I'm sorry that you are a condescending ass. NFG is a band who has influenced many of the bands that are written about on this website everyday. So, technically, without them, there wouldn't be as many bands to go around promoting. Perhaps we should treat others how we would want to be treated. Everyone learns that in kindergarten. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone asked you questions that you asked NFG and expected you to take the time to come up with good answers.

Meh -- just a boring interview. Not the interviewer's fault or really the bands since they are asked basically the same questions by everyone. However, I thought they should have had a better answer for the last question. After all the comp is called "Rock Against Bush". It's a call to vote -- against Bush. Quite a political statement for a band that is "not political". Just looks like a move to just get another song out there to me. Fairly irresponsible (especially with their justification).

I'm embarrased for the masses of you who keep plugging NFG as a legendary influential band that turned so many people into music.
I think Jami asked very important questions given the current state of this genre, and the future of music.

1.) Treating others how we "want to be treated" is a great fundamental ethics lesson to teach little children on the playground. However, that doesn't necessarily transition over to all aspects of life. Journalism and reporting is all about taking the role of the devil's advocate and trying to solicit an interesting response. What do you think journalism is? It certainly isn't about giving everyone flowers and kittens and telling them you love them. Life doesn't reflect kindergarten.
2.) If I were in a band I would invite interviews such as this which asked difficult questions and gave me ample opportunity to cover some important subject matter. If nothing else, this was a great opportunity for this band to prove their substance and integrity and prove that they are aware of current issues in their scene and get insight as to how they intend to continue or evolve. Giving half assed answers simply because questions aren't flattering simply shows the lack of depth the band has.

Dude, if you are looking for scene points you're working at the wrong website. Why even conduct an interview with a band if you don't give a shit about them? Calm down and go shopping at Urban Outfitters or Goodwill. Blah, blah, blah, NFG sucks, Blink sucks, you kids are trendy, ect. You don't impress me, and you probably don't impress 95% of the people who come on this website and don't buy into the whole bullshit elitist mentality people like yourself hold in such high regard. You only look cool to other losers like yourself. Us normal people...you know, the people that actually listen to music because we like it, not because we feel that our emo friends will ostracize us if we don't like it...we all think you and people like you are a fucking joke. Grow the fuck up and learn to show some fucking respect. If this is such a tough job for you go be a singer/songwriter because I'm sure that's your ultimate goal anyway and god knows we don't have enough emo/i wear my heart on my sleeve/i want to slit my throat music out now. If you would open your eyes you may see that bands like NFG or Blink are actually the only bands out right now doing something different and that don't write songs with the same cliche couplets and underlying narratives about wanting to kill you because you ripped my heart out and yadda, yadda, yadda. So there you go, the big secret is out: You and your indie friends are way more lame than any teenybopper ever could be because at least teenyboppers actually enjoy music instead of wasting so much time on criticizing others that do. Hopefully one day you will learn that your favorite bands aren't putting out cds and playing shows for only you. IN YO FACE!

Actually, season 8 of the X-Files was one of my favorites even though he was only in half of the episodes. It must have given the writers a burst of creativity. But yeah, the last season that didn't include him was horrible.

Well ya know. lol. If you are referencing simply this 'scene' i will agree totally that Blink are doing something definitely new and different. (thank god). It's about time someone does. Not everyone can be TBS.
So I can agree with that if that's the context you are referring to.
If however, we are talking about all music, I don't think that this scene is really doing...anything new and different or groundbreaking when compared to acts in other styles out there.
I assume you were referring to the 'scene' though, so no worries - i agree with the Blink part of the comment.

that was an absolutely horrible interview. the questions, if not flat out attacking, were degrading and negative. by asking about where do you think you'll be after this trend dies out is basically saying "you guys are a trendy band and you are probably going to die out when you can't progress." Steve was right on when he said "We’re the real deal. We’ve been around for 7 years before pop/emo/creamo/shlemo/crappo got popular." NFG has influenced most of the bands on this site probably and deserve much respect. they are a hardworking band and know how they got to where they are. and they did not dodge the political question. of course the indidviduals in the band are going to have an opinion, but they don't have to share their views with the world if they don't want to. ian even said they wanted kids to go vote and get the message out...how is that avoiding anything? i guess if a band doesn't say "we're against bush, we hate him" they're weak and are sidestepping on their answer. NFG is a great great band and that interview totally disrespected and underminded all the band has worked their asses off for and changed their entire lives for.
