Discuss one of the best bands of the 90's in here. Playful sonically but downright harrowing lyrically, this duality on 1998's Electro-Shock Blues makes the album E's magnum opus in addition to one of the most engaging and rewarding releases the "indie" genre has ever seen. Everett's ability to blend childlike innocence with incredible despair is stunning.

That would easily be my favorite.
All of the work that they've done has been extremely underrated in my opinion. I think that E is one of those song-writers that no matter what he writes, it's going to be good. Does anybody know if there are plans for a new album anytime soon? I know they put those two compilations out earlier this year, but those don't really count. I figured with all of the material E has written, a new album would have been out by now since Blink Lights came out.

pretty decent stuff, but daisies of the galaxy & blinking lights & other revelations never get enough love, good albums that often get overlooked
fans of these guys should check augie march (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=257158), probably be a big fan overlap

Daisies is very good as well. Blinking Lights, Shootenanny, and Souljacker are slight letdowns.

i enjoy blinking lights & other revelations, but i can see what you mean, the woes the double disk albums. it could of been a lot better. agreed on the other two however, very hit or miss

The double disc is always a daunting task and really the only one I enjoy from front to back would have to be Songs In The Key Of Life.

Absolutely love Electro Shock Blues.. (sweet. I didn't mess up on the album name this time.)
I think you recc'd them to me originally in a mixtape thread, so thanks a lot IWas haha. I do need to listen to more.. at this point, I only really listen to the aforementioned album and then Novocaine for the Soul.
Anyone who hasn't heard them, shoudl hear Novocaine for the Soul or Last Stop this Town in my opinion... though Last Stop always somewhat depresses me.

That entire album is a big downer haha so good though. You should give Daisies Of The Galaxy a listen next. It's a "happier" side of Eels if that exists.
So I downloaded Electro-Shock Blues a couple days ago, and what a fantastic album it is. Sounds so cheery and playful yet dark and dreary at the same time.

i don't really remember. i probably just forgot about them. i remember them having a really really good live album.
actually what i think happened was, i had a couple of their albums, and let my friend who moved away across the country borrow them and forgot to get them back. then my old laptop with all my music got stolen so that's probably how i forgot about them. i should get back into them though.

Yep, love the contrast between the music and lyrics. Any songs stand out to you?

Electro-Shock Blues is one of my fave albums of all time. So good. I love the whole Eels discography though. E is so unbelievably talented. His book is really great too.

I'm hoping they continue in the right direction. Blinking Lights was a nice step forward after two steps back with Souljacker and Shootenanny.

Yeah, but there are bright spots on both Soujacker and Shootenanny. I wouldn't say they have released a "bad" record yet.

I agree I love Blinking lights, I was very disappointed when I saw him live and he hardly played anything from it. Actually seeing him play live almost made me stop listening to him entirely, I thought it was pretty awful. I am very excited and curious for his new release.

Wouldn't say downright bad, merely disappointing.

Love new albums to check out
Downloading now. Thanks fellas.
I love how when you google "eels" you get the band's site first, their wikipedia page second, and then the actual animal after that :-d Can't wait to hear the new one :-)
i cant believe that people are saying that Eels are bad live. I was only a really casual fan and went to his last show in Sydney for free and was blown away. Have become a massive fan since, bought all the albums, his book, watched his doco and everything. Really keen for the new album

After reading "Things The Grandchildren Should Know" last year I'm now watching a BBC programme called Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives which has E going on a quest to find out more about his scientist father, who came up with the theory of parallel universes. He talks about his father and his relationship, or lack thereof, with him in the book so it's really interesting seeing him speak about it and finding out about the Father he never really knew.

I´m listening to the classic Electro-Shock Blues right now, and I´m loving it. I´ll never get sick of it. 'Hospital Food' is a really fun jam.
