View Full Version : What are some of your favorite cover songs?

Anthony Lutz
07/09/08, 08:25 PM
Covers usually have one of two ways of going: they can either be amazing, and do the original justice, or they can be god-awful, and can not be justified as to why the band even thought of butchering a classic. What are some of your guys' favorite cover songs, or even some of your least favorites? Seeing as a lot of bands in the scene seem to cover at least one or two songs in their career, there has to be an attitude that the fans have about them. Thoughts?

I'll start since I started this thread :-)

I think I speak for many in this thread when I say that Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" is one of the best cover songs ever. It also may be one of the only that actually surpasses the original. Everything about it is so amazing, and he definitely makes the song his own.

A cover that I really down-right loathe is Thursday's cover of "Nybatteri". Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Thursday, but in all honesty, why did they need to cover Sigur Rós? I think that their intentions were good, but the overall performance did not do justice to the song one bit. Not only that, but ever since I heard it, it made me look at Thursday in a whole new way. This is one of those songs that I "pretend" they didn't do, and look past it when listening to the rest of their discography.

In my opinion, cover songs are meant to be fun and light-hearted. I'll take anything that puts its own unique spin on a classic, and doesn't weigh it down with heavy-handed nonsense.

I'm less a fan of compilations of covers, like the "Punk Does..." series, and more a fan of live covers - I saw the Hush Sound on Wednesday and they played a really great cover of "Back in the U.S.S.R." that brought so much energy to the set.

Counting Crows play some awesome covers live - I have an mp3 of them doing "Rain King" with almost all of "Thunder Road" in the middle.
