Who else loves this show besides me ? By far one of the best TV shows ever. I got the Blu-Ray season DVD last week and I've been going through the season before the show comes back on.

I downloaded the first episode yesterday for my iPod. I thought it was pretty good, I'm gonna TiVo the marathon when it comes on next week. I would buy the DVDs now, but I want to make sure I really like it before I do.

I just rescently discovered this show. I realized Connor (from angel...dont know the guys name) was in it so I was interested.

I've only been able to see the first few episodes. Its not bad, but to be honest its almost hard to watch. I mean with all the smoking and cheating and women bashing...haha its pretty crazy how it was.

oh yeah, I also just noticed the red head secretary is the same read head that was in a couple episodes of firefly, which is kinda funny cause her role was similar.

That's a good idea. I've watched it since it came on. You'll start to really appreciate the show the more you see it.

Yeah he's really good on the show. I prefer him on Mad Men more than Angel actually.

It's definitely has that quality to the show but as the show progresses, you really do see the characters beyond their sexism and their views. The show does a great job at showing how incredibly imperfect they are, but it's does let you know there are human.

This show is pretty good, I just watched the whole thing. It is different from all the other tv shows around now and it has an interesting take on the 60's. Hopefully the 2nd season gets better.

I don't know if it will be explained. Maybe it will, I feel that it was the sense of being trapped and triggered a sort of fight or flight response.

That was one of the finest season premieres I've ever seen. I downloaded the show for the first season, but were all the commercials like the BMW one? It was so seamless, a commercial about the advertising strategy. If all commercials were like that, I think I might even look forward to them!

The red head is sooooooooooo hot.

i've met her once before - just as attractive in person, and legitmately down to earth as far as i could tell.

as a PR/ad exec myself, i've been hooked on this damn show since day one. 2 of my current bosses were in the height of thier careers when this series was set - aparently, it really was just like that (and worse!). it's fascinating to me to compare and contrast the show to thier stories...

WarpSpeedChewy

Not as great as I thought it would be but it just the show just picks up everything like it's already in the middle of a season. I just need more info is all, but other than that it was great. Excited to see the season progress. Plus I'm happy to see Roger Sterling back in working order. He might be my favorite character on the show. John Stattery is too good of an actor.

Glad to see more people know about this show and this thread pick up some momentum.

2 of my co-workers are executive producers of a small independant film that she has a role in. they needed young people as extras for a scene in a bar, so i recruited a bunch of my college friends to come with me.

while standing around set, i think i spoke maybe four sentences to her, all of which were unintelligible stammerings, but she was kind, responded, and seemed used to it. Julie McNiven i think is her name, too lazy to imdb it, lol.

Someone please give me the general synopsis.

The general synopsis would simply be the lives of ad men and their families in 1960s New York. If you really liked the show, definitely buy the DVDs from last season. You won't be disappointed.

I thought last nights episode was great. I really can't wait for next week.

The general synopsis would simply be the lives of ad men and their families in 1960s New York.

to elaborate on this, the reason why this is interesting is because back then, ad agencies were like a different world...drugs, booze, constant smoking in the office, infidelities (women were not in positions of power), ridiculous fights and obscene amounts of pressure...

This season has been so much better than last year. Last night's episode proved it. I felt so bad for Joan last night. She thinks she has Mr. Right and then something like that happens. I wonder where Don's headed with meeting up with the REAL Mrs. Draper.

Really glad to see this thread back. Great episode to start of the 3rd season. That beginning though was amazing to watch. Really kind of surprised how they dove into Salvador being gay. I like how they just start each season like it already started and it works well with some of the new cast. The new president of Sterling/Cooper seems cool. Campbell kinda of owned the episode though.

Stephen Chamberlain
08/17/09, 06:20 PM
Episode last night was pretty good, I'd give it a B. I guess I was expecting a little more. I wasn't, however, anticipating Sal's homosexuality being discovered by a coworker so early, but I loved the way Don alluded to it on the plane home. That was very well done. Also I knew Pete's promotion was too good to be true when it happened.

What happened in the finale? I thought Betty was still mad with Don and he wasn't living at home? I can't remember, it's been so long.

I want some action between Pete and Peggy again. They didn't address that in the first ep.

Symbolism pure and simple. Didn't you notice how the camera lingered on the woman leading the maypole thing prior to the grass stroking? She symbolized untamed nature and, by extension, unfulfilled desire. Him touching the grass was as close as he could get to "having" her.
I feel like I should start watching this show, I'll put season one in my netflix.
You definitely should. Only show on television I watch. Just don't expect something exciting. Its strength is its subtlety and languorous pace.

Yeah, this doesn't really bother me that it's not "exciting". The wait on Netflix though is "Long Wait", do you happen to know if theres a place online I could watch? Or, does AMC rerun first season episodes?

Yeah, your taste seems sophisticated enough that the excitement factor wouldn't be an issue.

Uh, AMC will probably be replaying this season's episodes. I'm sure if you type "watch Mad Men online" in Google, you'll be directed to something.

This week's was great. Roger in the blackface had me rolling on the floor. I also loved when Peggy deadpanned "I am so high."

On the dramatic side, I enjoyed Don's reminiscences while fixing the mint juleps and of course the confrontation between Don and Roger, however muted it was.

Judging by the preview for next week's episode, looks like poor Sal's gonna have to come out of the closet.

Oh and damn Vincent Kartheiser and Alison Brie can really move.

Peggy completely owned this episode. "I'm Peggy Olsen and I want to smoke Marijuana". That last part was hilarious though.

I love that moment. Roger is my favorite character on the show (blackface excluded) and it was fascinating to see Don sort of be honest with him in that way. I'm curious to see how he handles it.

That was hilarious. Really really goofy to watch.

Probably the least exciting episode of the season so far, but essential for the story arc.

I loved Roger eating the sundae and his comment about all the handjobs be was gonna have to give.

Man, Don's little girl's (forgot her name lol) teacher sure was hurtin' for a bonin' from Don. I'm sure it'll happen though.

Shit will be going down next week.

So fucking glad to see Duck Phillips back. Also glad to see he still has those Ducks on his wall.

Kinda of strange to see Pete come down on the side he did in terms of that advertisement in Ebony. Pete's still Pete of course. One other thing I found interesting is when he said "You're decisions affect me" to peggy. That definitely caught my ear.

Betty is secretly as fucked up as her daughter is. I'm starting to wonder though if eventually if Sally is going to be more upfront with it.

“Are you aware of the number of handjobs I’m going to have to give?” Classic. We need a good Roger episode already.

Something I'm starting to notice about all of the preview of the next episode make them seem more eventful than they actually are. You would gather from the preview that we would finally know what the smoke monster is but Mad Men isn't that type of show. Each episode is an exercise in subtly, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Yes the structuring was amazing. I loved how disorienting the analepsis was. So many good lines and moments too...

-"Your hands are soft, like a woman's. You grow bullshit."

-Bert playing the Dick Whitman card. "After all, who's signing the contract?"

-The fainting couch.

-The marriage metaphor Connie used to discuss the contract.

-Duck banging Peggy!

etc.

poppa Q
09/28/09, 01:51 PM
Another knock-out episode, two weeks in a row. My thoughts:

-I agree with Luke and Stephen (and I'm sure everyone else), the structuring will brilliant. Did a lot for the episode.
-I thought Don chewing out Peggy was fantastic. "You're good. Get better, (I forget what finished it off)..."
-Two different men sitting in Don's chair when he arrives at the office set the tone for the episode's later moments.
-Cooper owning Don was one of the show's best scenes (for its length) in its three seasons. Robert Morse absolutely nailed it.
-The hitchhiking scene was a bit too obvious, but worked for two reasons: 1) seeing ole Archie Whitman, and 2) the predictability was kind of nullified because of the opening scene.
-I felt dirty seeing Duck and Peggy together.

i think the thing with Mad Men is that every episode is in someway pivotal to plot progression but not much ever happens. it's very uneventful compared to outrageous events other shows, but it has an exciting subtlety which is what keeps people interested.

Holy crap tonight was great. I think this along with "Man Walks Into An Advertising Agency" (The lawnmower episode) was the best of the season so far.

-Sal really got so much shit. I can't believe he got fired. Joan now him to. Kinda of surprised to see this show doing that.
-Don is slowly becoming more of a dick.
-That scene where Connie tells him he wants the moon was maybe the best scene of the episode.
-This episode completely belong to Betty. For some reason, I've always thought January Jones was an good ok actress, but she won me over with this one.

My one gripe with this season is that there hasn't been enough "office" action; all of the workers sitting around the table during pitches, etc. Also, Sal has been absent for the last few.
I wouldn't necessary agree with that but I see where you are coming from. The action he been more character based this season. But there was the reorganization of Sterling Cooper, Peggy wanting a higher pay along with Duck Phillps' offer for both Peggy and Peter. OH yeah, a guy's foot got cut off by a lawnmower too.

All I want this season is a Roger Sterling episode. He's kinda had some of the focus taken away from him.

They usually skip around a bit between seasons...sure, it started in 1960 and S3 was 1963, but the show has typically skipped around a bit between seasons. Since this season just ended heading into '64, I wouldn't be surprised to see the show pick up pretty well down the road.

Loved the finale. It will really give the show a fresh start when it returns next year. I'm glad they dropped alot of the well known office characters instead of trying to force them all into a smaller business setting.

Here's to hoping that Sal somehow finds his way back next year.

I bet they'll pull something similar to Joan, and bring him back when it becomes clear his talent is unmatchable. Although on the other hand they portrayed Don as being pretty disgusted with the whole gay thing, so maybe not.

Just bought the S1 DVD at Borders just because it was 30 bucks And the show gets so much acclaim

My favorite show is LOST, and my other favorites are Firefly, Buffy, Angel, HIMYM, Arrested Development, Dollhouse, etc.
In other words, shows that are, from what I hear, nothing like this show.

Will I enjoy this show?

Also, that shirt rules.

Got to own them all, I just feel off only owning one season of a show and not the others, that's why I usually buy whole sets/all the seasons.

I didn't really expect it to when I bought the S1 DVD, but it really does. You just burn through episodes.

I didn't think so at first, either. I didn't really watch the Season 1 DVD until season 2 started, but after I watched it a lot. Plus it's good to have in case you're ever in the mood to watch it. Then you're just glued to the whole series.

I've burned alot of money on dramas. I paid more than I'm willing to admit for the complete OZ series and I've watched it once in 5 years.

Now I stick to mostly sitcoms and cartoons, stuff you can put in watch a random episode and be done.

I agree with you there. The only drama I've bought that I watch somewhat consistently is Nip/Tuck. Otherwise, it's usually Sunny or That '70s Show that I'm watching. If you know you're not really gonna watch Mad Men on DVD, don't worry about purchasing. You could just TiVo it.

I'm such a loser I bought the last three seasons of that. Besides Undergrads, I don't think I watch any show more often than That 70's Show.

before we get too far off topic, another good series to watch repeatedly is Married With Children. I grew up on the early season, but missed most of the later half. I've since come to really love the show on DVD. I like that its basically two shows in one, with the first few seasons being more realistic-funny, sort of a working class comedy, and the second half more slapstick-ish.

if you've never seen Undergrads, it too is a must own. I can repeat the show line for line, and still love watching. It sucks that MTV was too cheap to pick up a second season...

Just got done rewatching Season 3, by far my favorite season. Everything was just so good. Anyways, I need Season 4 like right now, so many questions and potential storylines, should be great.

also, Mercedes Benz just got a whole lot sexier:
"Beginning on Sunday, [Hamm] gets to do some advertising work in the real world as the new commercial voice of Mercedes-Benz USA. Mr. Hamm’s voice will be heard in a commercial that Mercedes-Benz USA will run on local ABC stations in the carmaker’s 16 largest markets during the ABC network’s broadcast of the Academy Awards"

It took me awhile to get into this show. The first few episodes were pretty boring to me but then it picked up and it's great. We just finished the series a week or so ago and I can't wait until season 4.

I hate Don Draper. It makes it hard for me to like Jon Hamm when I see him in/on other things. I didn't realize it was him on 30 rock (we hadn't watched Mad Men yet) but the last time he was on briefly he restored my faith and I don't hate him as much anymore...but then again... once Don does another assholish thing it may be hard for me to like him again. haha.

you're the first person I've ever read to dislike Don Draper. I think he is awesome. Not the infidelity part of his life, but that just shows how conflicted he is, that such a confident and powerful man is so needy.

I think its just the whole cheating thing. I hate hate hate that... and then how he treats his wife even though he's the one not respecting her! I also don't like how he acts at work. He's cocky and thinks he's better than everyone. Just everything he does bothers me. Roger cheated and of course that bothered me but he gives off a different feeling when at work than Don does. And for the series up until now he was a higher up! I still love the show. Probably a love to hate Don type thing as well, you know? haha.
