I finally finished the book and it was quite amazing. I nearly wept a few times, but the movie is scheduled to come out in December. They have released a couple photos of it online. Just wondering if anyone else is excited for it to come out and/or want to discuss it before it does.
I never really pictured Eric Bana as Henry but I am think he is a great actor and Rachel McAdams is my favorite. Hopefully it translates well.

I actually cried a couple times. It might be one of my favorite books. I honestly can't wait until it comes out. This has the potential to be a great romantic film.

It's become one of my favorites as well.
I was almost disappointed in the ending and then it made a sense to me because it begins and ends with Claire waiting for Henry to return to her. Really beautiful stuff.

To be honest, I'm not excited about the movie. I just love the book so much, I don't think it would do it justice.

Ok, so I read about half of the book just today, and hope to finish the rest in the next couple days. Love, love, love it, and I especially love how Chicago is almost a character unto itself. And I was thinking, after the TIFF schedule was announced and this wasn't on it, where would be a better place to premiere the film than the CIFF? I'm crossing my fingers.

Great book. Definitely a favorite of mine. My only worry for the movie is that it is from the director of Flightplan. I hated that movie with an almost violent passion.

So I just finished the book today, and wow, what an ending. I have never cried from a book before, but the part where Henry is at the New Year's party and basically saying his goodbyes to everyone, up to the part where he finally goes back to '84 had me almost bawling. I don't know how i'm gonna deal with that in the theater.

I think this material is better than that of Flightplan too. I can mostly agree with that. If anything Flightplan was a good looking movie. I just abhored the story and the acting, so I guess I can't fault the director for that too much. It would be nice to see what he can do with infinitely better material.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how much of an emotional attachment to this book. It was given to me as a gift by someone who used to be really close to me. It is probably the only book to be released in recent memory that I have that deep of an attachment to. Which is probably why my expectations are so high for this.

I go to the University of Toronto. Parts of it were filmed at our downtown Toronto campus. I know one of the sets used was our rare book library, which is designed in an almost cylindrical shape with each floor surrounded by Plexiglas, metal bars, and alarm systems. On it's own it is a majestic building and I know it will be a perfect place to double as Henry's work. Especially when he gets trapped inside.

Are you sure? IMDB says they did actually shoot at the Newberry... I asked someone who works for the library the other day and apparently it is half and half. The ground level of the library is the Rare Book Library and was used for wide shots, but the actual stacks are in the Newbury because there wasn't enough room in our library to manover around. The scenes involving the cage were also shot in Toronto

Well, I thought it was slightly annoying because it was hard at times trying to decipher who was actually talking. Although, I read somewhere that he made a point to do that to put you into the characters' mind, ie being blind and not being able to tell who was talking. I don't know how true that is.
I'm considering picking up another one of his books, but I have literally 22 books I have in line to read first.

Early review. Sounds mixed/positive? Not sure. I'd say it's mostly positive. Has me a little bummed but I'm excited for it's release.
Time travel has long been a baffling fringe thought of science
fiction. Time is an ever flowing continuum, seemingly impossible to
stop. The subject has been explored in countless forms of media,
visual, written and I’m sure aural (there are always books on tape).
Ray Bradbury’s novel, “A Sound of Thunder” is the examination I’m most
familiar with, if only because of “The Simpsons.” This takes the idea
that if one were to travel back in time and alter just one miniature
detail, it could have disastrous effect on the future. It was turned
into an unwatchable film with Ben Kingsley and Ed Burns a few years
ago. The misplacement of something in the past affecting the future
has no place in The Time Traveler’s Wife. As its title would suggest,
this film takes the scientific thought to a romantic level.
A car crash when he was six years old was the first instance in which
Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana) had been exposed to his time travel
ability. He’s visited by his elder self, telling him the crash is
nothing to worry about. This is presumably to just calm the younger
Henry down, as his mom is killed in the crash, usually something one
would worry about. The time-traveled Henry then dissipates, fleeing
the scene, leaving the young one to deal with the tragedy at hand. A
few rules to this time travel story are established in the quick
scene. Henry travels back to times only in which he’s already been
born. His travel location is only to where his younger self is
present. When he travels, anything he’s wearing stays in the present
and he must immediately seek clothing to cover his nudity in the past.
Lastly, he has no control over when his current self travels and when
he ends up.
Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams) is the chronological constant in the
story and as her age progresses, so do the details of the story, for
the most part. Around college age, she stumbles upon Henry working in
a library. She recognizes him, but he fails to recognize her. She
tells him he told her he’d react that way when they met again. She
first encountered Henry’s time traveling ability when she was a young
girl, setting up a picnic for herself on her family’s vast property.
She immediately takes a liking to him and he vows to continue to visit
her. She of course tests his claim of being able to travel through
time by asking about the future. His dematerialization in front of her
helps make her a believer.
Once Henry and Clare meet up again in the present tense of the story,
they fall immediately in love and get married, even with Clare’s
knowledge of how difficult his inability to be constantly present may
pose problems for them in the future. She chooses to looks past this
caveat, but it rapidly becomes an issue when he travels on their
wedding night, even leaving his wedding ring behind. Like any couple,
they face trials and tribulations, with Henry’s involuntary extended
stays away from her only adding to the frustration. The question
becomes if the romance they’ve maintained through the course of
decades is enough to carry them into future happiness.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is based on a novel of the same name by
Audrey Niffenegger. I’ve never read, nor heard of it, so any
discussion of how the film adheres to the source material coming from
me, would be fruitless. The script, written by Bruce Joel Rubin
(Ghost), is itself a decent one. Given his past credits, it’s obvious
he was a great choice for a romantic film set between two people who
are only sometimes together. The romance that ensues between Henry and
Clare, although a bit forced by Henry’s traveling back in time,
meeting with Clare (did she really have a choice in the matter?), is a
love that resembles most relationships, but becomes a bit supernatural
in the elements it faces. There are times I felt the film defied its
own logic, with Henry always traveling to where another version of
himself seems to be, but yet appears in Clare’s bushes for some
reason. Perhaps it was time travel destiny for “star-cross’d lovers.”
There’s also a connection made between Clare’s father and Henry, which
proves important, that I have a feeling was a big part of the novel,
but here is treated as pure coincidence.
As the titular character, Rachel McAdams is essentially the main
protagonist, even if it’s not her whose genetic defect grants the
burden of traveling through time. The film seems a bit too focused on
Eric Bana, since he possesses the oddball character trait. It would
have been a slightly different movie if the focus was on McAdams’
character, and perhaps a more interesting one. Since this is a movie
and we’re to be dazzled by the visual, the time traveling aspect gets
a bit too much play. The film straddles the fence when it should have
leaned a bit more one way. McAdams is playing closer to her age, and I
think she’s become an engaging actress who can carry more weight in
the not-too-distant future. I like Bana, but fear he might not end up
the A-list talent Hollywood has tried to mold him into. The scales are
tipped toward McAdams here, in terms of acting prowess.
Director Robert Schwentke (Flightplan) does an admirable job keeping
the story cohesive and comprehendible, which is always a tricky
proposition when playing with time. He’s not much of a visual stylist,
but manages to keep the story moving without any true lulls within.
Although perhaps jarring at first, Henry’s fading away when on the
verge of leaving current time and space, is a neat effect that’s able
to create the sense of longing Clare feels, having to watch him slowly
drift from her presence.
P.S. I Love You and The Lake House are two movies that came to mind
when viewing this, and although I know they aren’t necessarily time
travel love stories, the longing of having a love you aren’t exactly
able to hold on to was resonant throughout this film. I haven’t
actually seen the former movies for myself (having no desire), so I’m
not quite sure what kind of quality bar has been set for the time
travel love affair genre. I felt good about The Time Traveler’s Wife
immediately finishing it, due to the romantic relationship, but there
are a few nagging script issues that came to light which I think draw
it down a notch or two. If only they could go back in time and fix it,
a better product might materialize.

And I feel a little better seeing McAdams gave a legit reason for the reshoots and pushbacks; Bana had to regrow his hair because of Star Trek.

I'm sure this has already been posted about, but don't feel like looking back:
http://www.amazon.com/Her-Fearful-Symmetry-Audrey-Niffenegger/dp/1439165394/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1242192271&sr=8-1
When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt, only knew that their mother, too, was a twin, and Elspeth her sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers -- with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another.
The girls move to Elspeth's flat, which borders Highgate Cemetery in London. They come to know the building's other residents. There is Martin, a brilliant and charming crossword puzzle setter suffering from crippling Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; Marjike, Martin's devoted but trapped wife; and Robert, Elspeth's elusive lover, a scholar of the cemetery. As the girls become embroiled in the fraying lives of their aunt's neighbors, they also discover that much is still alive in Highgate, including -- perhaps -- their aunt, who can't seem to leave her old apartment and life behind.

Maybe it's just the music choice, but the trailer looks so cheesey. I had hope that Schwentke would be able to capture the beauty of the book, but it just looks like another Rachel McAdams romance drama. I REALLY wish they would've chosen lesser-known actors & actresses. No matter how well they play their roles, I will not be able to see Eric Bana and Rachel as Henry and Claire.

There was no character development at all, there is no reason for you to care about these characters if you haven't read the book. Oh man, so many things were done terribly, it was frustrating. And I'm pretty sure none of my favorite scenes were in the movie. If you've read the book and are interested, here are some things left out: Henry beats up the football player, Claire's 18th birthday, little Henry's first time traveling experience, anything at all with Claire's childhood like the Ouija board, there is no Kimy, etc etc and my absolute favorite scene when Henry first meets Alba on her school trip was done terribly. Any moments in the meadow go by so quickly as well, I feel like there was never a really sweet moment or conversation. I really can't fully express how tremendously disappointed I am. I really love this book, the movie could have been huge.

I really don't get how even anyone that didn't read the book could like the movie. The characters had no life in them. There was no spark, it was all too fast, just big events, and none of the necessary in between.
As a person who absolutely loved the book I was disappointed with the way the storyline unfolded, but overall I enjoyed it. Rachel McAdams was great as usual and if you never actually read the book you'll most likely love it. Give it a try, I think it was worth it.

The movie was alright! It was good in the sense that I read the book and felt the emotions in the characters while watching movie but it didn't flow very well. I cried my eyes out watching it though! I didn't even realize Rachel McAdam's had a tattoo on her lower back after the butt shot when she got out of bed in Henry's apartment. I wonder what it is?!?!?! Haven't even bothered looking it up if it's on the internet. I guess we learn something new every day...

I thought the movie was alright....haven't read the book yet though. Several times throughout the movie though I found myself thinking that the book would be much better (not that there was really any question about that though).
This is why I prefer to watch the movie before reading the book when I have the choice. Reading the book first almost always results in not being all that impressed with the movie. I find that I can enjoy both if I watch the movie before reading.
