American Olympians told not to wave (http://washingtontimes.com/national/20040516-121028-9603r.htm) Stars & Stripes at Olympics. Kinda interesting...

I guess that's reasonable...it's about time we show that not all of us are pompous assholes.
But if anybody asks where you're from, don't be ashamed, say you're from America. If they look down upon you for that one fact, it's their own fault.

Maybe we should just throw the games too. Wouldn't want other countries to think that we are better than them by beating them, would we?
I don't think the world has progressed past a 5th grade mentality

That's bullshit. The whole point of the Olympics is to show national pride. When Americans wave their flags at the Olympics, it's not because we are "pompous assholes," it's because we are proud of our country doiminating the games. It's not our fault our country is the greatest.

The Olympic Games were actually part of a major religious festival honoring Zeus ...

The "I'm better than everyone" mentality is what gets us enemies. I'm not on the side of people that believe the entire world hates us, I actually think that's over-dramatized. But there does come a point where you don't want to go to a foreign country in the time of war and dance around your own flag, or pose like a bad ass with it or whatever. It doesn't mean we aren't proud and shouldn't wave the flag, I definitely think we should, but keep the egocentrism to a minimum.

The idea that we shouldnt be able to show our national spirit is stupid, this I agree with. Though it may sound bad, it is intended to protect the 500 athletes representing the US in the olympics. When politically uneducated haughty pricks, turn things around and try to make them sound like we are trying to denounce our heritage and country of origin, its very unsettling. Furthermore when these same obnoxious people try to turn it into another anti bush/bleeding liberal cause, something is wrong. People like this chap my ass, and most of them are uneducated in the topic and tend to just disagree with the status quo, for their own egotistical and maniacal pleasures. I dont post alot on this website, but I was fed up of getting fed this bullshit propaganda, and though I may agree with some peoples musical tastes, I most definitely do not agree with their political views.

What the fuck is flag waving going to do? I mean, surely the crowd knows its an American who won (if it happens to be so) because theyll fucking anounce it on the pa.

Id go so far as to say our country is the worst among "western" countries including all of Europe, but it's still amazing how one asshole (our president) can totally shit on the rest of the world and ruin the reputation of every one of it's citizens, even though MOST of us didn't vote for him.

As much as I'd like to agree with you on this topic, I think the reasoning that the USOC has put behind it leads me to think otherwise.
The very last thing we'd want in Athens is a repeat of what happened in Munich in 1972.
About 2 weeks ago, 3 bombs were set off near a police station in Athens. And there are almost 300 cells believed to exist in and around the city.
Basically, the USOC is trying to put personal safety before national pride.
