Beijing last night threatened Taiwan with destruction if President Chen Shui-bian doesn't accept China is "one nation."

In an official statement, the mainland government warned Taiwan leaders to make choices about the future carefully or the "Chinese people will crush their schemes firmly and thoroughly at any cost."

"At present, the relations across the Taiwan Strait are severely tested," the statement said. "To put a resolute check on the 'Taiwan independence' activities aimed at dismembering China ... is the most pressing task before the compatriots on both sides of the strait."

The statement was issued by the Taiwan Affairs Office under the Communist Party and the State Council. It came four days before Chen is inaugurated as president.

"Chen Shui-bian has left Taiwan society deeply torn with his vicious mischaracterization of the popular will of the Taiwan people, his unbridled instigation of hostility and animosity towards the mainland, and his frenzied provocation to the status quo that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to the one and same China," the harshly worded document said.

China offered Taiwan a carrot as well as a stick.

If Chen accepts the one-China policy, Beijing held out the hope of negotiations leading to an end to hostilities, establishment of a mechanism to resolve cross-strait disputes, direct commercial and transport links, closer economic co-operation and greater market access.

The statement added: "The Taiwan leaders have before them two roads: one is to pull back immediately from their dangerous lurch towards independence ... The other is to keep following their separatist agenda to cut Taiwan from the rest of China, and in the end, meet their own destruction by playing with fire."

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council and the Presidential Office had no immediate response to the statement.

The U.S. has sent its aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Kitty Hawk to cruise the East Asian region ahead of Thursday's inauguration ceremony.

The scary thing is, is that Taiwan is like the Israel of the far east and like with Israel, America is the only country that will come to Taiwan rescue when the communists try to expand...

if china takes millitary action and draws the US into it, i'll bet the farm that N. Korea takes the oppurtunity to strike at S. Korea. couple that with the war on terror and the war in Iraq and we could see that draft after all.

if i had to go to war and got drafted, i'd much rather fight north korea, they ARE a fucked regime that auctually pose a danger to us.
really though i doubt if that's how it'll go down.

im not too worried...although that was a harsh statement....i still think it could be "all talk". China is smart enough not to start a war right now over taiwan..they wouldnt be making any new friends.
or is there something thats happened lately that i missed that makes this statement something to be really concerned with?

what is the worldwide view on taiwan at the moment? i havnt met too many people that would actually say that taiwan should re intergrate into china.

If I remember correctly, a few months back, the US recognized Taiwan's sovereignty. I could be wrong though.

the US sort of plays a balancing act between the two countries, i think the deal is they won't recognize tawian as independent, in return for china agreeing to leave them alone. but the US has pledged to defend Taiwan against any chinese agression. I think the hope was china and taiwan would work this out on their own, with the US sort of watching over everything to make sure china doesn't bully taiwan into giveing up their "freedom".

I can't remember the site, it might have been military.com, but there was a guy who predicted all of this about 6 months ago. He said the new president of Taiwan was going to bank on the fact that it is an election year for Bush. He said the new president wouldn't fear any retaliation from China if he declared independence because president Bush wasn't about to let a massacre happen during an election year. But by the same token, China wasn't afraid to take over Taiwan because they thought Bush wouldn't send more troops to a fight during an election year. I can't believe the guy got it right.
