Who?

They go by the name Jamies Elsewhere, a six-piece alternative rock outfit from Sacramento, California. I have to admit, I approached this album having readied myself for the usual onslaught of talented monotony that seems to have overflowed from the alternative music scene of late; I expected to find some well-constructed melodies, semi-self-pitying lyrics and enough skill to be able to award this album a 50% for effort. However, Jamies Elsewhere slapped me on the wrist and taught me not to pre-judge.

How is it?

With the opening track "Life Ain't Easy When You're A Mythical Creature." It begins softly with a gentle piano intro, as you might expect, but is suddenly warped by an alienesque synthetic manipulation which launches you into a thunderous drum fill from Anthony Scarpelli, sandwiched between the joint guitars of Matt Scarpelli and Anthony Carioscia, and topped by the hardcore screech of vocalist Chris Paterson.

As the album continues, you can’t help but be hypnotized by the dichotomy of hard and soft present - not only in Paterson's seamless transition from throat-singing to a feminine falsetto but also in the Jekyll-and-Hyde nature of the melodies as seen in such tracks as "The Politics of Knife Fighting" and "Play Me Something Country." "The Saint, The Sword, And The Savior" is a beautiful escape compiled simply of keyboards, a backdrop drumbeat and computer-altered vocals that appears to be a constant throughout the album. "That Vicious Vixen With the Beard" is a definite highlight, boasting sinister guitar riffs, monstrous vocals and drums that wouldn't be amiss in a heavy metal track.

Jamies Elsewhere is definitely something different; they seem to combine trance and dance with both intense hardcore and gentle melodies. If you're up for some intrigue, this is definitely an album you must check out.

I enjoy it. But they ruined their best songs when they rerecorded them for the album.
I still recommend it though.
