I'm really digging Paul Baribeau. In my opinion, he's the best folk singer still in the game.

i dont know much other than the modern large folk rock acts like bright eyes and shit, and then theres my buddy william doyle, and of course the great bob dylan. but i like it all, i really like the honest aesthetic, and it really allows the most room for something important to be said well in the lyrics.

Never heard of those first four. Looking them up now...

AA Bondy is really chill. I like it.
The Greencards are a little too bluegrass for my taste.
Old Crow is a little too far on the country side than I like but, surprisingly, it's not that bad.
Couldn't find the other guy...

Nice recs, for the most part.

I added Neil Young to the classics, too.

I saw Bondy when he opened for the Weakerthans, and he put on a hell of a show. I've been reccing him like crazy around here.

I found out about Old Crow through Against Me!'s cover of "Wagon Wheel," but I like the original better (Dylan wrote the chorus). I didn't realize they had new songs on their Myspace; look for "I Hear Them All" and, for a more lighthearted song, "Cocaine Habit."

I haven't gotten into a lot of the Greencards, so I don't really know how bluegrass they get; just a couple of songs but I like them, especially "Here You Are."

As far as Stroud goes, he's only got a couple of songs up, here. (http://www.lesstroudonline.com/music/les_les_stroud/player/les_les_stroud.php) I'm thinking of getting the album though. I really enjoy the songs "Clouds" and "Snowshoes and Solitude"; they're pretty relaxing. He gets kind of bluesy at times, which isn't a bad thing, and because of the the lyrical subject matter it's hard not to relate it to the show, but it's got a good vibe to it.

Kids of Cons - really, really awesome group of kids from the dfw area. i'm putting out their cd soon. they haven't really played many shows, but they rule incredibly hard. i think their myspace is www.myspace.com/kidsofcons

Michael Jordan Touchdown Pass - Pat the Bunny's (Johnny Hobo, Wingnut Dishwashers Union) little brother. Kinda like if The Weakerthans and Johnny Hobo produced offspring.

Chris Clavin - Ghost Mice / frmrly Captain Chaos, really, really good new LP out on Crafty Records. It's just as good as the stuff he put out under Captain Chaos, but a little less silly.

Erin Tobey - Erin Tobey

van morrison & paul simon are my jam (among many others)

who is this aa bondy? i've seen a lot of chatter recently, but a lot of it has been in vein of "good if you enjoy someone ripping off old schoolers". now i haven't heard a thing from this band yet, so no judgement from me yet, but been meaning to check them out. how are they sitting with some of you guys?

Here's my take on it: some of his songs are very much in the vein of "the old schoolers" in that it's just him, an acoustic guitar and a harmonica with some foot stomps thrown in here and there. Others have more instrumental depth to them, while still retaining the acoustic base. While he's definitely got a Dylan-esque feel, I wouldn't go so far to say he's ripping him off. In particular, his guitar playing is more intricate. Obviously, I'm biased because I like him a lot, but he's worth at least a listen.

oh i'll definitely be trying it for size myself, i'm not one to buy into popular opinion too readily haha. be keeping what ya said in mind though, it's intriguing me now. especially about the instrumental depth, often a fault/lacking in folk. cheers

Well, I threw in anything with the folk tag tied to it, including acts involved the "nu-folk" and "freak-folk" explosion that started a few years back. CocoRosie fits in there, especially on La Maison De Mon Reve which is the first album I'd recommend. Their last two records haven't been great though.

I prefer Noah's Ark to The Adventures actually. Both were incredibly disappointing but I can listen to the odd track on the former whereas the latter is thoroughly unpleasant. Shame such a promising band went downhill so fast.

I just heard them live a week ago, they're not bad. To be honest, I've never really understood what's classified as folk, but I reckon Bonnie "Prince" Billy qualifies. Tom McRae is also classified in my iTunes as alternative folk, and if that's the case he's my definite favourite.
