View Full Version : Tell me why you hate bands like Simple Plan

I've been listening to punk/emo/alt rock...the whole scene, since like 6th-7th grade...and I thought I was going to grow out of it...but I look at it more deeply than just "simple poppy" punk. I think there are lots of kids like me that love it for what it is. And I think maybe its being analyzed too much. Listen to what you like, play what you like. If you don't like it, don't listen. Now, I'm not saying all I just listen to pop-punk....but why do people find the whole thing completley disrespectful to the punk indie or alternative scene that came before it? Are people trying to tell me that the music I listen to is fake? How do you know that they have taken the culture and forgotten about the ethics?

I don't hate them. It's just, they misrepresent what Punk is to the mainstream. They seem to show everyone that Punk is DC Shoes and Dickies pants. Thus, the wave of posers(erm...mallpunks? I'm not sure what to call 'em.) They're better than Good Charlotte. At least they don't call themselves Punk? Do they? I read somewhere they consider themselves a Pop band. Also, I've heard their former band, Reset, was pretty good.

this topic has been discussed way too many times. You'll get some thought felt responses...then you get ones like the post from dretti.

I personally have no problem with simple plan...I enjoy a good number of their tracks. If you can listen to bands like the starting line or rufio...these guys should be fine to you...but there are people who just hate them for the fact that they're mainstream (you know, the assholes who are the real ones ruining the "punk scene" by constantly worrying about what's new and kool just so they can hate it)..

I dunno, I can disagree with the bands motives and themes (they are a bit old to be singing songs like 'I'm just a kid)...but I'll still like them if they have an appealing sound.

im not biased against mainstream "commercial" punk. in fact, when i first hear something as such on the radio, i always try and give it a few listens before i decide what i think of it.

but in the case of some of these bands, it seems like their more interested in keeping up their 'punk' image so that their loyal fans wont hate them, and then trying to sell that image to all the MTV groupies, more than they care about the music itself. and you can tell that in the way they write their songs.

my exception to that is blink 182. while it is nothing more than simply written pop-punk, for some reason i never seem to hate any of their music. until it gets overplayed anyway.

i tihnk that everyone should just fuck all this " oo there not punk" who cares everyone should just stop wasting their time and just listen to something they really enjoy intsead of sitting here and wasting thier time on something they dont even like. and even if the band says they are punk , there is nothing you can do to change that and that is why the world is the way it is today. yeah everyoe knows they suck now lets move on people!

theres two sides to everything. if people can talk about music they like, why cant we talk about music we hate?

i agree people shouldnt make as big of deal as they do, but that doesnt mean we just have to keep our mouths shut...

Liar.

But seriously, name one emo band you listen to? No, DC is not one.

Simple Plan sucks. Boring, and so terribly unoriginal.

his voice is annoying, i just dont like it, the starting line and rufio are better than them in my opinon, i mean i dont think theyre great (especially rufio because the singers voice is terrible) but theyre much more fun and you can get into them more, simple plan is just kind of annoying in my opinion

If the guy talking about Emo wanted to be a technical bastard, he would say that Sunny Day Real Estate and Rites arn't the beginning of the genre of emo.

However, I don't like Simple Plan becuase anyone can sing like he can, They don't write their own material and they sound just like everything else that blows ass.

MaybeOneDay

It all comes down to this:

If you like it, listen to it. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. No sense complaining about it. Where is it going to get you ?

You're an idiot.

If everyone could sing like him, everyone would be the lead vocalist of a famous pop-punk band. Also, Simple Plan do write all of their own material. They weren't put together by a record label.

I'm not even a Simple Plan fan, but when somebody says something ridiculously stupid like you just did, I can't help but defend them.

it's better than other groups who don't write their own music and are still terrible.

this conversation is pointless though. Simple Plan is a band you hate and you can't deny that their popularity is partially the reason. if TBS were as big as Simple Plan...there would be threads just like this for TBS..this argument only exists because they're so huge...and they got big doing something they love...I can't hate a band for that even if I can't enjoy their music.

It boils down to this:

Style without any substance. Spikey hair and synchronized jumps (or backflips..hint,hint) don't make you a good band, good music does. These bands write shitty, unoriginal music, and their albums are amazingly overproduced. See how much of their material they pull off live. And Simple Plan deserves to be beaten for covering American Jesus.

Fuck those bands though, this thread is now about Rites of Spring and Embrace.

richter915
05/23/04, 08:33 AM
actually, simple plan pulls off their material really really great live. I'm not a big show go-er but their live show is pretty spectacular. Better than shitty bands like PTW who just go on stage and scream their balls off...

what the heck are rites of spring and embrace? who do they resemble sound-wise?

Reason I dont like simple plan is cus I dont like any bands that play just for the money.

My gripe with Simple Plan is that, for a pretty mediocre band, they are lavished with all this money and attention from people who wouldn't even listen to pop-punk otherwise.

Am I saying that I don't listen to any mediocre pop-punk bands? Nope, I love mediocre pop-punk bands. But none of the mediocre pop-punk bands that I listen to are paid the countless millions that Simple Plan is paid, nor are these bands regarded as the epitome of "punk" to preadolescent girls everywhere like Simple Plan (and Good Charlotte) are.

If these preadolescent girls would venture a little deeper into the scene and start giving some attention and support to bands who deserve it more, than maybe Simple Plan wouldn't seem so offending in my mind.

Sorry you asshole. I don't own their album, but someone posted a reply on this board that said in their cd booklet it said someone else wrote their lyrics. And yeah you fucker, he has an awesome voice, shit no, ANYONE that has an concept of how to use their vocal range can sing in the "I'm the lead singer of a famous pop-punk band"voice. It's completely unoriginal and uninspired music. And I didn't say they were put together did I?
