If nobody bought your album, would you hope that soundscan would lie and say you'd gone platinum?

If it got me signed and/or paid more, yes.

you act like getting signed is the only thing that matters. it doesnt even secure your career for all you know you could just be selling your music to someone who wants to use it like a credit card, and can drop you whenever they feel like it, only then the music isnt yours anymore.

Haha, I've thought this a thousand times, but I'll finally just say it. I love Patrick Howell.

If my sarcasm wasn't obvious from the first post, I was hoping that 2nd one would secure it.

an adder wont help you really. Just be patient, make connections with people that you add manually, and talk to promotion groups/ other bands. Fan bases take FOREVER to build so dont be discouraged if you aren't getting plays.

Psst.
Everyone in here thought it was a stupid idea.
What an interesting question. In the 60's john lennon used to dress up as different people and film his own intervies saying about how the beatles were great

trust me, if you do get signed, you'll be more in debt, and even more since no one really likes your band except yourself.

You could write some good music and promote it honestly?
PAHA actually no, no-one does that anymore do they?
I'm fucking sick of these fake myspace bands. All it does is stop people from listening to the genuine talent on myspace and other such sites.
People like you give unsigned bands a bad name.

What does everyone here think about friend adders?
More importantly, anyone know any good ones?

I don't see how a myspace friend adder is not ethical. It just saves you a lot of finger pain from clicking add on all those people. Is there a misconception that you can't promote your music to actual fans with an adder?

Eh, with everyone BAWWING over the play adder I figured someone would have some beef with a friend adder.
Honestly, what's a play adder going to do to promote your band? It just seems kinda silly to me.

I am totally fine with friend adders, as long as it's honest and not used for spam, that way you give people a choice and it's not fake,
FriendBlasterPro is good,
Torrents are illegal.

What we did was to find the myspace pages for our local radio stations and zines in our genre and used a myspace adder to start sending all of their friends friend requests and messages. That way we were targeting people who were likely to like our music. We got a good response, it worked really well, and I think led to us getting some shows and getting on a benefit comp.

being in a band it you feel like your being judged by how many plays and friends you have. it sucks but it does seem that you do get more oppurtunitys if you have more plays and or more friends.
I cant seem to do it with my band because i would hate to have our account banned and it feels like your cheating (but if everyone seems to be doing it??????)
I really dont think its probable to have thousands of plays but only 5 comments in the last few days. you know have came across those bands
sorry for the ramble

Myspace doesn't ban any band sending less than a couple hundred friend requests a day.

yeah cause then everyone would start buying it.. most people just like what other people tell them to like, if soundscope said my album had gone platinum then it must be good,

I used one of thosep lay increaser things on my old rap-metal band, haha. It worked pretty well, and it was pretty funny to have my shitty rap-metal band have a crazy amount of plays.
But if you're a real band,I wouldnt use it though,I mean, yea, music can be a fucked up dog-eat-dog business, but if its all fake, how can you really judge how good you are?

if youre that intent on having massive amounts of plays, sit your lazy ass in the computer chair, sign into your personal account and personally reload your page every 10 minutes that way someone is at least listening to your music. My band is averaging 75 plays a day right now after playing a few shows and only having live music up on our site...were recording now and touring (note: TOURING) in June to make things happen.
If you want a bigger fan-base, then suck up the cash and tour. Play everywhere you can get a show (play 3 shows a day if you have to/can) and make sure your music is solid and accessible to a large group of people. If you are trying to be 100% unique and blending 200% unrelated genres, then i wish you good luck. Most labels, even indie, know exactly what theyre looking for already, they know what will sell and dont give a shit about a special new genre unless its fucking AMAZING.
But I'm telling you now, if you use a friend adder...you will lose massive amounts of respect from a lot of bands that would otherwise be willing to help you to the best of their abilities.
sorry about length.

Do this if you feel comfortable with it. I know that I couldnt,.
My friend's band did this to his band's Myspace. Then they would play shows, and no one would go for them.
You can't fake fans...so there's no point in faking plays.

Why not just make music that doesn't suck? Keep in mind, I have NEVER herd your band at all as I am typing this. So it could be phenomenal for all I know.
What a dumb question.
