View Full Version : It's Like That Tag on My Mattress I Am Too Scared To Remove

I thought that some of you would find it interesting to see the lengths that record labels are going to now to keep their albums from being released online. I have scanned in the packaging of the new My Chemical Romance advance, here (http://forum.absolutepunk.net/mm/displayimage.php?pos=-1723), and I think it's the most protected of any release I have ever received - I was almost scared to open it.

damn, why is that most cds that are like that are more from the indie type labels rather than those such as island and geffen?

I wonder if they can really find out or if its all a bunch of shit.

yeah i used to work for a record store and they would send us shit like that all the time...it was weird. Yet if you talked to their promotional distributor they would give us as many copies of the cd that we wanted. The promo copy is meant to spread the word, they are willing to print the copies and give them away for free, why not let us burn them and save them the production of these promo cds. most kids who steal albums off the net, well at least me. I will still buy the cd. I like the package and I like to support bands I like. If i dont like the album I downloaded I delete it. We have video rental stores. I see it the same as when we get albums off the net.

How exactly is it "watermarked"? Unless the songs on each CD are different.
I mean, if theres like a byte changed or something, whoopdie do. You can use different encoders/bitrates/cut a few seconds off. All of that will change the MD5 sum.
I'm curious as to how they "watermarked" these discs. My guess is they're just trying to scare you.

Agreed. These aren't like DVDs where you can put an actual watermark on the movie itself. There is nothing you can do to audio without somehow distorting all the sound. And if it is just a matter of bits and bytes (like was said before), that would get thrown out the window the second it was encoded.

all the same, i wouldn't put my money on the fact that it isn't..

not if the watermark is actually embedded into the audio, if there is a watermark in the audio, then even a 30 second clip will have the watermark.

If I were MCR I'd do the same thing, for fear of everyone discovering how much it sucks.

yeah...except you have to pay to rent a movie. but i don't see what the big deal with downloading is either. i mean, you don't have to pay to listen to the radio, so how is downloading any different? the lables just wanna get paid. geez, people will do anything to make a buck...

So your going to post the entire CD right Jason?

It's the price you pay for getting an advanced copy.
not if the watermark is actually embedded into the audio, if there is a watermark in the audio, then even a 30 second clip will have the watermark.
But it would have to be an audible watermark, and I imagine it would be relatively difficult to make a unique audible watermark for each pre-release CD they sent out. A bit-level watermark would easily be destroyed by compression.

not if say the water mark was an overlay, a super high frequency .. it could be applied after the fact as its being pressed, and be unique.
the CD itself says that the watermark "is not changd by extracting clips f the music, or by using any compression" and seeing as they took the time to print my actual name on the CD .. i could see them taking the time to make the audio watermark unique for each release. above all, even being a scare tactic..it worked! im not letting anyone on staff even have this!

Do they really think protecting advance CDs will make a difference?? I enjoy listening to a CD before it actually comes out and when it does, I'll buy it, but I'm not going to buy a cd until I hear it first. Listening to it early is just a perk, not a necessity. If I don't get to hear the My Chemical Romance CD until after June 9th, that's fine, but I'm not going to buy it until I do.
Just wait until all CDs are released like this and first week sales decline even further, until there's no other logical conclusion other than the fact that people want to hear the CD before they buy it.
I think it'll be funny to watch as second week sales for CDs grow to be higher than first week sales, and the music industry still won't accept the fact that people want to hear it first.

The same thing is happening to Midtown's new CD. I saw the copy that columbia records sent out to magazines and it's copy-protected. I think it was a mp3/cd type thing.
:piss: gosh, MCR must really like money
:piss: geez, people will do anything to make a buck...
for what? doing their job? what a concept!!!!
You guys are so punk :asshole:S
FUCK THE RECORD LABELS. even though it's their "bucks" that give us the music we love.

PS: I won't even respond to the point about how downloading is the same as radio because that is just TOO stupid to merit a response.
PSS: Swedishheat is the only one who actually made a good pro-downloading point btw.
And the only reason i used all these icons 'n shit is because it's impossible to get some of you moronic thick headed idiots to pay attention to a point that doesn't agree with yours.

That is pretty lame. Sometimes that type of crap prevents the cd from playing in cd players such as mine. And my brother is always telling me that no matter how hard they try, you can't make a cd un-copyable (not a word, I know) because sooner or later someone is going to figure out how to copy it.

There is an entire community of collectors who love these unique pressings of promo CDs.
Ebay "Drag City Records" and you'll see.
Then put your copy online: the Jason Tate MCR edition. I'll bid on that shit.

Preach on brother, i agree with you.
:iamwithst
i love how people on this board choose to just BLATANTLY ignore any alternate viewpoints and just continue on their own conversations with people who agree with them.
And people ask why punks are so antisocial.
If you're gonna prove a point or even make a point for the matter, you HAVE TO acknowlege counter-arguments, but everyone here is too much of a moron or too scenster to understand that.
I HATE THE SCENE.
but LOVE the music.
What i don't understand is how a group of antisocial morons claimed punk as their own before the internet.
Oh yeah, back then they actually had something to be pissed about most of the time.
Now, all the "punk scene" is is a bunch of whining babies who probably don't say more than 5 words in public, come home to their ap.net forums and just RANT because they're too insecure or too emo to learn to get along with anyone else.
Now i'm not talking about everyone, just to the people who know who i'm talking to.
-MIke
don't talk to them if u hate them so much. and if u hate the scene i do not understand why you ENJOY reading about it so much. O_o
I HATE HATERS!
first off-- i enjoy reading about the music i love... period, that's why i come here, it's where i hear about music and get my punk news.
second-- what i HATE, the actual point i was trying to make that you failed to acknowledge, is how the people here don't listen to other people's opinions unless they are the same as their own.
Just because i hate the scene doesnt' mean i hate the site, the music or anything, because, as much as some people want it to be, the scene is NOT synonymous with the music and/or this site.
morons-- only read what they want to, ignore everything else.
fuckin idiots.
MIke
yea i agree with you. sorry for misunderstanding. i like to read everything and be respectful of others opinions.

..I'm just going to laugh...haha
^^^
(if that wasn't aimed at me i apologize in advance and just ignore what i say, but if not...)
Again: another holier than thou one liner from a scenster that fails to actually acknowledge my point and give a well thought out reason why I'm wrong.
