ive been saying for years that unless a band has some haricuts and a fucking zillion myspace plays then people miss out on the best shows. in portland we have a band that sing about literature and every show they get like 400 books and throw them at the audience while they play. we also have a pirate band that fights a ninja band at different venues with their sets. most kids are fucking idiots when it comes to seeing bands. most of the times the $5 shows are better then the $20.

the great thing about portland is that it rains so much everyone is forced to be inside all the time making us all artists in some form or another. every night there are like 12 bands, 5 open mic nights, 2 art openings, book readings, plays, cheap ass movies with dollar pabst (next week im seeing aliens for 3 bucks at the theatre). that and we have the best bar culture makes this town rule.

This whole concept of this kind of music being a "genre" of itself is stupid. It's pop punk. What influences the instrumentation and vocals and whatnot does nothing to distinguish it as a separate genre from pop punk or hardcore. It's clearly not hardcore, but there's no real meshing of the genres so to speak.

Jesus christ. Every single time one of these topics is made a bunch of idiots come in here to tell everyone "LOL ITS TECHNO". Who gives a shit? You know exactly what kind of music they're looking for. Some people just have way too much time on their hands.
Regardless. Yes most of those bands listed were pop-punk, but that really isn't the point.
If you want to listen to why most of those bands are even making the music they are listen to Saves the Day's first two albums, Can't Slow Down and Through Being Cool.
yea but calling this shit happy hardcore is like calling Brand New hip hop.

This whole concept of this kind of music being a "genre" of itself is stupid. It's pop punk. What influences the instrumentation and vocals and whatnot does nothing to distinguish it as a separate genre from pop punk or hardcore. It's clearly not hardcore, but there's no real meshing of the genres so to speak.
i consider it pop punk with hardcore tendencies. like pop punk with breakdowns and two step parts.

Unfortunately it's a name that's being used a lot in America. Yeah, it's just pop-punk with occasional heaviness and breakdowns. It's like calling music emo, not many know the actual meaning behind it but say it anyway and it stuck.
people that dont know meaning behind emo are just misinformed, uneducated, and stupid for believing everything they see in the mainstream.
it's like saying if wikipedia, the television, alt press, mtv told you to jump off a bridge... would you listen to them then too?

Regardless, it's what the general population believes and therefore what most people see it as. It doesn't matter if it's correct or not because we don't have info police going around informing the uninformed.
That being said, I've never even heard of Happy Hardcore Trance or whatever until I came to these boards. I really don't see how it could be popular. At least not in my area.

even then... happy hardcore to describe these bands is an oxymoron...
yea sure their guitars are tuned higher, and the music is more whatever... but they are singing about missing girls, being sad, singing about pirates and other stupid shit.
positive/happy bands singing about friends/family/unity/doing whats right, also may have heavy toned guitars and music... but still more "happy" in terms of their message. unlike what these bands are playing

Uh. I'm not sure what songs you've been listening to, but I haven't really noticed that in a lot of bands that I listen to that people would call "happy hardcore". I'm actually listening to Set Your Goals right now and the song is about religion, so I don't think it's all about missing girls.

the quick bullet: a tough one to dodge
no one ever does
it cuts fast and deep, keeps you from sleep
and you just have to let it bleed
i know the pain
it's all too familiar
if i could sing
words to help you know i would
and they would end the pain
but you will have to let this make you stronger
it's difficult to overcome
the name of a ghost still dancing on our tongues
so bittersweet, these memories
i wish they could have taken me
struggle through tough times
and destroy all your fears
DON'T LET THIS WIN OVER YOU
soon you will end the pain
and you will say that it did make you stronger
this is how you overcome
and we’ve all heard it sung
we really don't know what we've got 'til it's gone
and then we want it back so much
voices fade away
voices fade away
as the memory remains
memory remains
nobody ever warned you
ever warned you
breathe in
take it in deep
cross your heart, it's yours for you to keep
wishful
i guess i never was
i am looking up now, death can change us
breathe in
take it in deep
cross your heart, it's yours for you to keep
wishful
i guess i never was
i am looking up now, death can change us
and i will keep pieces of you
alive in me, your spirit carries on
and i will keep pieces of you
alive in me, your spirit carries on
i will stand alone
i will learn from this, i will
i will mourn the loss
and I will be stronger
i will stand alone
i will learn from this, i will
i will mourn the loss
and I will be stronger
I VALUE YOU MORE THAN
you will ever know
i know i'm not the only one
concerned about where this has gone
the feelings that we both once shared
they still exist; they went nowhere
and you, you know it's true
for you i am still here
i hate to see it end this way
it plagues my conscience every day
and i want nothing more
all i need lies in you
don't say this is the end
i know i'm not the only one
who wishes we could get along
the hanging out from eight to three
never wanting to fall asleep
i just hope that you
will work with me
to make this right we can't
just give up it's not fair
this road is long if you
will work with me
then i can say i won't
just give up it's not fair
you know it's true
don't pretend that you don't
tomorrow if we don't speak
a piece of my heart you will keep
and we, we know it's true
this is harder than i thought
this can't be how it ends
this can't be how this ends
you have me waiting
waiting
waiting in suspense
i just don't want it
tell me where you stand
quit walking on a fence
please just don't tell me
so tell me
tell me
that you don't know what i mean
so wake up
this is not a dream
time is running on
and it isn't slowing down
never on my side
you hate when i'm around
show me, show me what you said
is what, what you truly meant
don't say that i have to
lose another friend
this very moment
nothing else is this important
this very moment
nothing else is this important
show me what you said
is truly what you meant
Look me in the eyes and tell the truth: what was going through your head?
I'd hang up the phone at times, and I'd wish that you were dead.
'Cause you were never there.
It made me think you never cared.
Growing up and it's not fair.
I'd turn around and hope to see you there, but you were nowhere to be found.
So spare me. You're still just a stranger to me.
(Broken!)
Will you ever be...
(Shadow!)
...more than a stranger to me?
The closer I get to you, the harder it hits.
Now you walk away. Don't look back on family you never had and never will.
The closer I get to you the harder it hits, and it hits so hard.
I force myself to remember memories that were never there.
Your face is a broken shadow.
Now all I want is to go home. I never did figure out what those words were all about.
Tell me! Tell me just how many times you let me down. (let down!)
The countless times that I waited for you in vain.
Tell me what was going through your head?
Did you second guess those things that were never said?
'Cause you were never there. It made me think you never cared.
Did you ever care? I guess I'll never know...
10 o’ clock on Monday night, and I’m still in the past
Feelings change, and people fade, but the memories, they last
I missed the chance, slipped through my hands, I wish I could go back
I’d change it all. The words I’d say, reflecting back on yesterday
But now I’ve turned the tables
and I’ve had time to make amends and find my friends
Oh, I’ve made mistakes, I know this. But I can’t change the past
And I can’t change you
10 o’ clock on Monday night, and I’m still in the past
Feelings change, and people fade, but the memories, they last
Can’t change you! I’m stuck in the past!
ya know, I could keep going... but I'll stop there... nothing happy at all about that shit. like I said, just because the guitars are tuned high doesn't mean these mother fuckers still dont cry.

Protested Hero,
it astounds me how in every argument you get in on this forum, you make the most idiotic points that you could make.
1) if it's your contention that we should call this music happy-hardcore because that's what "most people" are going to say this style of music is, then you're being an idiot since the techno called "happy hardcore" is way more popular, both in Europe and the United States.
2) if its your contention that we should call it happy hardcore because you've never heard of this genre before coming to AP.net, well then you're just an ignorant moron. Of course, we knew this from having a name that references a worthless band like Protest the Hero.
The forum would be a much better place if you took your Say Anything-hyping, generic pop rock loving self away from here because you couldn't understand a genre if your life depended on it.
and some day it will because you'll call Waking The Cadaver "death metal" because you scenesters like that shit, and some Mayhem junkie will make your skull into another cereal bowl.

None of the bands mentioned in this thread are pop punk. Pop punk= punk bands with pop sensibilities. What people here think is pop punk is really the opposite: pop rock bands with punk aesthetic/sensibilities. I can see how it would be a hard distinction to understand without hearing it but there really is a big difference between a real pop punk band and these bands.

Youth Crew pretty much originated with Youth of Today but was heavily influenced by bands like 7 Seconds, Warzone, and DYS. It referred to the "crew" of straight edge kids/"youth" in NYC/CT/etc. in the mid 80s. Youth of Today had a song called "Youth Crew"; these are the lyrics:
Me you youth crew!
if the world was flat I'd grind the edge
to the positive youth my heart I pledge
X on my hand now take the oath
to positive youth to positive growth
to positive minds, to pure clean souls
these will be all my goals
walk with me and my crew
there is so much shit we can do
and we won't stop until we're through
Clearly not as good lyrically as their later material but whatever. Anyway, they influenced a ton of bands in the late 80s like Bold, Turning Point, Wide Awake, Gorilla Biscuits, etc. The sound/clothing/look/etc. was referred to as youth crew hardcore and the rest is history.

This is a pretty good (and more in-depth) explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Crew

Okay, thanks. I've heard Gorilla Biscuits, but I've never seen them labeled as anything but hardcore. The others I'm not familiar with.

now that i think about it, comeback kids wake the dead is pretty goddamned poppy. like the chorus on the title track is epic and catchy. man i love this band. andrew is doing a fine job but scott really made that bands sound.

yea sure their guitars are tuned higher, and the music is more whatever... but they are singing about missing girls, being sad, singing about pirates and other stupid shit.
this song is definitely not about a girl

Who gives a fuck if you wonder who gives a fuck what I call it?
Also you require a question mark at the end of your question. :-)

People need to stop adding "core" to the end of other genres.
People need to stop adding "core" to the end of other genres.
yea probably agreed, my statement was a joke anyways.
Music is music, nowadays it's hard to place everything in a genre,
I'll stick with:
"Rock"
"Country"
"Hip-Hop"
"R&B"
"Techno"
"Other"
maybe a few more, but you get the jist, if I like a band it doesn't matter what genre their in.
Let's not forget the first perpetrator of the suffix core was emocore, which produced some amazing bands. Still agreed though.

I just say what bands sound like the band I'm trying to show to someone, rather than saying,
"LoLz Oh yea, they're TOTALLY post-easycore indie subpop electronica LOL"

i tell people to listen for themselves.
i tell people to listen for themselves.
Yea but, if I give someone a CD and they can't listen to them on the spot it helps to say, "oh yea, this band sounds a bit like Everytime I Die" or whoever.
