Just got back from seeing The Dark Knight and I got to see the Terminator preview.
There was a description on the net awhile back and this trailer is not that one at all.
It is def. just a teaser, but its got me pumped up. (The Terminator theme always does).
I figured I would start the thread so when people see the trailer we can discuss how McG could fuck this up or perhaps how Christian Bale could outweigh the McGness.

"Prometheus
We are half way through filming. Our teaser is in theaters and playing
before The Dark Knight.
You will see that this is a movie inspired by the first films, but is a true new beginning in that it takes place in the future.
All three Terminator films took place present day, with Terminators
traveling back in time to attack. This picture takes place after Judgment
Day. It happened. Everything is gone. The story of the movie is the "brink
moment" Reese always talked about.
From a technical perspective, we have set out to achieve a completely new
visual style that hasn't been seen before. We're shooting the film on color
stock but are using a method inspired by the Oz process which was developed
at Technicolor by Mike Zacharia and Bob Olson. Basically we are adding three
times as much silver. It creates a surreal texture that is in keeping with
the notion of the entire picture - feeling detached from the world we know
today.
Every morning and every night Christian and I work on the story. Sam's
contribution has been excellent. We are committed to putting the story and
character first and then supplementing that with action and visual effects.
It is our intention to make a film on a large scale with the nuance and
subtext of a high quality independent picture.
The richness of the story is really coming out now. It's a Prometheus tale
really, how creating life creates real responsibility - and if left
unchecked, can be our undoing.
The entire crew takes the making of this film very seriously. I made a point
of hiring key personnel that are passionate about getting this right.
Everyone is well versed in the mythology.
Comicon is this weekend. I look forward to sharing the film with the
passionate.
McG"

Great update (http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/07/26/comic-con-08-awesome-terminator-salvation-updates-rated-r/) from firstshowing.net:
As McG explains, they're going to honor the mythology, but they can take a license to tell the most compelling story possible. So throughout the production they've met with everyone, from Arnold to Cameron and so on, but haven't got too caught up in the timeline of the other movies or even the TV show because they'd rather just tell a good story. Even Sam Worthington chimed in to say that they wanted to take what Cameron's movies said about fate and humanity and increase and expand it in Terminator Salvation. And if that doesn't instill any more confidence in you now, then there's no hope.

Arnold saw some footage and here is his reaction:
"I still don't know how it will play out with this one," said the star-turned-politician, who said he was given a private screening of early footage from "Terminator Salvation (http://topics.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/terminator-salvation)" by producers of the franchise reboot directed by McG. "They showed me some footage, but I don't have a feel for the movie. I didn't see enough. I wasn't sure who the Terminator was. I don't know if there is one or if he's the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be."

agreed, and since the CGI technology exists now, they can make whole armies of different terminators doing battle with the humans without the huge costs that it took circa 1980s with T2 for just a few shots.

from Latino Review:
I should make it clear, i have varous contacts in WB and from what i’ve been told the fans are in for a treat. The premise of Arnie’s involvement is to have a fully rendered digital face of Arnie replacing the recently cast Roland Kickinger (The Younger version of Arnie). It seems the Director Mc G [Mayor McCheese] will in no doubt try all he can to ensure the Governator has some sort of involvement and as a result Arnold was on set providing key ADR (Voice over) for the visual effects guys to reference during post production. You have to remember, Arnold’s commitments are preventing his return to the movie business and this seems the best logical way to ensure his involvement.
You may recall Christopher Lee’s face being embossed on a stunt double in the Star Wars prequels?, imagine that with Arnold and you will get the picture.

Pitch Terminator Salvation to us.
McG: The whole idea for doing this movie is to honour the first three movies but begin again. The big difference is we're post-Judgement Day, whereas the other pictures were all contemporary, with Terminators coming back in time. It's deep post-Judgement Day, it's a new beginning, and because the future is malleable, there are a great many places to go.
One of the joys of this picture is it explores the space between Judgement Day and the becoming of the T800. So we get to see all the research and development that went into the proficiency of the T800. It's like an Apple computer; the first ones you got 15 years ago had 2 megs of memory, and they weren't so fast. And now today it's the Macbook air and it does back flips. You know, it's the same thing with the Machine world. And it suggests a world that's less based in science fiction than it was when Jim Cameron was making the movies.
How do you mean?
McG: Well we live in a time where if you have an arthritic shoulder, they'll give you a new one. We can make a 70-year-old woman pregnant, and deconstruct the human genome. And certainly the days of talking to a psychiatrist about your mommy and daddy issues are over -- they just want to manipulate your serotonin levels. And therefore it's real -- it's here. It's now. That wasn't the case when Ridley Scott made Blade Runner, or the first Terminator pictures, or even when the first Matrix came out. So in response our film was designed to have that tactile reality of Children of Men, or even the Bourne franchise.
Are there obvious elements in the previous movies that have to come back into play in yours?
McG: Certainly. We pay off a great many things that are established -- particularly with Kyle Reese. We talk about the mythology of his shotgun strap, his proficiency for stealing cars, and we see where he learned a lot of these skills. And it wasn't from Connor, it was from the Marcus character, which is one of the joys of the picture. We cite "Pain can be controlled, you just disconnect it," you know, and we realise where he got that, and there's a great many tidbits for the hard-core fans out there. But it's designed as well for people who don't know that much about the ins and outs of the first films.
Any "Hasta la vista, baby" moments?
McG: We're working on a few. But I would never be so bold as to say we'll have that good fortune of, you know, stuff sticking around to that degree. [Laughs]
You've got a really talented team of writers on board.
McG: Yeah, we wanted it to be written with the deftest pens possible. There's a writing team called Ferris and Brancato that wrote the original draft. Then when I got involved, I brought in Paul Haggis, we worked for about 2 months on the script, with Christian as well. He taught us a great deal about character. Then we brought in Jonathan Nolan -- who wrote the Batman pictures, Prestige, and largely Memento. So it's a very cerebral bunch that's here to make a film of the highest quality.
What were the most complicated scenes to shoot?
McG: Well a lot of the scenes take place in one shot, and figuring out places to hide the cuts... Again, I go to Children of Men -- the car sequence, where the motorbikes come, and Julianne Moore is shot, and the whole thing plays in one shot. Figuring that out is very difficult, and you've got to figure out exactly where you're going to have your blend points; you need to measure everything off, and consult with the visual effects people.
There's a big gas station sequence that had that, and that was very, very tedious, and very, very technical filmmaking. And that's why I love this film -- one day we're shooting a very intimate, character-driven scene, and there's nothing going on but Connor and his wife in a room, and she's the only one he can talk to about what's on his mind. And then the next day we're, you know, blowing up half of New Mexico, and going to a place of extraordinary action. So those are decidedly different hats to wear, day in, day out.
Do you deliberately do as much physically as you can? George Lucas would shoot the whole thing on a green screen, with guys wearing ping-pong balls...
McG: I say with respect to George Lucas, who I adore, I don't like that at all. This is why Stan Winston's team is here. We do as much practically and in camera as possible. I want the machines to be real and we built all the machines. We built all the prosthetics. And then they're accentuated and added to, certainly.
McG: I believe in visual effects completely. But I just don't believe in saying, "throw up the green screen, and let's make it happen." I think the audience has become so skilled in recognising that - they sniff it out and it loses its potency. We're going to have 800 CGI shots in this -- I mean it's a CG festival, that's why I brought in the best minds in the business to come in and get it done - but we don't just say, "put a blue sleeve on the Marcus character," I mean -- the guy spent six hours in make-up.
How do you inject humour and warmth into this universe?
McG: I don't. There's not a great deal of humour and warmth in this universe. It's very largely influenced by the Cormac McCarthy novel The Road. It's designed to feel that way -- detached and existential, it's got a great deal of Camus' The Stranger in it. But there's a gallows humour. We could all be in a bunker somewhere, and every now and again, you elbow the guy next to you and you make a wisecrack -- what else are you going to do? It's one of the defining characteristics of being human, even in the face of death. But the movie is designed to be very serious and very credible.
Could you take Linda Hamilton in a fight?
McG: Most certainly not. After those pull-ups in the psychiatric ward, I don't think I could make that happen.

if it's a good movie, i couldn't care less what the rating will be. yea, it sucks that there probably won't be a lot of bloody scenes, but given how lenient the MPAA could be with their ratings towards big blockbuster franchises (TDK, Casino Royale), there should still be a good amount of violence.

Yeah I was going to say, Dark Knight was PG-13 people and we all know how great that turned out. Oh no, so we might not see Bloodgood's tits or a head explode. It's not a dealbreaker nor should it be.
Christian Bale is IMO, perfect for an adult John Connor. I have high hopes for this movie, I really hope it's not a letdown.

Apparently you don't remember in T-3 when the female terminator puts her hands through the cop and drives with her arm through him from the backseat. Or Arnold cutting his arm off in T2 or him getting his head cut into in multiple movies. Or John Conners foster parents getting killed and the blade sticking through his head. I'm sure there are plenty of other violent scenes I don't remember off the top of my head. As for language I recently watched it and it had next to no cussing. The series was pretty much R for violence and gore.
As for Dark Night and Casino Royale while they were violent both of those series were never very gory so its doesn't pertain to them. PG -13 movies can be very violent but they can't show much blood or gore so that rating will drastically affect Terminator Salvation
I agree with this. I feel the more blood and gore there is, the more realistic the movie feels. When somebody gets stabbed, naturally, there will be blood. I don't wanna see someone hit the ground with no blood. It's dumb.
drudo182

i just watched the first terminator last night, and honestly, i've seen a lot worse on tv these days when it comes to some of the blood scenes. they do drop the f bomb occasionally and there is a sex scene which makes it an obvious R, but take those 2 things away in today's time and i think it really could be pushing a pg-13 rating.

Just got back from an early screening in Ft. Lauderdale. I'll keep this spoiler-free, even though it's kinda hard to post my initial thoughts right off the bat because the film kinda threw me off in some ways. It obviously wasn't meant to feel anything like the Terminator films we're all used to because there's no lone machine out to kill our protagonist(s). It's simply set up as a story displaying the tumultuous nature of a war that seems impossible to win. But my main complaints have to do with some pretty serious pacing issues, and more than anything else, the fact that I found it really hard to give a damn about any of the characters. Maybe with the exception of Marcus, but for me that only happened near the end when he discovers who did that to him and why.
The film does have some insane action spectacles though, I'll give McG that for sure. The scene we're all familiar with revolving the Harvester at the gas station is insanity from beginning to end. Sam Worthington has great presence, and he's actually been given the far more interesting role in the film, as Christian Bale didn't really seem to have much to work with considering the things many of us have seen him pull on-screen. Anton Yelchin was great, but that dude won me over very recently with Star Trek, so I was naturally pulling for him to do well. I'd love to see where they take the story in the next one, but I think there's a lot of work to be done in terms of focusing the narrative and giving the thing some heart to pull the viewer in. It's what makes a good movie in the first place.

I was hoping it would be less action more story

With all the time you spend on entertainment, you should keep a blog in which you post reactions to movie/tv news with the occasional review.
I think I will, Adrian. The more movies piss me off, the more inspired I get, haha.

Don't get me wrong, it is heavy on story. It just feels disjointed most of the time, and you're asked to invest in characters because you know who they are, not what the story gives you. Not a completely bad film, I think...it just feels empty.

Just came into this thread to say this is my least anticipated film of 2009, and im really tired of seeing the trailer.

I've read quite a bit about how there really isn't anyone to fully invest into except Sam Worthington's character. Also heard a lot of positive things about Yelchin playing Kyle Reese. I'm looking forward to those two the most I think.
How much is Bryce Dallas Howard in it?

She didn't really do very much in this film. Most of her scenes are actually in the trailer, which is hella lame cause she is great. But you're right about Marcus and Kyle, those two are the easiest to care about...

Am I only the one who didn't think T3 was complete trash? Nothing great, but I didn't hate it. Loved the ending.
And I haven't heard a lot of great things about Bale either.

It wasn't bad, but to follow up to T2 was a bit tough. I think this movie will be good for the action junkies (myself included) and fans of the franchise.

This is my favorite movie franchise, so I'll end up seeing it no matter what the reviews. But I can't help from being disappointed at all the negative stuff being said so far. I was annoyed when I initially saw McG directing it, but I thought Bale and Nolan could make it into a solid movie.

The problem isn't so much in his performance, it's the fact that he's given absolutely NOTHING to do in this except, squint, grunt and get thrashed around. That's literally it. Like Harry Knowles said in his review, the whole point of having John Connor in this film is so you can see him get that scar we glimpsed in T2.
To me...the whole movie had zero heart, and that's what's crushing about something that looked so fucking cool in those latest trailers.

LOL. Wow.
I hate the film. Pure and simple. I loathe it. I hated it so much I didn’t want to see my friend’s faces afterwards. I just wanted to go home and vent. I really really hate this film. I hate how much effort so many great artists and technicians put into a film that’s this fucking bad. Ultimately its just shit moving, like a sewer pipe. I hate that there isn’t a sustained scene or sequence that I love as much as the best moment from TERMINATOR 3. I hate that when I left the theater I felt empty and let down. That I felt like writing a review like this instead of fucking dry humping a great TERMINATOR movie.
This feels like ALIEN RESURRECTION to me. Something that kills something wonderful for me. I’m no longer interested in Terminator. McG terminated my enthusiasm. I love the first two films. At least I’ll always have that. Fuck this movie.

Well, yeah. I don't think saying so is even necessary. Honestly, I guarantee I leave this film feeling about the same I did after Star Trek. Just in terms of my personal interests, a fantastic Star Trek film is still only as good as a mediocre Terminator film.
