i dont have an all time list ive only been listening to music seriously for 5 years and most of what i listen to is very modern, i dont know of many classics yet. but my favorites at the moment:

brand new - deja entendu
thrice - the alchemy index
say anything - is a real boy
death cab -transatlanticism
boys night out - trainwreck.

very cliche, i know. but it diversifies after that.

Angylion Gefell

very good list.

this is going to be very difficult, and not totally accurate, but here it goes:

Say Anything - Is a Real Boy
Jimmy Eat World - Futures
The Starting Line - Based On a True Story
Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Girl
Anberlin - Cities

but like i said, that isn't totally complete, i don't know if i could make an accurate top 5. so i'll list my honorable mentions:

Underoath - Define the Great Line
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticsm
Jack's Mannequin - Everything In Transit
Blink 182 - Enema of the State
Thrid Eye Blind - s/t

Who the fuck cares what Rolling Stone has to say?

I listen to the Beatles because the music is phenomenal and their catalog is large enough and diverse enough to satisfy just about any genre-urge I might have.

Wow, making up my mind for myself and not based on a "popular music magazine". What a concept.

Wow, making up my mind for myself and not based on a "popular music magazine". What a concept.

Radiohead - Ok Computer/Kid A
Elliott Smith - Either/Or(to the uninformed ones, this isnt a tie)
Sufjan Stevens - Come On Feel The Illinoise!
Arcade Fire - Funeral/Neon Bible
The Early November - The Mother, The Mechanic, and The Path

i think that looks good enough. i knows its probably a sin to not have any beatles albums listed. but im not a very big fan and dont feel the need to listen to them because rolling stone tells me too.

Hmm... can't say I've had that problem at all. They're one of the few bands I can listen to for hours on end and never get bored with.

I guess I can see what you're saying about them being overrated, but I see it a little differently. They were absolutely amazing and without a doubt the most influential rock band of all time, but a lot of fans try to talk about them in completely objective terms, like "OMG best band EVAR!" I don't think you can really make objective judgements about something as subjective as musical tastes, and when everyone acts like you can and should it is a bit of a turnoff. So while I think the world of them and I get great joy from their music, the stuff people say about them can get a little annoying sometimes.

What have you heard by them? I think some people just listen to the wrong album first and get turned off to the rest of their stuff. If you're getting bored with them, try a different album and see what happens.

I don't hide that I listen to Good Charlotte (Hell, I'm seeing them tomorrow night) , Lostprophets, or anything else mainstream. Good music is good music, and those bands appealed to me when I first heard them.

However, to assume that someone discovered those bands (or the Beatles, since that was what brought up to start this) through Rolling Stone, MTV, or any other media outlet or chose them as a favorite because of them without knowing the person is a little outlandish, as you did with everyone who has chosen a Beatles record in their top 5.

It would have been impressive if I discovered The Beatles through Rolling Stone, as I discovered their music around the age of 3, which was before I could read. But I can't claim to have done something that cool. My dad gave me a tape.

Yeah, top 5 is tough. I am big into a lot of different stuff, like in this list i enjoy almost everything dylan, springsteen, and DK's thrice stuff which wouldn't fall under folky, but when it comes to categorizing a list of my favorites, folky stuff always makes the top of my list. There's a clear distinction between subjectively proclaiming you're not particularly fond of a band's music and objectively acknowledging just how cavalier and innovative said band was, despite your feelings for their music.

Every scene kid in existence has uttered the phrase "I like the Beatles, but they're sooooo overrated." I suppose this is to be expected from a dude who clearly prefers and finds an Early November album to be better than the Beatles or no album that predates 1997 on his list.

Every scene kid in existence has uttered the phrase "I like the Beatles, but they're sooooo overrated." I suppose this is to be expected from a dude who clearly prefers and finds an Early November album to be better than the Beatles or no album that predates 1997 on his list.

Keep on rolling you punk rawk superstar!

Immature humor only works if you can pull it off right. And very few people can do that extremely well.

I always thought Robin Williams should have a comic strip, even if he can't draw worth shit. Anything Robin Williams touches is awesome (except RV, which isn't that bad).

Are you fucking for real? So lists based on personal opinion must include artists who you (you) think have contributed something to music???

Is that what you're fucking saying? Goddam you're dumb. I think Michael Jackson and the Beach Boys and pedantic trash. Am I wrong cause everybody in Entertainment Weekly's Top 100 cd's of all time list them as an influence? Do I have to listen to band's that my favorite band's like in order to 'really' like them?

No, you're wrong because you can't look past your subjective feelings toward the albums to acknowledge why they receive the critical praise they do and what both The Beach Boys and Thriller did for music. You're, essentially, ignorant, and I'm assuming a kid, which makes sense. Educate yourself, slugger.

This is a favorite albums list, so it's entirely subjective, which is fine. However, saying "The Beatles are okay, but extremely overrated," which in itself is a stupid, faux-edgy statement, only to boldly list an album by the fucking Early November is absurd.

Oh and kid, throwing around the "f" word like you're a fucking gunslinger is pathetic, and as a gay man, you sicken me.

EDIT: Oh christ, you're 23. You are what's wrong with our generation.

Come onnnnnnnnnnn. You're saying (not even just implying) that I have to acknowledge the 'importance' of these pop acts who literally did nothing to music that avant-garde classical pioneers weren't doing at the exact same time. You're mad at someone for their slight of the Beatles, yet I hear no bitching about no one even knowing who Reich, and O'Rilley, and Glass are.

Once again, if I'm allowed to put any album I want on a list, then why are you arguing? It's cause you have a pre-set boundary of what can be counted in the 'canon' of best albums of all time. Oops.

Heyyyyyyyyy nowwwwwwwwwwww (what's the purpose of this, allstar). That's fine if people aren't aware of cats like Steve Reich, as they wasn't nearly as prominent as The Beatles, but nobodies bitching about them as a result or making asinine claims that they're "overrated" as a result. Believe me, if Philip Glass was as well known as Paul McCartney, there would be scene kids constantly claiming he's overrated as well, all the while raving about the latest Mayday Parade LP.

Once again, if I'm allowed to put any album I want on a list, then why are you arguing? It's cause you have a pre-set boundary of what can be counted in the 'canon' of best albums of all time. Oops.

Hey, I'm not saying you have to adhere to a certain standard for a subjective top five list. Shitty scene bands not withstanding. However, there's a level of irony that goes with someone who disregards the contributions of one of the most prolific and innovative bands in the history or Rock & Roll having such an affinity for shitty scenester music.

Oh Jesus - don't read the new interview with Gabe Saporta in Out

I suppose lists are somewhat limiting and difficult, especially for a listener who enjoys a variety of genres for a variety of reasons. After asking you the questioned, I tried to make my own list and had trouble ranking my favorites almost immediately. My musical tastes are still developing, with most of my favorites still resting within my lifespan, mostly within this decade; I tend to think such lists will become easier as my tastes develop, but perhaps it'll only become more difficult?

It's possible. The opposite was true with me. When I listened to a compartmentalized sect of the medium, it wasn't a daunting task to rank my favorite albums. When I began expanding beyond scene fare, and even Western music, it became all the more difficult, if for nothing else than the sheer volume of music I began listening to.

Well, if I'm this indecisive with ranking while my favorite bands rest rather comfortably within the scene and pop music, I doubt it'll become any easier as my tastes grow. Perhaps, after expanding enough, my tastes will come back together, and I'll be able to more easily zero in on what my favorites are.

I doubt the ability to create a top 5 is really that important, though.
