View Full Version : Basically, It's One of My Favorite Album Covers Ever

For those interested in knowing the meaning behind the cryptic Midtown (http://www.midtownrock.com) album cover, I recently asked Gabe why they set up the photo shoot the way they did. He had this to say: "I will only say that we came up with this entire concept and none of it was by accident. We didn't choose a photo. Everything has its signficance whether it's to express an idea or to invoke a visceral reaction. I hate explaining the meaning behind things because it is always bad. You take away what someone else might be getting from it, even if it's what you didn't intend (and true art has a life of its own that should be open for anyone)."
He also said that one of our visitors (Saint Joel) was quite close on some of the other meanings the photo was set up to represent. Basically, he wanted everyone to know it all has a meaning and wasn't picked randomly as some had implied.

Saint Joel is like some kind of legend.
Saint Joel is like some kind of legend.
Don't tell Wark that.
I would describe Saint Joel as wrestling's only living legend...

Okay... is this the album to "Give It Up" or to "Forget What You Know"?
And why isn't the "Forget What You Know" album in the multimedia section?

I wish he would explain it, becuase otherwise to me it's just some guy watching a tv. I am terrible at finding out meanings.
I am really not a fan of Gabe at this point, it's like he's trying to be too smart.

The cover looks exactly (save for a TV) like a shot in "Adaptation" where Nicholas Cage is eating dinner by himself at the dinner table, and the chair across from him, where his brother would normally be sitting, is empty. I wouldn't be an iota surprised to hear if it's where the cover derives from.

I am really not a fan of Gabe at this point, it's like he's trying to be too smart.I'm not a fan for the same reason and for the fact that he has quite the reputation of being not only an asshole but being all about the business side of music, point being I think the guy's a fucking joke, and oh yeah do they write their own songs now because I know for awhile they didn't

I think from a purely aesthetic standpoint the cover's a little bland.

Hey I should get some credit, Im the one who started the useless argument about how their cd cover didnt mean anything.
This whole band is takeing themselves way to seriously, My prediction is this is gonna be a boring rock album with a few entertaining instrumentals

There's definitely a theme of loneliness, of being down on your luck on the cover. I think it's fantastic. It's just a depressing cover...I take a little joy from watching some of my favorite tv shows at the end of the day with a bowl of cereal, but this guy just looks depressed. The album cover is brilliant. Maybe, it's just me, but the layout of it looks kind of the like the new Taking Back Sunday, same font, placement of the title and band name and such. Of course, I've never looked at both at the same time, so feel free to rile on me all you want at this point.

I am confused by this statement. You dislike people for appearing to be too smart? Therefore, by definition you would be more of a fan of Gabe, and like him better if he appeared to be stupid? Woah ... no wonder some people are still giving Bush approval points. This is the most confusing thing I have ever read.

Uhm, don't write there own songs? That's probably the most bullshit thing in the entire world, where would you get something like that? It's completely untrue.

and the only wrestler i ever lost to was the ultimate warrior...he was just too damn ultimate.
I noticed something about that cover I haven't seen brought up - the TV is not plugged in.
Can someone with an unbiased opinion please tell me if this album is good or not-everyone is either saying it's the best cd of the year, and others are saying it's overrated
it's not that he's too smart, but he's dipping his own damn opinions into areas that should not be touched such as voiding both science and religion. You don't do that, without a stated purpose and reason. All in all, he's vague.

i think the new cd is amazing, they definatly have a new sound, who cares what he is singing about. music is a way to express yourself to others and get everything out there. girls arent freaking out over tbs singing about slappen em around are they.
it's a simple matter of argument. he doesn't support his argument at all, and just says "think for yourself." It's capitolizing on a non-thought out process and series of ideas.
Forget what you know. Great idea. Not.

to make a case for me being unbiased, i think the other two midtown full lengths would have made better ep's because half the songs sound like poppy filler. that being said, i have to say i LOVE the new cd. they have really taken a step away from pop-punk, and just made a good record. i don't know if i would call it album of the year, but it is sure to be in the top 10.

I dont see why people are already labeling album of the year. The year isnt even half way over. mmmh just a thought. Lets put the album of the year shit away until the end of the year.
with that said, the new cd is ok. Not bad, not great, just depends on your tastes. Dont judge by what other people say just judge by what you hear yourself.

Theres no reason to bring Bush into this subject, thats pretty lame Tate. Look I don't care if you dislike Bush or even if you post crap about him all the time because it's your site. But that is pretty offensive to say that the people who approve of Bush are stupid. Right now i am working on recieving my master's in political science so I am pretty sure I've done my share of research and work on the subject but I still approve of Bush, does that make me stupid? Can't we agree to disagree here? Because it seems like you just like to assume that everyone who agrees with Bush is mentally retarded. I don't feel that way about you even though you disagree with my position, so why vice versa. Please respond.
besides tate, the guy you dissed (me) absolutely disagrees with Bush's actions and motivations. Though I do think his party sticks him up as a puppet in the forefront while they complete all the dirty work. Aproval ratings at this point either come from solid Republicans or Apathy.

The comment was obviously, a joke, and if it wasn't taken as one I have some glow in the dark sunglasses to sell you. It was a comment directed to question why you would find someone acting intellegently, to be a bad trait.

First, please show me how I said that those that approve of Bush are stupid. Those words were never used, I didn't say that - period. What I said was that I find it interesting and abysmal that someone appearing intellegent would be seen as a negative character trait. This is what was apparently happening to Gabe, and I was questioning the reasoning (I still haven't gotten one).
However, I do tend think those that approve of Bush's actions are likely doing so under the guise of:
1) Blind political party following.
2) Just un-Informed.
I don't think you are truly educated on some of the things this man has done in order to approve of his actions, mainly because I find some of them to be so degrading, and horrific, that I would assume others would as well. But, as a political science major - I would more than love to discuss this with you. I would be curious to see why you do approve of Bush. My reasons for disliking him reach well over a hundred, so it's probably better if you start.
For the sake of this debate, PLEASE don't use the common Limbaugh retorhic, because as you may have seen, I have already argued those points time and time again and I am not in the mood to rehash the same ground that I have dispelled before. (IE. Saddam did not present a clear and present danger to the United States)

Thats sounds good, unfortunately right now I am working on a 20 page paper regarding the health-care crisis, so is it alright if I e-mail you my reasons for why I approve of Bush in a day or so? I'd be glad to share ideas.
thanks
