he viewed it as me trying to push music onto him which pushed him even further into the direction of throwaway radio rock. of course, this was when he was 15 and in that typical teenage "fuck everything i'll do what i want" phase.

Deja Entendu of Tell All Your Friends.

Bob Dylan.

Yellowcard, You, Me, and Everyone We Know, or The Academy Is...

The Ergs!

Thanks guys. I figured most of the responses would be pop-punk related, but exposing her to another genre entirely (Dylan) might be a better idea. Hadn't thought of that.

She'd probably like any pop punk or pop rock bands you give her. So try out some Ergs, Movielife, Starting Line, Ben Folds, etc.

Maybe even some stuff like Pedro the Lion or Gaslight Anthem would work.

I don't like every band that I just mentioned, but ANYTHING is a step up from metro station.

just start her off with better pop-punk, thats the most likely route.

My personal recommendation would be Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want To Be because it's got radio-friendly songs and it could help transition to other pop-punk.

I have the exact same problem. I started introducing my brother to "scene" bands about a year ago and, for awhile, it was all good. Then, he started finding bands and his own. At first, it was fine (Ludo, Saves the Day) but then things got out of control (Cobra Starship, Treaty of Paris, Forever the Sickest Kids, and finally, Metro Station).

How about letting her be a kid and listen to shitty music like most 13 year olds do, and hopefully, through the visceral progression of age, she'll come around to good music as she nears adulthood.

Seriously, how many of you were listening to luminary works of music when you were 13?

My niece is 14. Her favorite bands are Paramore, Flyleaf and The Spill Canvas. Do you know why these are her favorite bands? It's primarily due to the fact she's a 14 year old.

I'm not implying there's anything wrong with trying to introduce her to good music, but (and this is anecdotal evidence, so take it as it is) in my experience, kids aren't mentally developed or sophisticated to want anything beyond fast, hook-heavy, infectious pop-music or music that has connotations to an image that's considered cool. You can give her a "gateway powerpop band," hope she digs it and then hold out hope that it'll lead her somehow to music beyond "the scene," but kids are kids and they listen to what they like.

Let her listen to Saves the Day - Stay What You Are. It's poppy and accessible, but also worthy and respectable.

Especially start with At Your Funeral. If that doesn't catch her attention I don't know what will. Also Nightingale and This Is Not An Exit.

Also, as people have stated try The Academy Is - Almost Here, The Matches - E Von Dahl, maybe even Cartel - Chroma.

First of all, how old is your sister? If she's young enough, it may just be a passing phase, or she may just be discovering music, at least that's my guess.

An alternative is to play similiar bands, or an even better solution - play bands that are a lot better, just as long as it's something that she'll actually like, so nothing to obscure. Other than that, that's about all I've got...

what's bad is there are people at my high school that love metro station and trace's ugly ass. =\ that LJ story is hilarious though. sad, but hilarious. "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM? Metro station? Billy Ray Cyrus? HANNAH MONTANNA?!"

also, I concur with people who said stuff like taking back sunday and brand new... that's how I got into better music. I'd also like to suggest alkaline trio, dunno if she'll be into it since it's a lot 'darker' so you might want to wait until later, but it won't take as long as some bands I'm sure.

Haha that's not much of a step up.
i heartily disagree. especially if she's into that genre, FTSK's a pretty solid band. the song writing itself is better, and more creative. (this is all as far as power pop goes.) the musicianship is better, simply due to the fact that FTSK doesn't use nearly as much effects as Metro Station. even the lyrics aren't quite as horrible.

but again, i'm not saying FTSK is the most original band out there, but within the modern power-pop scene, i'm pretty sure they're a step up from Metro Station.

I'm going to regret saying this, but I used to like them. I mean they're weren't too bad, but they aren't very good. Same with All Time Low.

ah well to each his own.

Thats how it was with me and All Time Low.
like i was a die-hard, super friggin fan. but then i just kinda changed and listened to music for substance. and they dont have that much of it.
i still love those guys to death, i just dont listen to SW,IR anymore.

Why don't you let her figure out her own musical likes/dislikes for herself instead of plotting to sabotage her Ipod or whatever you were planning on doing? The way I see it (and this is me being selfish), the fewer youngins listening to the music I like = less of them to deal with at concerts

Exactly, I'm 13 and I would much rather my little brother be listening to The Police, Blake Lewis, Nickelback and Batman soundtracks than Anberlin, Death Cab and BFMV. It would not be fun having to take him to an Anberlin concert or have him running around singing my favorite songs.

why do people think that 14 year olds always listen to "bad" music?
i understand if it's a 14 year old teenie, who likes bands because the members are hot and the band is cool. i dont like them either.

but, some 14 year olds have, you know, maturity and listen to "not cool" bands.
i'm not necessarily saying it's ME, because i dont consider myself a mature person, at all, but assumptions like that are pretty stupid.

there are 14 year olds out there that might listen to good music, or want to listen to good music, but its almost like peopel are saying "oh, you're 14. listen to bad music, you're supposed to. save the good stuff for us."
