MELEE
TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ‘EVERYDAY BEHAVIOR’
JUNE 29 ON SUB CITY RECORDS
BAND CONFIRMS VANS WARPED TOUR RUN THIS SUMMER
RECORD RELEASE SHOW CONFIRMED FOR JUNE 21;
AT CHAIN REACTION IN ANAHEIM
Orange County, CA foursome MELEE will release their debut album EVERYDAY BEHAVIOR June 29 on Sub City Records in connection with their return to the Vans Warped Tour this summer. MELEE--CHRIS CRON (vocals, keyboards, guitar), RICK SANBERG (guitar, keyboards), RYAN MALLOY (bass, vocals) and MIKE NADER (drums)--will celebrate their CD release June 21 in front of a packed house at Chain Reaction in Anaheim before hitting the road on the Vans Warped Tour for the entire length of the tour.
Co-produced by MELEE (pronounced maylay) and Jawbox frontman and veteran indie-rock producer J. Robbins (Jets To Brazil, The Promise Ring), EVERYDAY BEHAVIOR is not the sort of record you’d expect to hear from the Hopeless/Sub City roster, the labels that launched the successful careers of such punk greats as Thrice and Avenged Sevenfold. Instead, MELEE's music is a diverse amalgamation that showcases the band’s varied pop influences ranging from The Beatles and the Beach Boys to Pizzicato Five and The Police. MELEE seamlessly merge the indie-rock sound with pop sensibilities that will strike a chord with not only the Hopeless/Sub City Records punk-based crowd, but will also extend outwards to fans of Rooney, Maroon 5 and Michelle Branch.
Filled with piano-based rhythms and one irresistible hook after another, EVERYDAY BEHAVIOR reflects the group's experiences up to this point. Frontman CHRIS CRON outlines the band’s thought process behind the album title, “While mulling over idea's for album titles, we kept asking ourselves what the general theme of the album was. It was hard to pinpoint, since each song dealt with a different problem. Yes, we have the forlorn love song, but they are not all on that subject. It turned out that the album was more of a conglomeration of our past 21 years of experience, and how we have dealt with them. Hence, everyday behavior; which may seem mundane and repetitive, but is actually full of the excitement that is human history.”
The group’s sophisticated compositions, harmonies and subtly poignant lyricism resonate well beyond their years, as evidenced by the closing verse of the first single “The War” (“And all that time we walk the line through pain and giving in to you/But now it’s gone so we’ll move on and know that this is not the end/On this simple night when we’ve all lost our sight, You believed in what I said/From the cursed beginnings to the blessed endings, In between we’ve found our way to live”).
Formed in 1999 while still in their teens (the band members' ages range from 17-21), the group steadily performed throughout Orange County and adopted a loyal fanbase via their inspired live performances. The band signed with Sub City Records in March of 2003 and released the Against The Tide EP. Sub City Records was created by Hopeless Records to raise funds and awareness for non-profit organizations. Signing to Sub City Records was a given for MELEE; after substantial research the band chose to donate a portion of the proceeds from EVERYDAY BEHAVIOR to the Orangewood PALS Program--an organization committed to fight child abuse and neglect--based in the band’s own community of Orange County, CA. In addition to donating money equaling 5% of the suggested retail list price earned by the band and Sub City Records, MELEE plans to volunteer their free time at the children’s home assisting the staff and mentoring the kids.
MELEE’s songs will also appear on four compilations set for release in 2004. “The War” will first be released on the Vans Warped Tour 2004 compilation out on June 8 (SideOneDummy), while “New Day” and “Francesca” will appear on the popular Hopeless Devoted to You Vol. 5 series out on Hopeless Records. In addition, “New Day” will be included on an upcoming ASCAP sampler and a piano version of “The War” will be added to a forthcoming Vagrant Records compilation. Stay tuned for release dates and more details.
