willie, an absolute legend of music & there's definitely a reason for such acclaim. despite being based in country, he can do it all with tremendous brilliance. for starters, it was his '05 reggae album countryman that actually got me into him haha. but i've since become a big fan of much of his work

once again 2008 delivers another delightful surprise, with willie's latest live album with modern jazz trumpet hero wynton marsalis, titled two men with the blues. i only picked this up on a whim today, when i saw these two greats on one album, the decision was easy. turns out i made a great choice since this has to be one of the greatest live recordings i've come across, it's phenomenal. two magnificent musicians working in near perfect harmony throughout a string of new orleans jazz tinged blues-ballads. the two men (backed by a 5-piece band) calmly exchange the spot light with one another, gently twisting these great songs into their own, full of yearning & beauty. on paper this jam session probably shouldn't have worked. but somehow it defies all odds, what a stunner

any fans, share some love & discussion?

Never completely got into him but Phases And Stages (my personal favorite) and Red Headed Stranger are probably my top Willie releases.

I really never bothered to try to get into him.. but now thinking I should since you are reccing him Craig haha. I thought he died years ago, though. Couldn't believe he was in Beerfest.

I will embarrassingly admit that I got into Willie Nelson after hearing Andy Hull from Manchester Orchestra cover the "The Party's Over", good stuff.

both great albums. i think his latest could be your thing, are you a wynton marsalis fan? it's as much wynton as it is willie. very jazzy, very nice

haha he's alive & well & his vocals are sounding better than ever! his reggae album countryman features toots on a couple songs. got me into willie, it might work for you too? haha. people don't seem to realize, he's done sooo much more than country music, he covers everything somewhere along the line

Big Marsalis fan. He's dropped by the jazzfest here a few times so I've been fortunate enough to see him and I highly recommend you do so if he ever comes near you. Can't say I even knew about his collaboration with Willie though. Something I'll definitely look into.

As a band... they're pretty much a watered down version of Built to Spill, though there debut album as two tracks that I am still really into. However, their lead singer, Andy Hull, has a bright future ahead of him, I think he's either 20 or 21, and has already done some great stuff solo. His Nelson cover (which incorporates a Mountain Goats song as well) is chilling, and he's got the lyrical and vocal talent to go places. I'm not sure the band will ever do anything incredible, but he's got too much talent not to do something big some day. Also one of the nicest guys I've met.

soo good. i'm always a little surprised that this is often peoples favourite album from big willie. it's not his most accessible, with it's often brief & jumbled ways. was also somewhat of a concept album. but i'm with ya mate... i love it too haha

didn't know you were a willie fan? nice

straight up? didn't pick you as a sort of jazz/country/blues fusion type of fella. but even so, i think you might enjoy this album. if the harmonica in the opening tune "bright lights big city" can't get you doing the boogie woogie... something's wrong haha

it looks and sounds awesome. :-)

i've never really listened to jazz/country, etc. that much, but i'm looking to change that and get into em now.

Hahahah, no. When he was really young, I showed him one of my dad's Willie records with a picture of him on the front. I told him that that's what he'll grow up to look like. He cried.

as cute as you

haha eh, I wasn't really saying it was my favorite, was more of a refrence to him as the Red Headed Stranger. I dunno, haha. but yeah, either way I really like the album.

and yeah, I've been a fan for a while, I just really never noticed this thread before. was listening to him earlier and decided to see if there was a thread.

glad you enjoyed it mate. it's just soo good & was recorded more or less by accident. the boys apparently just got together for a jam one night, let whatever audience that wanted to turn up. certainly wasn't planned as an album, but it just sounded soo good, they decided to release it

around the time you made this thread talking about two men with the blues, vinyl collective put that double lp album in it's store - perfect timing. i plan on ordering that sometime.

Fun fact: When they're in the record store, a copy of Hard Rock Bottom is visible on the shelf behind Monk's head. Neato! haha.

I like the scene at the end where Monk and Willie are playing Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain at Trudy's grave. It's sweet/sad.

Just heard Red Headed Stranger. My first Willie album. I was really, really into it. The sparseness of those arrangements is a great way to get into his voice.

Man, Stardust is spectacular. He's such an incredible interpretive singer. I know every single one of these songs, and have never felt connected to them like I do when Willie sings them.

His cover of "Unchained Melody" in particular is fucking revelatory.

His version of "Georgia On My Mind" is better than Ray Charles', I think, and that's saying a lot.
