Six Feet Under and The Wire. Get both first seasons. Beware though - the wire builds like a long book - slowly. Comedy wise? Eastbound, Summer Heights High, the first couple of seasons of Entourage were good (show is pretty damn awful now). I'd say start with Six Feet Under though. That one I think anyone could enjoy. Perhaps the greatest series finale of any television show ever too.

I absolutely love Big Love, season 4 was outrageous but it's still pretty good and this is it's last season so I guess it was allowed to be over the top, and I watched Band of Brothers all in one day. Maybe it's just that I like war shows but I enjoyed Generation Kill.

The Wire is far and away the best (read: my favorite) television show of all time. Its the most fulfilling and in depth series that I've ever watched. I think everyone should watch it all the way through at least once.
