I normally type like I would in a school report or something (except for the smiley faces or something). It's just what I always have done and it feels more natural to me than typing lYk d1s.

That would take so much longer than to just type normally.

I refuse to hand in a term paper that doesn't at least have a couple of smileys, maybe a cute little lulz thrown in somewhere

I guess if you do the l337 sp33k, you'd get used to it and be able to do it faster. That's just not an interest of mine, though.

When my class had to do peer editing, some papers actually said "gr8" and "lol". That and the there/their/they're thing.

I hate it when people can't type correctly, it's way easier to just use proper grammar, and much more easy to read.

I hate it when people go on about spelling and grammer, I mean have you ever heard of 'short-hand' used by journalist etc... to take down notes quickly, but when young people form their own version it's suddenly the death of intelligence

please note that journalists know how to correctly translate their shorthand into "proper" english. when people now do not know the difference between there/their/they're, your/you're that's not shorthand, thats a lack of understanding ENGLISH on a fundamental level. i'm not a huge grammar nazi but really there are just some things that are sad. dont try to defend the 14 year olds that think they should receive an A on a paper because they write like they speak.
Yesterday while I was smoking a cigarette on my break, it dawned on me, that we're currently in a period of time that is changing the language. Cell phones and instant messanging has provided a perfect way to actually change an entire language. I hear people using instant messanging abbreviations in everyday conversation. I wonder if this will get worse and we're actually seeing the beginning of another language that will continue to develop over hundreds of years. It's interesting to think about.

Grammar is indeed important but let's not blow this entirely out of proportion. What matter is what you say, assuming one is issuing something of importance and relevance. If you are one of many who constantly corrects other people, think before you utter something in haste. It is indeed easier to correct than to be corrected and be correct initially. The one doing the correcting has got more time to scrutinize the sentences, grammatically and choice of words by definition. If your agenda is to simply hassle people and get on their nerves, do continue but be warned. If one makes grammatical faults in haste, one shouldn't be punished for everyone, except people with manuscripts, makes mistakes. This does not necessarily have to do anything with intelligence or vocabulary et cetera so I urge you, please act like it's not.

It's not just that but typing lYk d1s, spelling the words wrong on purpose and adding a few numbers in for fun, that I find annoying and hard to read. Sometimes when I'm IMing I'll say "brb" or "idk" though.

Furthermore, proper shorthand is another language on its own, not some scribble or random abbreviations.
You're/your
Their/there/they're
Not that hard!
I'll admit, improper grammar irks me... but I try to rationalize that at the end of the day it really doesn't mean much (except a failing educational system in our country). I know plenty of good hearted people who are great to be around that can't make any of the above distinctions.

Gonna be honest and say I really have never met anyone who can not tell the difference between to,too/there, their etc.. but then again it doesn't come up very often.

i will admit to a brief period in my life when i was 11-12 and spelled things differently because i thought it was cool... but i got over it real fast. which is what i'm hoping will happen to the generation of 14 yr olds that tYpE lyk d1s... abbreviations are useful and i will use brb idk lol, but not when i email my boss or professors.
but you would be surprised at the vast number of people that confuse you're/your there/their/they're to/too. my dad (who's pretty intelligent) has me proofread his letters sometimes and is generally ok but every once in while i have to fix it. my mom (God help her) cannot spell. (we have a coffee can in the garage that is labeled "seads"), which extends to her grammar when using homonyms. my boss also has me proofread his emails, and hes a really smart guy (sr. engineer). and i've been on craigslist a lot lately searching for housing/furniture/roommate, and that just another story entirely...

I've written a few e-mails over the years to teachers I had in elementary, middle, and even high school, and was extremely surprised to see a lot of them say "lol" and "omg", etc. I only type like that when it's really late and I'm tired or lazy.

see, i get the whole text/internet language thing. that's fine, but it's like using a calculator. they're great if you know how to do the stuff manually. syntax, punctuation, stuff like that. i get people not being able to spell words. life isn't a constant spelling bee. homonyms: totally get that. as long as we get the general idea, right? but what irks me is the general lack of knowledge. funny that the people that comment here about not caring are usually the ones with decent grammatical skills.

That is absurd.
The non-word, "irregardless" annoys me.
...and, "A whole 'nother."
These aren't grammar mistakes, I suppose. They just piss me off.

it's not that shorthand is the death of intelligence; it's just that it's really annoying. grammatical/spelling errors have nothing to do with shorthand though. for example, if you say "omg, i hope my favorite team doesn't loose the game!" you're making a mistake, and you're typing more letters than you need! grammatical/spelling errors are just wrong and should be avoided and corrected. shorthand is fine, i guess.
by the way, i don't capitalize anything when i write in forums. that doesn't make me a hypocrite or anything :| .

"A whole 'nother" IS a grammar mistake. What is a "nother" anyway?

It's a little bit less common in English than it is in French, but I hate it when people say "It's more worse." There is nothing worse than worse.
Also, people who confuse their than and then. Apparently they're interchangeable now.
