Anyone in college/graduated have a dog?
I want one, but i'm not sure if it's a great idea. I'm a senior in college (hopefully only one more year left) and the house i'm renting next year will be large enough but i'm worried about after that. Is finding a place that will allow large dogs difficult? (i want another Irish Wolfhound, the dog i got in first grade died recently, so I'm talking about something that is between the size of a Retriever and a Great Dane)
also i'm smart enough to know that i do not have the time for a little puppy, so i was thinking about one that is 7 months or so, or rescuing an older dog... with the older dog I'm worried that we won't bond... anyone have any experience with any of this?

Just go with a cat haha. Just as rewarding/fun and nowhere near as much work as it would take to take care of a wolfhound!

Cats, to me, just aren't affectionate enough. It's just something about them. A cat stole my hot dog from me at a cookout once when I was like five, ever since then, hated them.

Dogs: Have to be fed, shit in the house, shit in the yard, smel like shit, lick stranger's nuts, are big and obnoxious, cost more to maintain, bite

Cats: Have to be fed, spray everything, meow incessantly and can't be trained to stop, don't give a shit about you, can claw you, have to be declawed so they don't claw you, can't do tricks

Please try and adopting from shelters instead of going to breeders.

Breeders and pet stores are a no go. Adopt from a rescue league.

if you seriously want an older dog, check out the shelters/humane society first. i went to the animal shelter last week and all they had were older dogs and kittens. i was sad that i couldn't take them all home.

i literally lol'ed with my friend for like 5 minutes... sorry for your psychological damage?
I was definitely going adopt from a shelter or rescue... i've been looking them up while bored at work. there's a lot but most are like 3 states away (at least)... and i'm worried they wont give me one becaue i'm a student and renting a house... and yes i was going to walk it... it'll be good exercise for both of us.
Cats have way more personality & are cozier.

1. All animals have to be fed.
2. They don't spray if they're neutered.
3. Basically only 1 of my four cats ever meows, and it's not incessantly.
4. Meowing isn't anywhere nearly as annoying as barking.
5. Our cats love us.
6. Claws are not that big a deal. They're just something you deal with, unless the cat is smart enough to use its claws only when necessary.
7. Not all cats have to be declawed...we have only declawed one cat, and I have no idea why we did, as she was the sweetest thing in the world.
8. Tricks aren't a prerequisite for human affection.

this wasnt supposed to be a cat vs. dog debate. i love animals (with a few exceptions, like poultry). i have 3 cats, 2 horses, and recently my mom picked up 3 kittens, and a barn cat wandered up so we're keeping her as well. soooo... back to my question...
how is it finding places that will take large animals? adopting older animals? in general, how is having a pet in college, and more importantly once you graduate and start moving around etc... =)

eh i totally wouldn't say cats are just as rewarding/fun. they're cute when they're kittens but when they grow up, they're pretty boring. personally, i love dogs.

I have 2 dogs and can tell you that renting a house with a fenced yard will always cost you more and will be harder to find. I love my dogs but they are a huge amount of work and I know that I ignored everyone telling me that before I got them. With cats, you can go out of town for the weekend and not really worry about them, with dogs, you always have to have someone watch them or take them to a kennel which can get expensive. Depending on the size of the dog you get, you're going to be spending a lot of money on dog food. I've got an Old English Sheepdog and a Shiba Inu mix (90 lbs and 45 lbs, respectively) that go through a 40 lb bag of dog food every 2 weeks - the food I get is $36 a bag (nearly $1000/year spent on dog food alone), not to mention all the toys they need. Plus there's the groomers that they go to a few times a year, that's around $100 each time. This stuff adds up quick. I would wait for a few years if I were you before you get dogs.
