I will bet you anything that due to disappointing sales of the "different" Santi, the label pressured this band to make their sound more marketable like that of their peers.

Take a look at that Cobra Starship-like album cover; the single is boring, overdubbed pop.

This band had a better idea going with Santi: heavier, edgier and now this? Eh, no thanks.

lol at all of the people that are bitching at these guys for "selling out" and making pop tunes again. Hello? They always did. Santi didn't have balls, it didn't have grit, it was a pop record. Maybe a little more rock than their first one but it was still just as accessible and mainstream-sounding as their first.

There's a substantial difference between what they did on the first two albums and where they are going now. It's clear that the band has bought into label pressure here and has had to water down their already-accessible sound to sell records. The album cover with female legs on it; the neon font; the producers who have written half the FBR hit-list - The Academy Is was never a pop band in the way many FBR bands have made themselves out to be. They had more gusto on the previous efforts and instead of building upon the rawer and intensive sound Santi was going for, they've destroyed it all to break through into the TRL circuit.

Praetor
07/23/08, 08:50 AM
I guess I just don't really hear the rawness on Santi. I mean, it was the album to make them big, anyway (Big Mess On Our Hands was really well-received by the mainstream). And I guess I just don't see how a pop band that signs to FBR can ever really sell out - they've always wanted to make hits, as much gusto as you think that Almost Here and Santi have, it was clear that the goal was to make hits.

ThisIsNotDan
07/23/08, 09:49 AM
I'm gonna have to agree with Chris on this one. yeah, they were a pop band, but they weren't the CIWWAF-esque crap that all the kids love nowadays. they had a little more, and Santi actually showed a bit of experimentation with their sound as well. their fans weren't digging it, and now they sound like Boys Like Girls/etc

for santi they did have a different sound but i think maybe they tried to hard to make it that way.. and it actualy became more mainstream.

Santi actually wasn't popular at all - that's why Atlantic has obviously rode the band's ass into watering down their sound. Butch Walker produced Santi and gave it's production a less-polished feel (listen to "Bulls In Brooklyn" and "Same Blood"), and the single did alright on Fuse but attempts at capturing the TRL audience failed.

The reason TAI has always been a tad different is because while they've always been a band out to make hits (what melody-driven band isn't?), they didn't have a Boys Like Girls/Cobra Starship/Hellogoodbye sound that spoke down to their audience. By hiring the producers who worked on Fast Times, they have completely gone that way with their sound - which is sad, but understandable in order for them to remain relevant. FBR/Atlantic have dumped a lot of money into them and need to see it pay off.

What Lagwagon album(s) should I start with?

Bad Astronaut - 12 Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment

For a taste of the Caper's solo stuff: Joey Cape and Tony Sly - Acoustic (tracks 7-12, at least).

Well, knowing your taste in music you might like Bad Astronaut more, but I dunno. If you check em both out, for BA look into Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment and for Lagwagon I think that Resolve and Blaze are their two best/most accessible.
