View Full Version : My puppy died

He got Parvovirus (which is, apparently, some sort of doggy AIDS or something). My family is poor as dirt so we couldn't afford to cure it or even to treat it. Best part is, we couldn't even afford to put him down or bury him. So I drove the poor guy out to the country, took his collar off, and drove away. My last image of him was him trying to hold in his vomit while looking at me sadly.
Then, "My Immortal" by Evanescence came on the radio.

The vet said he's had the parvovirus for about seven days. If we had caught onto what it was earlier, he may have had a chance but his organs were already starting to fail. Parvo only lasts in a dog for about 7-10 days. If we had caught it just one day earlier, we wouldn't even need medical care to help him survive it (just a lot of sugar water, according to the stuff I'm reading about it now).

Isn't that the disease that if your dog gets it they tell you not to have another dog in the house for two years, because any other dog you bring in could catch it and die, too?

Yup. I've got another dog in the house but he's no where near where the other one was and he's a lot older so he should be OK. Here's a picture of my little Casey...

Well, our choices were bringing him back into our house with out other dog and letting him die in the house or letting him die in the woods. He's not going to infect other dogs (not house dogs anyway) because he's definitely dead by now. We really couldn't afford to put the poor guy down.

Dirt cheap is still too much when you're dirt poor. I wish we'd been able to afford to put him down or make him well, etc. but it wasn't even an option for us right now.

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog but couldn't you have brought him to the shelter or SPCA for them to put him to sleep? It seems a little fucked up to just leave it to die in the country somewhere alone.
Dogs are a big responsibility. If you can't afford to care for them, you shouldn't have them.

You've got internet and gas in your car, but a living creature that's "your best friend" deserves to die alone and scared.

Just leave him alone. I'm sure he didn't want to leave his dog to pass anymore than any of you do, but it was a decision he was forced to make. Shit happens in life and all that you need to do is to learn from your mistakes and move on. I'm sorry that you lost your dog, just keep your chin up and remember the good times.

There are places that you could have taken your dog where they would have put him down for you. Leaving a dog in the country like that is pretty shitty. Now he was starving, thirsty and dehydrated on top of dying from a disease. You should have done research on how to get it taken care of if you don't have the money to do so.

why are you telling me to shut the fuck up?
I have cats, I love my cats more than any of my friends.
If any of them got cancer, I wouldn't just throw them in the woods to die painfully.
I would do the right thing and put my pets that I love down so they won't have to suffer as much.
Money should not be a issue for something like this, because it really isn't.
I have only had to loose one of my cats in my life time, and that was really hard for me to get past, but never would I just put it in the woods, because I loved it.

Where are all these goddamn places you guys are talking about? Fuck, name them. I live in the tiniest fucking town (my location here says Charlotte but I don't live there yet). My dog had a couple of hours to live. My options are 1) take him back home and let him die and suffer in front of my sisters or 2) take him out to the woods.

The internet costs $30 a month. It's an expected bill that I prepare for every month. Keeping my dog alive would've cost $200 a night for hospitalization and $75 to put him down. We already had to pay $104 of borrowed money (which my mom had borrowed from my uncle so she could take me to orientation next week) just to get to the vet to see him since we didn't have an appointment.

Money is definitely a fucking issue when you have $0, dumbass. If you think it's a good idea to let a dog die while puking infected fluids in a house where there's another dog in front of two girls who loved him to death, than that's good for you. I loved my dog so much but it came down to who was going to have to suffer so I chose to let my family off the hook. I don't understand what's so hard to get about that.

I can't stress enough that if I had the ability, I would do anything to save my dog but there was nothing I could do with zero dollars. what makes taking a terminally ill animal out to the woods and ditching it so it can continue to suffer until it dies cold and alone and finally gets picked apart by scavengers better then killing it as quickly and painlessly as possible and giving it a decent fucking burial?

That's like saying you can't afford to have children if you don't have $200 on the day they randomly break their arm. If my dog had gotten sick right after payday or when we had some money, we would've paid for it in a second but unfortunately, no one had any money and we were not expecting the poor guy to go from happy, hopping puppy to near death in two-three days time.

no, i'm saying anyone who's unable to get over a little discomfort in order to do the right thing for thier pet shouldn't have one.
So yes, you're insinuating anyone who can't physically kill their own dog shouldn't have one. Don't try to re-word what you're saying to try and make it sound more acceptable.

if you were dirt poor, then how could you afford a dog?
$10 a week for dog food is doable. Planned expenses (annual vet trips, shots, etc.) can be managed. Suddenly needing $75 is not. Again, there's a gross misunderstanding of what exactly poverty is.

It's obvious you don't understand poverty. I'll chalk that up to ignorance.
If I don't have $200 on me at all times and don't have the balls to snap a dog's neck, I shouldn't be allowed to have one. Sure, whatever.
I admit, I don't have the balls to snap a dog's neck. I seriously doubt there are many people that do. If that means none of them deserve dog's, fine.
its obvious i do. i was poor more than half my life... dirt poor. and we didn't have any pets because we didnt have the funds to take care of them. once my parents got good jobs and started making a good living. we got a dog, that we took care of.

don't deflect the issue here........you're a fucking asshole for not taking the best possible course of action for your dog because you couldn't deal with a little of your own discomfort.
in some instances the best thing to do is put your dog out of it's misery as quickly and as painlessly as possible by taking them to the vet and letting them do it........in an a smaller number of cases the pet owner may have to do it themselves because they can't afford the services of a vet..........in an ever greater minority of cases that person doesn't have a gun........but that doesn't suddenly make it ok to take an irrational, inhumane, and irresponsible course of action, you fucking do the best you humanly can........and you clearly didn't.

I don't know how much experience you have with snapping animals necks, but I have exactly none. So, I wouldn't be able to do it quickly and it would probably take me quite a few tries. My serious options:

3. Snap his neck or some other form of quickly killing him myself (you saying I could've found someone else to do it is moronic. I don't know anyone who would kill a dog with their bare hands... especially on such short notice).

You're one of those people who, when arguing, are so sure that they're right that they refuse to even consider that the other person could be right. And now you're going to say "I'd listen to him if he had a point." But you're not listening to him. He's been saying all along that, given the time span, he couldn't find someone to snap his dog's neck. And it's perfectly understandable not to snap your dog's neck. You're the only person I've ever heard say they could do it. Yes, the dog's death was painful and miserable, and that sucks. You've made your point and stressed it quite enough. What's your motive for continuing to pick on the guy who just had to make up his mind and leave his puppy behind to die alone? If you don't agree, leave. It's obvious you're not going to get him to agree with you.
i don't accept bullshit as a valid argument if that's what you mean.
huh? when did i say anything like that?
my motive is not wanting to see this fucked up chain of events repeat itself.

ok.
1. if you just lost a loved one, why are you trying to prove that you got rid of it the right way over the internet? I just don't get that.
2. I do agree with you, I would not be able to snap my own pet's neck either, but what you did was not right in any way.
3. there are other ways, there are plenty of house products that could put a dog to sleep faster than dumping him in the woods, it doesn't need to be as extreme as shooting it or snapping it's neck.
I'm such a jackass. Someone should anal me to death.

Probably because the person who's attacking him is online. If someone told me I was an asshole for not snapping my dog's neck, I'd fight back. You're right about it not needing to be as extreme, though, but the guy was really distressed. I never would've thought of a garden hose and my car when my cat was dying.

Sorry if I sound out of line here, but. IT'S THE INTERNET.
I understand how it can be a way to escape reality and get your mind off things, that's what blogs are for, not public forums.
I would have thought of a way like a hose and car, because I would have been thinking of the best way for my cat to pass away.
In fact, 2 years ago I almost had to do it until a kind doctor took him in for free as credited towards an "experiment".

Best part is, we couldn't even afford to put him down or bury him. So I drove the poor guy out to the country, took his collar off, and drove away. Losing a dog is one of the most painful things someone has to go through. I'm sorry for your loss, but why didn't you allow him to die inside your house, where he was safe and protected and in familiar surroundings? I think it is cruel that you made him die alone and confused. Sure, you couldn't afford to put him to sleep or get him buried, so why not let him die in the safety of your own house and then bury him yourself. I'm pretty sure a shovel does not cost that much...

1. I agree with the few people that said, "if you don't have the income for a dog (or any pet), you shouldn't have one."
2. On the other hand, it's fucking insane that people are actually saying you should have killed him yourself. I couldn't do that. I couldn't even go with to have my cat put down, I was too sad. I understand #1 but like I said before, we didn't have the $75 to put him down at the time. We were lucky enough to have the $104 it costs for the vet to see him without an appointment. Again, I can accept that what my family and I chose to do was not the best thing.

you yourself admitted that snapping your dogs neck would have been a better death........and then said you couldn't do that.
this is about doing the best you can for your pet in all instances. for most people it's having a vet give them an injection that kills them.........you didn't have the money for that, and that sucks, i can sympathize.........you don't have a gun, and not everyone does..........what's the next best thing to do? kill him quickly with your bare hands or take him out to the woods, ditch him to die slowly and alone, and finally be picked apart by disease spreading scavengers?
i can sympathize with alot and excuse just as much but what i can't sympathize or excuse is you knowingly choosing to prolong the suffering of your dog simply because you want to avoid some discomfort on your part.
I'm reading through this thread and I must say that I disagree with nearly everything you're saying. The most annoying part, though, is your terrible grammar. When you use ellipses, you only put THREE dots, not six or seven, as you seem to do. Also, "your" and "you're" are not the same thing.

My dog never lived outside. He lived comfortably inside, ate twice a day, had all his shots, and was played with constantly. A day before payday, no one was expecting to have to spend so much money and no one had it. Again, if I could go back and do it again, I probably would've done something different. Pathetic... here you are telling people they're ignorant to the true nature of poverty while you sit here and post about it on the internet. It's quite obvious you're the ignorant one. Regardless of "planned expenses", there is no excuse for owning two dogs when you can't afford to take care of them. Owning a dog is not just buying it food, giving it water and attention, and sheltering it. At 18 you should know that there are going to be problems with animals, and should have something to fall back on. So instead of looking for sympathy on the internet, you should try even harder to make sure something like this doesn't happen to your other dog. I'm in no position to tell you what you did was wrong, but there were definitely other options.

He said he could afford to take care of them. You've clearly never worked- when you get a paycheck, especially if you don't get paid much, you already know what you're going to spend it on. He clearly had enough to take care of the dog. It was just something terrible that happened. Like if you get in a car crash the day before you get paid. You won't have the money to fix your car. Does that mean that you shouldn't own a car because you can't take care of it? No, it means that life goes on- it isn't something you could expect.

What a fucking shitty thing to do. And then post about it on here? What, did you expect sympathy? There's places you could have brought him that wouldn't have cost you anything, and you could have kept him in your backyard or something better than throwing him in the woods to die alone you piece of shit.

one time this kid that i know made an ass of himself by taking a bunch of xanax and shooting up 4 bags of heroin started talking about his dog that died.

Uhh, isn't releasing him into the country putting other dogs at risk for catching it?
agreed... I think by releasing him into the wild you have prob infected hundreds of others.
Well done.
Yes. And?

I'm pretty sure I vomitted in my mouth after reading through this thread.. Some people on AP are fucking dicks.
Sorry for your loss dude. This made me pretty teary-eyed so I can't even imagine how your family has been coping.
