Hey guys,
I plan on building my own guitar with my dad. If any of you guys have built one before, mind telling me how long it took, money spent, etc.
Thanks!
Here's what it's going to look like. (the shape of the body, look down further to see what color I want it)

any idea what woods you're going to use, or what pickups you want? and are you sure you need three humbuckers?
theguy77
07/21/08, 02:10 PM
yeah ive always thought the idea of 3 humbuckers was stupid. and if i were you i'd actually put a single coil in the neck -- neck humbuckers sound way too thick and swallow themselves, at least with the amplification ive paired it with, the telecaster single coil sounds so much better for like blues. but this is all my own preference i mean build it to match your fancy.

Ash wood for the body, maple neck.
And the three humbuckers was really just for looks, the final product won't have three.
I'm not sure exactly what pickups I want, I know I want a pickup thats usually found in a strat, and the other one you would find in an SG. Any recommendations?

Yeah it was just for looks, I totally agree three pickups is a bit over the top.
I'll look into what you said, you make a good point, thanks.
O and I decided for the paint job I'm going to do a sunburst with a white pickguard.

You should look for something with 4 leads, so you can coiltap it. So at one setting it will sound like an SG humbucker and the other setting will sound like strat/tele single coils.

All kinds, but mainly alternative and pop/punk, I also like to play metal just for fun too.
does that new drawing have 2 humbuckers and one single-coil?
My bad, that's just a bridge.
You'd probably be fine with just 2 humbuckers, that should do you fine.

Guitarfetish.com has everything you need at really low prices, and the quality is amazing.

Pots are part of the electronics in the guitar, the jack is where you plug the cable into your guitar, resistors are also part of the electronics, as are capacitors.

The tailpiece is the part behind the bridge that holds the strings. The pots are the electronic part for the tone/volume knobs, the jack is where you plug in the cable, the resistors and capacitors are electronic components used for voicing the tone/volume controls.

I was wondering the same thing... the feel of a neck is a huge part of the guitar, and squier is really hit or miss on that.

Hah. Exactly why I asked - and with spending only $300 total for supplies... I think someone might've cheaped out on a very important part.
Luckily, it's bolt-on, so it's upgradable, I suppose.

Yeah. Frets, especially. Tuners and nut can be swapped very easily. Get a fretjob and you might as well have just gotten the nicer neck.
Although, if its a Squier Affinity Neck, I hear those are actually really nice. I haven't played one though.

I know what you mean. Some of them are just too thin. But I own an Ibanez SZ, and it's got a nice sized neck. Like something a gibson would have. The Ibanez RG is the one with the deathly thin neck. I think the S series as well

I'll have another update tomorrow! Hopefully the cavities will be done, the back of the neck pocket will be worked on, and the pick up cavities should be done.
After that I'l be rounding the body, putting in the tummy curve on the back, putting in the holes for the strings, and getting all the holes for the hardware in.
Then I'll put the finishing touches on it and start painting!

Just seems a bit "uneven" for my fit, personally. Make the contour of the curves a little smoother, make the tele-part not jut out as much, and likewise, possibly extend the horn a bit. I don't know, it seems quite literally two seperate bodies put together (Tele and SG) as opposed to one which will stand on its own...
I think the tele part is just a little too far out, it should go "up" more than "across", if that makes sense... Maybe a picture will help.
http://www.vintageguitarbuyer.com/a%201958%20telecaster.jpg
My design would either make your tele-part look more like that, or else extend the horn a bit and make it "beefier" almost.
It's tough to explain cutting wood. I like your design though, it's very nice, and I'm sure it will look fantastic when finished. What paint scheme are you doing? Do you know? Are you doing the sunburst that you had earlier?

The guitar looks great so far! You're doing an awesome job. The string-thru does look crooked though.
I say, once this is finished you should make a Les Paulocaster.
Yeah, I know. In reality only one is just ever so slightly off, that picture makes it look much worse than it is.
Haha, if I get the money I'm always down for building another!

Are you talking about the size of the holes? They're all the same, it doesn't make a difference.
Do you see it on the front or the back?
The back... and I'm talking about the "alignment" of the holes, and even the spacing between them.
It won't really effect it, I guess...

Just an update, I'll have pictures of the black burst up tomorrow.
My friend built his, it took him about a year. Its a great guitar (modeled after a Les Paul) but the fret board is messed up on the bottom and the strings don't raise up above the board

Thats pretty cool dude.
I don't plan on doing a bass anytime soon. I do play bass, but guitar is my main instrument, so for now that's what I'll be building.
I've been thinking of doing an explorer next. Not sure when that will be though, might be a while. haha
