Oh come now, being melodramatic and overly sensitive isn't something relegated only to women. And the dating jerks comment could be reversed to ask why guys only go for the girls with fake tans and boobs.
If you don't surround yourself with obnoxious, immature people a magical thing happens: all the drama and stupid stuff goes away! Find friends with self confidence who don't need to create drama to get attention or feel important.
Any other drama can and will be attributed to one's menstrual cycle. You try dealing with that every month without getting bitchy and over reacting :-p

why are girls afraid of commitment, for starters?
Well, speaking from my point of view with how I am, it's not that I'm afraid to commit. If I like the guy, I'd like to be in a relationship and I'd like it to be exclusive and committed. Any reason I'm hesitant is because I'm scared of getting hurt or just not so trusting because of guys who have screwed me over in the past. In the last relationship I was in, that made me insecure about a lot of things and that caused a lot of drama and was probably one of the biggest problems we had.

i just got out of a relationship that lasted a little over a year.. it ended because she began worrying about what might happen with her going off to college-- and potentially finding someone else with more interests in line with what she wants to do.. but, on top of that, as i learned after we broke up, she doesn't want to commit herself to anyone yet.. she wants to be with a lot more guys.
i don't get that mentality at all.. if you have a good thing going than why throw it away?

Honestly, I don't know. Different people think different ways. Personally, I've always been someone who just wants to find someone good and be with them and be happy. I haven't ever really been that interested in dating around or hooking up, I'd rather just be in one good relationship, so I don't really understand that mentality either.

Girls should be afraid of commitment. No matter how long you know someone, or how well you do, whether they're a great person or a bad person, they'll always do something to hurt you. Maybe not intentionally, but it's inevitable. It's either the boy or the girl, it all just depends on who first.

I'm not one to stare at hoo-hahs over eyes, ever. Regardless of size, shape, color.. or whatever other adjective you can think of. When you talk to someone you look them in the eyes. I never stared at my ex's chest, not even when she was nude... And she said I was the first who didn't just eye down her goods.. When we had sex I looked her in the eyes, or looked past her if I was caught up in the moment that much.

I'm just trying to point out that many of you men who are confused about women are generalizing. This is something as a woman, I hate more than most things men do. It's extremely frustrating.
We don't all fear commitment, we don't all have drama, we aren't all confusing. Just like men don't all watch sports, look at boobs constantly or never call back.

This could have just been an excuse - maybe her way of letting you down "easy." There's no logic to letting someone go that you love being with. If she thinks there's something more out there then it probably just means you weren't right for her.

I'm not really going off of a lot of personal experience here, just from what I've heard...but it seems that a lot of girls do things so as to not "hurt" the guy. Like not giving truthful explanations for break-ups and trying to hide from things. I personally wish that those girls would man up and be honest, as the guy is going to be "hurt" regardless of the outcome, but a lot of drama (a word thrown around a lot these days) can be avoided by doing so.
