I use a free program called Avira AntiVir -- I've been using it for over 2 years and I've never gotten a virus.

Everyone that voted Norton is a fool. It's fine for virus protection, but as for the amount of resources it uses up it may as well be its own virus.

Suites suck. They always end up doing one thing really well and sucking at everything else. You're better off going with individual products for each task. I use:

AVG - anti-virus
Zone Alarm - firewall
AdAware, Spybot, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blocker - anti-spyware
Abexo - registry cleaning
Firefox with Adblock and NoScript - because if you use IE I'll pray for you
KLC SMAC - spoofing your SMAC address
HiJack This - fixing anything that might have found its way through all of the above stuff
and Trojan Hunter - in the event a trojan gets on there (which hasn't happened in about 3 years, but better to have it and be safe than sorry)

There's probably more stuff I'm just not remembering right now.

If you have Norton or McAfee installed, please feel free to undo that.

I had an active subscription with McAfee and decided to try out AVG. It found in excess of 10 trojans and countless adware that was already on my computer.

Hense, McAfee is GARBAGE

There have been some problems with AVG on my brothers computer but he was using the free version so the pay version may be okay.

I am on XP and I have Zone Alarm firewall and then Ad Aware, Spybot, and symantec antivirus and I have never really had any major problems. Vista may be a different story though.

Avast! ....avg, mcafee, and norton suck. you pay for crap service and get even crappier service when not paying.

I've heard good things about Avast... but I've yet to have any problems with AVG, so I haven't seen the point in giving something else a try. But yeah, McAffee and Norton are both shit, just about all the well known pay services are.

Voted for Norton since I used to have it, but right now I'm using a cheaper one called nod32 and it works just perfect.

I use avg. It's ok. I have used many of those on the list. but the one on the list that i don't like would be Trend Micro. I remember getting a virus while having it running on my computer. It was detecting all kinds of fucked up shit. LOL it was funny at the time i guess, but i'll never use it again. Nod32 is decent.
