Fine, SUVs are wasteful. It seems to me like this really infringes on the freedom of the French, though. I'm all for fuel standards and the like, but outright banning a type of car is rediculous. Whatever floats their boat...

i used to agree that people should be allowed to drive whatever car they want, but then i realized that SUV's infringe upon every other drivers rights. they are dangerous to the other people on the road for other reasons than because they tend to rollover.

i was wondering if france even has SUV's, their car's tend to be extremely small and built for the city. what does europe have for SUV's? besides that huge ass BMW or mercedes one that was built for the german military that i now see cruising around here in the states....

No they're not. Half the SUVs we drive are BMW or Mercedes...they have those. Europe also has Ford cars and SUVs. I've seen them in Ireland, France, and Germany.

They're not only dangerous, but we (those who don't own SUVs) end up paying more in insurance because of it.

First I didn't mean brands, although if you want to go that route none of France's big three are sold in America; i.e. Citroen, Peugeot, or Renault....nor are any of Europe’s more "middle class brands," (i.e. Alfa Romeo, MG, Rover, Seat, Skoda, Vauxhall, Opel, Lada, and Fiat), with the exception of ford (whose American line differs greatly from Europe's) and a limited number of Chryslers....

and second what you failed to comprehend was that I meant the "style" or type of SUV's, not brand....most of the SUV's sold in American are "truck" based, while European models tend to be car based, with a large percentage of that coming from econo-cars, sub-compacts, and city cars...

Most large SUV's have been pull from the European markets, but even before that Ford only sold about a thousand Exploers a years and Chevy only dumped about 500 Suburbans a year (Car Sept. 2002)...so it was never a "large," or even noticeable portion of the SUV sales.....but you must also remember that not everyone in Europe live in cities, either (France is a rather large country http://www.aneki.com/map/map_France.html ).....

You're right, those brands are all similar to Saturns or Kias or whatever that we have and they don't. I'm only saying that Europe does have the same SUVs that we do...I know this because I've seen them there...

yes they have them, but they are not the norm...which was my point....here in america we have small hatchbacks and city cars but they are not the norm (like they are in Europe)....and so they wouldn't be considered "the average" american car......my point is is that the average european suv is different from the average american suv, and so a comparison can't really be made...

I just returned home last night from a two week stay in France, and I honestly didn't see a single SUV with the exception of an H2 Hummer in the middle of Paris...I wish I would've taken a picture, seriously an H2 driving around in a city with cars the size of American go-carts....
