I don't really think it needs one.It wouldn't translate well at all to a full length film. The show needs to much broader as far as it's production goes and it didn't use enough sets to do so.

Think about it though, it'd be all new sets - no apartment, no coffee house, no laugh track...it just wouldn't work. sex and the city worked as a movie because they always shot on location and there wasn't a laugh track, each episode was already like a mini movie.

I said it.Friends was a great show early on but the last few seasons were comparatively weak.

I can't think of many things Friends did better than Seinfeld and that includes, casting, acting, writing, set design, and editing. Friends got put on the air because of the success Seinfeld had and NBC needed a cleaner, safer Seinfeld/NYC based show to put in its 8:00 spot.

I also don't see how anyone could think the latter seasons of Friends were on par with what they did previously. They even directly ripped off their own scenes (ie. Rachel/Joey and the scene where Rachel kept hitting Joey when kissing him which copied her scene with Ross where she kept laughing). The acting also went downhill towards the end and it was obvious they were there more for a good time and the money rather than putting out great shows like they once did.

The show just stayed on for too long which is in part NBC's fault since they were struggling. They mastered the 8:00 type comedy but the writers/cast got lazy after Chandler and Monica got married. Rachel getting pregnant was probably the biggest misstep of the series if I had to point to one. Also, my two favorite things about the show (Ross/Rachel and Chandler's character) took a nosedive. Marriages are tough to make funny and the show's longevity made it awkward because it was too obvious the show was biding time before the end where they would finally put Ross and Rachel back together.

stayillogical
08/28/08, 08:41 AM
Disagree. Rachel/Joey was just paralleling Rachel/Ross. There's nothing wrong with that. It showed how Rachel and Ross could make it work and Rachel and Joey could not. It's also called a callback.

And disagree on all other counts too, but I'm tired of the same debate with the same user.

That sort of happened to me. I used to absolutely love it and watched it every week. After it ended, I didn't watch it for a while. I think, for me at least, I got so used to how a lot of TV shows are today that the function of a sitcom seemed different when I went back to it. That being said, my girlfriend absolutely adores this show. She's got every single season on DVD and we watch it fairly often. I do still enjoy it though it's also not really my thing anymore either. I have to say that I love Ross. Chandler is of course my favorite but I've grown to love Ross's whining and moping.

nfggc10

And disagree on all other counts too, but I'm tired of the same debate with the same user.A callback is not a direct copy of one scene to a previous one or on that large of a scale either. I also think you're trying to justify something that was clearly the result of the show lasting too long and writers having to bide time with a few small failing relationships before Ross and Rachel could reunite.

SkyHeldUpByStar
08/28/08, 08:55 AM
I don't like what the Rachel/Joey relationship did to Joey in particular. I mean, they built that relationship up for so long and then just completely dropped it after the whole Rachel laughing while attempting sex thing. It was just sort of, "well, meh, that (sex and the entire relationship as a whole) didn't work but hey! At least we tried, whelp goodnight!" After that they never really mentioned it again like it wasn't a big deal.Something about it just bugged me. Then (admittedly I watched Joey to see how it would fare) when Joey got his own show they had him mention to another character that he'd only truly been in love once and that was with Rachel. In that moment his whole story made him seem like a real sadsack to me because suddenly it seemed like it actually was a big deal even though Friends never made mention of it again.

They were forced to come up with these filler relationships and just didn't execute any of them very well. I also thought they screwed up the character of Ross. He started out as being very intelligent and professional and yet all of the sudden he's dating a student and faking accents to get people to like him. It was just very weird. Joey, instead of taking the normal intelligence growth experienced in someone's late 20s, early 30s became more dumb as the series went along. They tried to make him more sensitive but even that couldn't even things out. Most of the characters became parodies of what they originally were which is why I likened what's happening with The Office as to what happened with Friends.

Seinfeld had 1 story arc maximum per season and apart from one scene during the second season there were no heart felt moments. Each episode was its own entity as well so you could basically turn on any episode without needing any previous knowledge of the series to be able to follow it.

Both shows have huge name recognition. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the only one out of both shows that got out of it without being horribly typecastedYeah the shows Michael and Jason tried after failed quickly. They probably tried to come back with something too soon which didn't help. I've never seen Julia's new show but it's been a while and I'm happy for her. Jerry was typecasted but luckily for him he was just playing himself and never wanted to do another series so it didn't matter.

And a big part of it is whether you prefer series that have continuous storylines with relationships and character development. Seinfeld had 1 story arc maximum per season and apart from one scene during the second season there were no heart felt moments. Each episode was its own entity as well so you could basically turn on any episode without needing any previous knowledge of the series to be able to follow it.

Yeah the shows Michael and Jason tried after failed quickly. They probably tried to come back with something too soon which didn't help. I've never seen Julia's new show but it's been a while and I'm happy for her. Jerry was typecasted but luckily for him he was just playing himself and never wanted to do another series so it didn't matter.
yeah i'm a big sucker for a story i can get wrapped into.

I think Friends probably made me laugh overall more, but Seinfeld was a better show by a landslide.

I can honestly say that I watch Friends every weekday if I'm not out. I never fail to turn the TV on at 10, and I always always laugh even though I can probably recite the best lines. This series never failed me.

Curious: what scene is this? It's towards the end of "The Deal" episode. Kramer gives Elaine a birthday card and she chokes up reading it.

And see my above post where I asked people to stop with the Seinfeld chatter. Seriously, it's a tad bit annoying when that's all that goes on in a Friends thread.

Started watching the 10 series boxset at the end of January and I am on the first few episodes of Series 6. Really slacked over the last months as I've been more into The Inbetweeners and The Office and have had essays and my dissertation. :-(

Except for when the bees get to show off in front of their little bee friends! :) Pheobe's the best by far.

Ross is mint too.
