OK, I used to be a total 'emo-kid' you might say. I looooved Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard, Saves the Day, ALL those bands. Over the last couple weeks to a month, I haven't even listened to any of those bands. Lately I've fallen completely in love with Franz Ferdinand, The Stills, Modest Mouse, The Faint, and numerous other bands that are nothing what I listened to such a short time before. I still like the old faves, dont get me wrong, but now I'm looking in a completely different direction. Somebody once told me that I would change my music style one day and that it happens to a lot of kids in highschool. I didn't believe him, but now I see it's at least partly true.

So has this happened to anyone else? Just all of a sudden having your musical style and taste change?

kinda, tbs used to be in my old e-mail adress but ive never committed to being a total emo kid or whatever, i just listen to what sounds good to me at the time, i dont dress a certain way (well i have band t-shirts but thats not all i wear) or quote songs all the time or whatever, i just listen to whatever i like at the time

I still love all the bands I always have. I'm just .. expanding my musical taste. I suppose.

Well yea I still like the old bands and if I listened to them it's not like I would gag or anything. But I just mean I'm not trying to find anymore music that sounds like that and I'm listening and getting into different 'genres'.

Yeah I used to be a total emo-kid too. But over the past month or two I've listened to nothing but hardcore/screamo. I still like some of the emo but not all. It sucks cuz I have like 50 cd's I have no use for now. So yeah, it's happened to others.

06/13/04, 02:17 PM
yeah actually...it's weird. i still listen to my "emo" music or whatever constantly, but i've thrown in a few indie rock albums and some screamo or whatever...weird. oh well, you can't expect yourself to have the same musical taste forever. i don't mind. i'm just expanding my tastes, i'm not abandoning anything.

Um hi, welcome to growing up?

No but seriously, did you really think that you would listen to TBS forever? I mean... you dont just slam on the brakes when you get to something you like... isn't it a continuous cycle? Maybe that's just me... I'm always branching out and getting into new stuff. I just listen to whatever I like and go off of that. I try not to pigeon hole myself.

I've always listened to everything under the sun, so I can't say I fall neatly into this group, but I tend to go through month long "phases" where I'll listen primarily to one type of music, but never push the rest aside. Anyway, the search for something new and different is nothing out of the ordinary. Your senses need a constant working out; when they get used to one thing, they need something new to keep them primed.

To an extent, yes. But the bands to named do absolutely nothing for me. I honestly don't see....well, nevermind.

I used to listen to only country, then only rap, then I hated screaming, now I don't listen to 99% of rap, no country, and love screaming.

Is that change enough?

Franz Ferdinand's only good song is their single. The rest of their album is shit.

It's normal to develop different musical tastes. Every music fan goes through that phase at one time in their life.

I won't listen to anything, especially jazz, gospal, classical, opera, ska. All those genres suck ass. Country rules.

fuck yea man, the Faint!

I listen to everything from Hardcore to Trip Hop and everything in between, so this kinda applies to me, but... it applied to me when I was about 14, finding all different kinds of music to love.

i still listen to everything though. rap, yes. country, not a lot but i still enjoy it sometimes. i like old-school country, i.e. hank williams, willie nelson.

i even listen to classical.

Taking Back Sunday, Saves the Day and Dashboard are EMO?
Woah, woooah. You lost me. My cat is an 'emo-kid' he listens to Simple Plan and has some of those plastic glasses without any lenses in them. He's way emofantastical, you should all be jealous.

I don't stick to any particular genre of music so I don't get these little 'shifts' in what I listen to. I listen to whatever suits me.

this is a good thread. Its true.
I think most people start out with bands like TBS, Brand New etc. And then after a while they either stick with it, or go off into a different direction. As mentioned, some got into the new stuff like modest mouse, franz ferdinand and what not. Others like myself got into more hardcore stuff like everytime i die etc.

i dont know if its just getting bored with the music or growing up =)
that being said, i still love brand new :)

I've always liked all types of music except country, nu-metal & "hardcore". but if a song is good, I will like it.. no matter what type of music it may be.

Have also always loved piano-rock & acoustic/mellow ..and I still do. Its my favourite type of music.. so yeah.... not much change I guess?

I wasn't an emo kid. That's why I put quotes around it. I never considered myself an emo-kid, it was just the genre I was pigeon holed into by others because of the music I chose to listen to. I never really got into that whole thing of being sad and letting a boy/girl break your heart then shed a million tears about it, just so you could write a sensitive song. But now since I hardly even listen to emo, people who don't know what theyre talking about can't even call me emo because now it really wouldn't make any sense.

And thank you for calling me an idiot, I love being insulted by people who don't even know me. It's always good to have a nice laugh. :lol2:

When I started listening to this kind of music "punk rock" it was back during Green Day - Basketcase, Offspring - Smash and of course the Dude Ranch days. Since then I wouldn’t have thought twice if you would have said I would be listening to the shit I listen to right now. I guess you can say I’ve expanded my "listening ears" along with all of you. If we listened to the same type of music all the time we would kill our selves. I’m constantly trying to get the new music that comes out because it's become almost like a chore. Yes a chore to find and unwrap new artists as they come along. Certain musicians in our genre of music are trying to pretty much save the music we love. Lately it has seemed that only the true musicians are trying to raise the bar in their music, trying to creating something new. For a while it seemed like everything was getting pop punk, or scremo etc. But I’m glad to see some change in our music this past 6-8 months. Oh and for the rap out there, its not all bad Outkast, Jay Z, Kayne, Eminem and Dre know what they are doing. Good thread.

i used to like atomic kitten in year 6.
then when i came up to secondary school i started to like green day and then at the end of year 7 i heard a song by alkaline trio, and i loved them to bits since then.
and until year 8 i hated metal. then i heard slayer, and pantera, and metallica. and i loved it. and i actually like slipknot now. and all that kind of stuff.
and i really like every music style now. apart from r&b, pop and things like that.

Sounds like a plan!

At a wedding I went to once, this guy was drunk and he was going around telling people 'Twins win! Twins win!' then he'd get a spaced out look on his face. After a couple of seconds in la la land he would come back and say 'My brother shot a deer once.' It was funny.

And Thomas Sway, I'm sorry I'm making you have seizures. Seizures sure do suck. I've been looking for a new one of late, and if you're in any luck, I'll find one!
