somewhat interesting read. i'll be the first to say that, while i enjoy some indie bands, i'm not the most "in the know" about the entirety of the genre, ethics, etc. but that article still didn't really tell me anything new. while i agreed with a few points & laughed & found myself thinking "that's so true" to this:

....I asked him: 'Whose LP is this?' And he said, 'No, it's a compilation.' Every track sounded identical. The guitars, the production; all these bands sound like they're made in the same studio with the same producer. It's such a ball-less, soulless, generic whitewashed indie sound. You could probably take a member from each band and throw them together in a new group and no one would be able to tell the difference. They're completely interchangeable....

a lot of that article was a little vague & could be said for any genre that happens to be the current flavour of the month. same thing has happened throughout history, from mainstream pop-punk in the 90's to funk, reggae, grunge, etc, etc. once it starts to sell, everyone wants to cash in. & the following sums up a lot of problems with todays music (well more so the music industry i suppose) in general

"Everything has accelerated," says Collins. "I can't believe Scouting For Girls. I remember hearing that song 'She's So Lovely' and thinking, 'What's this shit?' And the next thing you know, it's a hit, and they're a hit, and the next two singles are hits. New bands go massive on their first album, but there's almost no chance they can follow it up on their second. Record companies are there for the shareholders. If they can make some money quickly off the next big indie band, they will, but it doesn't mean the band will make any. The band will be left scratching their heads and wondering what happened. Whereas Arctic Monkeys will continue to be supported by Domino, and luckily they're massively talented – enough to continue making good records.

I get what the article is saying - yeah there will always be music that is shit, no matter what genre you look at, but I honestly don't feel that indie music is declining at all, there's just a few artists/bands that are shit here and there.

Genres of music ebb and flow like the ocean.

They recede, come back again for awhile and go back out again.

Great read of an article. I have posted it on my blog.

*sigh* the amount of bullshit indie on UK radio depresses me
"If we end up with 20 years of Tory government, it'll be The Pigeon Detectives' fault." haha!

Interesting Artivle, and i definitely agree with it.
There are so many bands in the UK Charts these days that call themselves Indie but they are the most boring, generic shit ive ever heard.
Its quite sad.
Hopefully something will be done.

I don't know much about the actual music associated with the genre at all. Seems as half of all music out there will looped in with that genre.

But I will state that the labeling of music as "indie" nowadays is all but dead.

He's talking about English 'indie' (bad), as opposed to American indie (good).

Does the decline have something to do with most of it being crap?

Yes. And?

Man you should see my local 'scene'... It's only over the last few months or so that you could actually call it a scene. And it's pretty much full of the shit this guy is writing about.

Well, at least the author blames The Libertines and Arctic Monkeys.
