The Maine – Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
Record Label: Fearless Records
Release Date: July 8, 2008
The beauty of pop-punk is all around us.
I see it when I peer down at my turquoise and lime green limited edition Air Force Ones. I see it on my computer screen while I’m bashing other reviewers for hating my favorite bands. I feel it when I pen every new, wonderful, totally original opening paragraph about a pop punk band. There’s just too much about this music – and life for Christ’s sake – to love. I’m in love! With a girl. With The Maine!
Let me tell you about it!
The Maine are original in the way that Doritos keep making zestier Cool Ranch or tangier Nacho Cheese chips. (And we’re supposed to celebrate this? It tastes the f**king same!) Rather than nut-busting rockers, they prefer to chill us out with acoustic guitars and jog-don’t-sprint tempos. Also, while most of the lyrics are terrible, they still find a way to resonate with me. I’ve been there: One time a girl blocked my advances and I almost died. Another actually broke up with me and I was clinically dead for 6 minutes.
“Everything I Ask For” buzzes to life with mid-tempo strumming and John O’Callaghan’s semi-abrasive vocals. He’s a mix between Kenny Vasoli and the weird named singer of Cute is What We Aim For, just like extra crunchy peanut butter is the perfect blend of whole peanuts and buttered peanuts. Akin to an 80’s hair band anthem riding on a gust of hot wind, “Girls Do What They Want” develops into a massive chorus complete with “Whoa Oh’s” and all the other things teenage girls – and I – like. Also, if my super hot, but f**king crazy girlfriend is any indication – Hey Christine! – The Maine are completely right on with the lyrics here. Women are such a strange species.
If Christine breaks up with me I’ll die forever.
Skipping ahead to the awesomely strong dosage of lovelorn anthems (“This Is The End” and “Whoever She Is”), it becomes clear why The Maine are so likeable. Spinning moderately fresh takes on teenage angst and frustration is all it takes to hit it big these days. If your hair falls over your eye in just the right way and you happen to own a To Write Love On Her Arms hoodie, well, that’s just icing on the emo cake. Pianos and an appreciation for acoustic mood-rock helps to take this band out of the more bruising (yet still super trendy) summer music category occupied by bands like Hit The Lights and Forever The Sickest Kids. Also, if you don’t dig the handclap section in “This Is The End,” you’re going to hell.
Quick note: If you like the song “Closing Time” by Semisonic, acquire “Into Your Arms” immediately.
“You Left Me” shows a fascination with technology and alien abductions by distorting vocals and utilizing a high-stepping electro beat. O’Callaghan uses a bit more range here (he tends to sing the same few notes on every song, but why get nitpicky?) and the trendy factor of this song actually works in its favor. Sure is weird how a popular formula is actually a good formula. “We’ll All Be…” slide guitars its way into your heart like a pretty girl when she wants you to give her an Angry Dragon (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=angry+dragon). But in the same way that she tries to not look like a slut, this song’s alt-country vibe is laid on very thin, so as not to scare away any mascara-wearing 11 year olds. Meanwhile, the galloping drum beat and ringing guitar effects set a tone that’s perfect for lines like, “Don’t say goodbye / Cause in the morning we’ll see you around.” It’s… cute; you’ll dig it.
Americans young and old will buy and enjoy this compact disc. At first they’ll criticize it for being juvenile, and then they’ll realize there’s no such thing. Growing up doesn’t mean you have to forget your past, but it’s hard to find a disc like Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop relatable when you refuse to do a bit of legwork. I hope you won’t skip over The Maine because they’re prettier than you. I hope you won’t skip over The Maine because “I Must Be Dreaming” might make them a million dollars on the wings of its catchy acoustic guitars and cymbal madness. I, for one, can’t stop and won’t stop listening to this record.
You shouldn’t stop, either.

Sounds identical to Kenny Vasoli would have been a better description of the vocals on this album.
very well written review but I think this band is trash.

Band sucks but has a couple catchy jams, "You Left Me" is a guilty pleasure track for me and this band has a lot of potential to blow up. Very nicely written review. We call the "Angry Dragon" a "White Dragon" where I come from. Urban dictionary needs to get there disgusting sexual positions correctly.

I bought a shirt back in March that says Can't Stop Won't Stop from a retailer that I heard about on here and now I have two reasons to proudly wear it. There's also a pretty funny picture of me completely asleep at some restaurant in Central England and I'm wearing the shirt and the caption is: "Can Stop, Did Stop." haha

I've always enjoyed reading your reviews whether I agree with them or not.
But frankly, I couldn't get through this album. I thought it was a great leap backwards in comparison to the EP (which I loved).

Great review -- the album is still growing on me, because I've refused to stop spinning Danger Radio. And once i finish that CD, nostalgia hits and I'm listening to FTSK and The Cab, then its time again for Danger Radio and maybe a bit of Punk Goes Crunk. (Don't judge me haha xD I listen to what I like)
But the few times I have listened to CSWS, I've really enjoyed it.
Thanks again for the review!! (hilarious!)

I personally like this album. I take it at face value and enjoy it a lot. I think a lot of people are turned off by the bad lyrics and boy band-esque look they have going.

Agree on every level. All these new bands sound exactly the same with their boring and typical lyrics about the same old shit. Instead of relying on their musical talent, they rely on their style or some technical beat to make a song catchy. There are some bands out there still(bayside, boys night out, etc.) that have the ability to mix it up and do something different. Please Stop giving in to these new age pop bands, then maybe we won't be hearing these guys becoming popular every year and their scenester fans will move on.

I love your reviews, Blake. They're always entertaining. Also, I completely agree with the "jog-don’t-sprint tempos" part. Sometimes I just want to hand them a Red Bull so that they'll just get on with the song. But then again, it is what seems to separate them (a little bit) from other bands in their genre.

More like gay is what all these bands aim for. It's cuz of people like you nowadays that these garbage mediocre bands in this stupid trend are getting credit they never earned. That's why warped tour has gone to shit; good pop punk bands like Boys Night Out, Bayside, I Am The Avalanche, Halifax and The Matches are who deserve it and have good music not just whiny girl bs.
Your complete lack of any knowledge of the English language is funnier than the fact that you made a gay joke, which isn't even funny considering most of us aren't in middle school anymore.
You also said Punchline was good pop-punk. I lol'ed.
In other news, good review, though I feel like this is an album I'll ultimately have to pass on. I"ll download it first, though.

Have you ever heard of trees? They have different branches and stuff, but they're all from the same tree. Just because a band doesn't write the most intricate and talented stuff doesn't mean they aren't good. It's something called writing a good song that these "garbage mediocre bands" know how to do, and it's something Boys Night Out forgot after they wrote the masterpiece that is Train Wreck. It's amazing how much four chords can do when you know how to write a really catchy song.

Fantastic review for a good cd. Blake, I toltally get what you are trying to say in this review: The best part of pop-punk is that it's just fun. It's not too serious or meaningful. Like I wouldn't call CSWS a masterpiece but The Maine can make some catchy songs. I love Everything I Ask For and Girls Do What They Want becuase they're fun and make you want to dance. I think John Oh kinda sounds like Jenny from TSL and only alittle bit like Shaant but I think The Maine is less annoying than the old CIWWWAF. And I never really noticed how the melody of Into Your Arms sounds like Closing Time. I love the lyrics but the melody's similarity to a song I already like probably makes me like the song even more. Great Job.

Akin to an 80’s hair band anthem riding on a gust of hot wind, “Girls Do What They Want” develops into a massive chorus complete with “Whoa Oh’s” and all the other things teenage girls – and I – like.

I'll agree with most of you...when i first heard the maine i thought they were just another pop-punk myspace sensation, their EP The Way We Talk had maybe one or two songs that i enjoyed on it but after a while i stopped listening to them. But i recently downloaded both albums and i have to say that Can't Stop Won't Stop is a very enjoyable album, no one song really stands out among all the tracks but "I must be dreaming" has got to be my favorite out of the bunch. Yes i know their songs are very basic chord progressions and lyrically ridiculous but it is so catchy i cant stop listening to it. The maine clearly has a lot of potential to grow and i think they have done well so far.

They might be from the same tree. But they are mediocre just accept it.There pretty generic. They write some good songs but its nothing that u havent heard before.Dont compare them with Boys night out .at least that band has proved what they can do.Wow the maine has one full album to there name..And they never do anything close to what they done with trainwreck.Just keep hoping on the catchy trendy band wagon.cuz it wont last very long.u make me sick.theres no heart into this music .thats y its mediocre.it this was 2005 and back this band would never got signed.

I make you sick because I enjoy a good song?
Your spelling, typing, and grammar make me sick.
If this was 2005 they wouldn't be a generic band. They would be the first people to do this. Just cuz it's generic doesn't mean there's no heart in it. I mean, yeah, The Maine has some shitty lyrics and shitty inspiration (i.e. girls being sluts, sex, the usual) but maybe thats what they hold close to there hearts. You can't say if there's no heart in the music or not. I can't either, but I'd be willing to bet that these guys put a lot of heart into a lot of the songs on Can't Stop, Won't Stop. I doubt you've actually listened to the album, but there some country influence in some of the songs and it actually starts fading away from the generic pop-punk at times. No one ever said music had to be ground-breaking or intricate or a masterpiece like Trainwreck was for people to enjoy it. It just has to sound good. And you know what, this stuff sounds good and is fun to listen to.

this was a great review dude, seriously one of the best i've read.
however i must say i read this more than i listen to that album, which is currently serving as a host to my vitamin water, so i don't get stains on my wooden desk.

one of the biggest, not very good. I wrote a review and gave it a 74 or something, after not listening t it for 3 months then listening to it, I cut the grade down a good 40%.

haha,
I worked with some hilarious people this summer when I wrote this review. They taught me the ways of the Angry Dragon. Not literally or anything, though, cuz that would be vile.

How are these guys copycats if they're just playing the music that they like? Last time I checked, people who start a band, start it because they like music, not to be a "copycat". They are different from other bands, they're similar...yeah...but they aren't the same and i don't think they intend to be.
ha great cd. not as good as the way we talk ep though. they should have thrown the way we talk and if i only had the heart. and cant stop wont stop reminds me of that rockafella records anthem a while ago ha. great band though. great all 4 times ive seen them. and john ohh and garret talked to me and my friends for like an hour even when young ladies were coming up to them.
