A lot of my friends adore his stuff, and are ALWAYS quoting his stand-up bits. I watched this one special with my friends that he did, I think it was called A Vicious Circle. He had a few funny lines, but the rest just seemed like he was trying too hard. And he laughed at his own jokes, which is something that annoys me. But all my friends found it to be hysterical.

And I have no desire to see any of his movies, they all look bad.

Aw, I respectfully disagree. I think the only reason people are coming to see him perform is just simply because he WAS Danny Tanner. People like to see a guy who was supposed to be all sweet and innocent turn out to be completely rude and tell gross jokes.

It's funny at first, but would the same guy be selling out clubs if he hadn't played Danny Tanner?

My friends and I really got into Harmful if Swallowed...but that was it for Dane's material.

Speaking of Bill Burr, I was at the the O&A traveling virus comedy tour in Camden, NJ and it was the only time I've seen a comic snap and go after the audience for a full set. After being the third comic to be booed, Burr went after the Camden/ Philly crowd. It was amazing. I loved every minute of it.

Erm. Depends on who you ask. And it depends on your definition of "British." Jim Jefferies is technically Australian, and recently moved to Los Angeles but...He spent a solid couple of years building what I perceive to be a fairly large fanbase over in England.

And Jim Jefferies is ten times funnier than the vast majority of comedians from the States. One of my all-time favorites.

Haha. Jefferies is a bit more, uh, on the vulgar side, I guess one could say? Haha. But Gervais is funny as hell! But I absolutely loathe Russel Brand, both as an actor and a comedian. To me, it seems like he's a bit of a one-trick pony. If you think that one-trick is funny, more power to ya'. Just not my thing. Haha.

I tend to skip ahead to the interview portion of his podcasts. I dig his stand-up, but...It tends to be a bit much. Haha. I just appreciate the "behind the laughs" shit that he tends to do. Case-in-point? It was awesome listening to him interview Jim Gaffigan, not so much because it was funny but because Gaffigan went in-depth as to how he writes his material (i.e., his "meta voice" giving the mainstream audience permission to laugh at his weird shit). The Carlos Mencia interview was really great too...And very honest. Homeboy's a thief, for sure after that one.

To be honest, I don't listen to much else in the way of podcasts because I'm a big fan of Opie & Anthony and Ron & Fez so...That consumes much of my "talk" listening time. Haha. But I do listen to the Joe Rogan Experience and Bill Burr's podcast occassionally.

I've heard good things about Carolla, though. Who hosts the others that you just name-dropped?

Yeah he gets preachy as fuck for the first 10 minutes or whatever and i cant handle it haha.

I like Rogan and Burr's. Rogan is a psycho haha i love his theories on everything.

But yeah, uhm, Comedy Film Nerds is Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini, Doug Loves Movies is Doug Benson, and Fitzdog Radio is Greg Fitzsimmons. Each of the 3 podcasts have amazing, amazing comical guests every episode man, it's great.

Yeah, I mean, the importan thing to remember about Maron is that half the time he's really just talking to himself more than the listener. Haha. He's a great example of a guy who uses his art as a form of therapy. It's like, he's talking to you...But mostly just to convince himself of it. At least, that's how I've always perceived it.

Rogan is a fucking nut job/drug addict, and I love him for it. He's coming back to Boston in August--need to get a ticket for that one. Bill Burr's a bit of a conspiracy theorist, as well, but I don't think it really shines through as much as it does with Rogan. Haha. I wish Robert Kelly and Colin Quinn would do their podcast more frequently...Kelly's kind of "eh" in podcast form but Quinn is brilliant all over.

As for the other Podcasts? I haven't heard of the other guys and Doug Benson annoys the crap out of me unless he's on VH-1. And even then sometimes, I'm not too sure about him.

That "Christmas Shoes" bit is phenomenal. But as far as that being the "best owning" of a heckler goes? See the Bill Burr video posted above. Homeboy takes on an entire city in a far more brutal fashion than Patton could ever dream of.

Comedy Death-Ray is a weekly show at UCB Los Angeles and the radio show is something Scott Aukerman does every Friday on internet radio and they make it into a podcast. It's really fucking awesome stuff and there are a ton of episodes to go back and listen to. That clip was from the Thanksgiving show and it had Jimmy Pardo, Paul F., Mike Cera, James Adomian, Nick Kroll and a couple other cats that made it really, really great.

Bobby Bottleservice is phenomenal. Haha.

And the big draw for me is Maron's interviews. He does an excellent job at keeping it low-key, yet confronting issues as they arise (his Dane Cook interview was so uncomfortable, yet informative and always remained totally honest and open).

That and it's great to hear comedians talk about comedy without performing, y'know? It's rare to see that side of them. The "human" side where they display their insecurities, talk about their craft, etc. I love it.

That being said - see Marc if he ever rolls through town. He's pretty fuckin' great live. When he came through Boston, he basically did a TON of off the cuff stuff about the city, interacted with the audience, etc. and was hilarious throughout.

08/09/10, 09:28 PM
Agreed! Did you hear part two?Yeah. The whole thing is very interesting.

After the first part I felt kind of bad for him. And I felt bad for a lot of the shit I talked about him. After the second I've realized that he's just the kind of guy that exists in every business. The guy that will throw anybody under the bus to get ahead. You see that everywhere. There's people that are so egotistical or so self absorbed that they will do anything to further their own career or their own agenda. I just don't really get it. Maybe it's just because I'm not that type of person. Like I can't fathom fucking somebody over to further myself. Not in school or work or anything.

But I guess that's why Mencia got a show and has a big house and all that shit. And while I've never done stand up (I'd like to, but I doubt I ever do it) I can't imagine doing that. I don't know really know the culture behind stand up, which is why I enjoy this podcast a lot, but I don't think that is right. I don't think that is an honest way to further your career.

But it seems from that interview (which seemed really honest, like he really opened up) that he has something to prove to himself. Like he doesn't care how many people he screwed over, as long as he's the one on top. I couldn't sleep at night knowing that I took away somebody's first chance to headline.

I'm listening to the interview with Robin Williams now. He's talking about how Richard Pryor took all of them (other comics) under his wing. That's what Mencia could have done. He could have taken all of those other Latino comics under his wing, given them a chance to succeed, and just helped some people out. And it seems like he started doing that. But then at some point he just switches and takes their jokes.

To sum everything up, I guess, this interview has shown me that stand up is a business like any other. There's people willing to do anything to get to the top, but at the same time there's their foils--the guys that want to help others get better. Mencia is one of the first types of people. So yeah, he probably stole jokes. Maybe even consciously.

I kind of rambled, and this post turned into sorting my feelings about all this stuff. This probably makes little sense, but whatever. At the same time, I feel kind of lame for taking something this old as serious as I did.

The difference between stand-up comedy and other areas of the industry is the immediacy of it. You hear a joke once, and that's essentially it. You laugh the hardest the first time, y'know? Let's say there's an underground band that writes a song and another, more famous band hears it and covers it. They have a hit based on that song. Sometimes the smaller bands can see a spike in record sales, more fans care about that song when they play it at shows, etc. That and they get royalty checks. Haha.

With comedy? It's a bit different. It's not like Mencia was stealing from dudes who were making money. He was taking concepts from younger comics and not giving them credit. To a young comic? A mediocre joke or concept like that could be their ticket to a spot on a better gig or a talk show or WHATEVER. Or it could be refined later on. But if Mencia does it? Well, they're fucked. And the general public assumes that Mencia is being original, so...

Yeah. It's a loose comparison. But you get what I'm saying, I hope.

It's interesting that you point out that you don't know much about the comedy "scene," because to be honest, I don't think anybody really does. Haha. Which is part of what I love about this podcast! Between listening to this podcast, Joe Rogan's podcast, and being a regular listener to Opie & Anthony on Sirius/XM, I think I'm beginning to get a picture of what it's like to be a stand-up comic...

I've done stand up. I've even been paid to do stand up on more than one occasion. It's pretty fucking hard, and the scene is weird. I actually have a pretty interesting story to share that happened recently.

I started doing stand up in November. It's something I've wanted to do since I was 12. My best friend and I started writing together and going to open mics in November. We were both good for beginners and did pretty well in front of the crowds (most of the time). Then, I went back to school, got busier with other stuff, and had 2 or 3 confidence rattling nights in a row, while my best friend continued to get better. He's really pretty good now. here is a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEv5O4L678Q

Anyways, for various reasons, I haven't performed since mid-April. I'd also like to point out any joke I ever did was 100% my own. Well, recently my friend Chris (from the video above), was at one of the open mics we both used to frequent a lot. One of the comedians we both knew had someone tell them that I was recently stealing jokes from this comedian Tim D. Not only was this not true, but I haven't done comedy since mid-April, so I don't know how I could be stealing jokes recently. Secondly, Tim D's style and my style were sooo different. He's slow, awkward, Steven Wright/Zach Galifianakis one liner type, where I was animated and did longer bits about how vampires and guidos are similar and how my nose is really fucking Jewish. We're not similar at all. Then, the guy accused me of stealing his name. Well, it just so happens that my first name is Tim, and my last name happens to be Jay. So I went on stage with my real life name of Tim Jay and was accused of stealing Tim D's stage name.

I should also mention that Tim D is a young comedian. He is funny, talented, and he gets paid to do comedy. He also happens to be a neurotic bitch.

Well, my friend and other comedians had my back, but it pissed me off a little bit that I was being accused of stealing jokes in a scene where it is such a big no no. I would feel sooo guilty if I stole a joke. It goes against everything I stand for. I mean you don't know how many times I've been at open mics or paid shows and seen PROFESSIONALS and AMATEURS steal jokes. I was at a show where Juston McKinney headlined (has had multiple comedy central specials) and the host (who is a paid comedian) literally do this bit by John Mullaney http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo8-EQEO_BM. Now some times comedians will think of the same jokes. It happens all the time. But that bit is so fucking specific that that host clearly stole it.

There's tons of other shit that goes on that I'd be willing to share if people are interested, but there are positives too. If you want to do stand up, it's easy to get started. I've had some (relative) success, and I gotta say nothing beats the feeling of getting off that stage when you killed. It's amazing. I'm currently on a hiatus from stand-up, but I hope to get back into it as soon as I can.

I'd personally love to hear some of your stories! And perhaps you can maybe beef up what I was trying to convey about joke stealing. It's hard to describe. In a way, it seems to be more intimate than stealing a guitar riff or a vocal line from a musician. Because you're not just stealing the cadence, you're stealing a part of the person's personality. I hope that made sense.

Also, far as I can tell? Most comics who are confident wouldn't deal with "stealing" the way the guy in your story did.

I mostly performed at open mics and had only a few gigs through a booker that I knew. I was really very knew in comedy, and not good enough for really any gigs in Boston. That being said, if you want a place to check out comedy, check out The Comedy Studio in Harvard Square. That is the big breeding ground in Boston. Myq Kaplan and Shane Mauss from Last Comic Standing came up there as well as national acts like Mike Birbiglia, Gary Gulman, and Joe Wong. The Studio has a lot of young comedians, and the shows are really pretty funny. The owner, Rick Jenkins, basically tries to look for younger comics with the chance of making it big, and gives them a lot of stage time. It's the club for talent in Boston. Another place is Mottley's comedy club near Faneuil Hall. They can have bigger acts or smaller acts, and it was meant to fill the void left by the Comedy Connection's move to a theater. I was actually supposed to open a Friday show there in May, but I backed out due to my hiatus and gave the spot to my friend Chris.

Also, there are tons of open mics, if you ever want to try your hand at comedy. The best one I ever went to in Boston is Thursday nights at the Howard Johnson hotel near Fenway Park at 8 pm. Although, if the Sox are playing at home, then the open mic is usually cancelled. Another place I went to is the Burren in Somerville on Wednesdays at 10pm. It's hit or miss, but there are tons of other places: http://www.unscenecomedy.com/open-mics.html.

It's hard for me to talk too much of joke stealing. I never had anyone steal from me. There's always tons of people who have similar topics and jokes. It just happens. The story I mentioned about the professional who opened for Juston Mckinney with that John Mullaney joke (which I'll refer to What's New Pussycat), you could be like well, maybe he thought of it before Mullaney or Mullaney stole it from him. EXCEPT, I saw him a few weeks earlier at an open mic telling the What's New Pussycat joke, and saying it was new material he was working on. Mullaney had been doing What's New Pussycat for years. Then, when I saw the thief open for Juston McKinney, he kept the joke exactly the same and changed the song to Copa Cabana. Clearly, he thefted it. I told a booker about it, and he was just like, "Let him be. You're new. If he keeps doing it, it'll get noticed and he'll get what he deserves."

I'll definitely be checking out the Comedy Studio. Thanks for the rec! I've actually been to Mottley's once when Rich Vos rolled through...Pretty good club -- they did something recently with Lamont Price that I was planning on hitting up but something else came up.

That seems to be the general concensus as far as joke thieves go. But I think the Carlos Mencia thing really gets other comics in a tizzy because it's not like Dane Cook "stealing" from Louis C.K. or whatever, he lifts it from unknown comics. Supposedly. But either way, I definitely agree...People come up with similar concepts all the time. And even deliver them in similar ways and have it be completely innocent, I'm sure.

I know there's more than a few comedians (Jim Norton I know has stated it more than a few times on O&A) who don't pay attention to most other comics because they want to prevent overlap, subconsciously taking material, etc.

To be honest, I've tried prepping some material--and would love to try it sometime--but I don't know that I have it in me. I get fucking awful anxiety about being on-stage and such. Not yet, anyway. But I'll keep this link. Just in case. Haha.

I used to have pretty bad stage fright, but you can sort of conquer it. Even if only a few people laugh, it still feels good. If a joke doesn't go well, you just move on. Eventually, you'll get a laugh. Once you get laughs more consistently, it sucks if you bomb, but that's part of comedy. Some crowds absolutely fucking suck. Some venues absolutely fucking suck. The spot in a show has a lot to do with success. Who you follow can partially determine the outcome of your set. Now, that's not to say, if you have a bad set it's not your fault. Sometimes, you suck, and sometimes the crowd/venue/spot sucked and sometimes it's a combination. The key is to not get too high or low.

Anyways, my point is, if you really want to try comedy, and it definitely seems like you are passionate about it, you should give it a try. If you're worried about anxiety, you could take some form of a stand up class to help you get some stage time in a positive environment and/or feedback on your writing/material/angle/performance/persona. I took a class. It helped me a lot. Now, if you take a class, I wouldn't go around telling everyone because some of the younger veterans of the comedy scene are elitist pricks and will perceive you as a chump/loser/wannabe for some reason and be assholes to you. But classes can be a good way to get started.

I don't know if you know who Bo Burhnam is (if not youtube him, and he was in Funny People), but I took the same class as he took. The class doesn't make you a great comedian out of nowhere, but it points you in the right direction and helps you get your feet wet.

Point very well taken, and considered. In addition to my own general anxiety/stage fright, I'm also a bit nervous about the prospect of y'know, me being the "funny guy" in my group of friends and that not exactly translating. But y'know? You're right. You never know until you try...I've been writing some material here and there, and come up with what I think are some interesting/different concepts. Just because. Haha.

I'll do a bit of research on a stand-up class, I think. I've actually taken a peek at a few "how to" type stand-up comedy things and was fairly disgusted by them (i.e., "Don't EVER mock a woman who is heckling you!") but your point about the class is a good one. Just as a means to get your feet wet and all that.

...And I do know Bo Burnham! I'm actually a big fan. I've heard rumblings that his newer stuff is more actual stand-up than music, too. Which I'm taking as a good thing.

I've never done stand up, but I took a computer class for the easy A and for the final we had to do a power point. And I did it about my dog and filled it with jokes. And I just fucking bombed. Like no laughs at all.

But in my defense, everybody else that I showed it to loved it.

He's said in interviews that he starts from scratch after every special. He'll spend a year or so developing material on the road, then record a special and never use any of that material again after it's done. Then starts all over again with new stuff. Makes it even more crazy that his stuff is still so consistently solid. Also, it's nice to know that you're going to get to hear all new stuff every time you see him.

WTF is my favorite podcast ever. Hah. Maron is a whole different breed from Louis. An angrier, older, more volatile breed. Haha. Maron's style is also a bit on a different tip when he performs live.

Louis's sets tend to be fairly rigid by the time he does a theater tour, I think (I say "think" because I've never seen him in a smaller club, working out newer material). More or less, same here. I listen to select episodes with guests I love.

I like him elsewhere, though, I must admit. He was great on Comedy Film Nerds (http://comedyfilmnerds.com/) last week.

I'm 3 episodes behind on CFN, so I have yet to listen to it.

Speaking of Comedy Film Nerds, has anyone checked out Graham Elwood's stand-up? It's enjoyable, but nowhere near as entertaining as he is on various podcasts.

The reason why I like Nerdist so much is because it's like WTF but Hardwick is the complete opposite of Maron while staying in the same style. He does the same stuff like getting into the psyche of a comedian, gets them to talk about juicy shit without it being confrontational, etc. The episode w/ Drew Carey is amazing in that sense.

I like WTF cuz it's like looking into the comedian's mind. You can see how their jokes come about and what makes them tick. It's two comedians discussing comedy from a comedian's point of view (most uses of comedy in a sentence ever?). I've only watched comedians from the audience, so it's like looking to the other side.

He seems like he's trying too hard to be self-deprecating.

That's the big draw for me -- insight into the comedian's mind. In fact, when I first started listening to the podcast? I would skip his little "monologue" bits and go right for the interview. But eventually, I came around and gave it a listen--and grew to love it.

I honestly don't consider his material to be "self-depricating," simply because he's so unapologetic about it. And a lot of it seems to be more just him exorcising his demons, sorting things out for himself, etc. And I have to say: I can fully relate to that. I really think that--more than most comics--he appeals to a specific, niche demographic of people. I don't know what that niche is necessarily, but I relate to it on a different level.

That being said, I can fully get how somebody might not like it--and might even hate it. It's uncomfortable, it gets awkward, and he's a fuckin' weirdo...But I love it. Haha.

Now. Enough with the serious talk about comedy. Let's all get back to jerking off Nick Swardson for telling the same fart jokes two albums in a row!

I love The Comedian's Got a Boo Boo, but he definitely isn't as good as he is on podcasts. He's insanely entertaining live, though, I must admit. Love Graham.

It's fucking great. Like, 35 episodes by now or something and I have happily been on board since episode 1 for the first time, like, ever, haha.

Jonah Ray and Matt Mira co-host and they're fantastic.

I saw him and Doug at a 4:20 matinée show, and he was much better then on album.

His fog machine story on NNF kills me every fucking time I hear it.

For sure. Speaking of the Ace man, I could probably count the times I've listened to his podcast since it's inception on two hands. I absolutely loved the radio show, but the podcast just kinda bored me from week one.

I'm usually not a big impressions person, but if SNL really did hire this guy (it's just a rumor at this point), they got a gem. Love some Jay Pharoah.

Watched it earlier today. Love that movie so much.

Donald Glover is awesome. I even like Childish Gambino, he's got an annoying rapping voice...but some of it's really catchy.

Bobby Moynihan stole the show, IMO.
At least aside from Glover
