Who do you think are the most overrated bands? This is kind of tongue in cheek and you shouldn't take it too seriously but go ahead!

I've found that, if a band has a beard and cites Neutral Milk Hotel as an influence, they'll be hailed by AP.net as the second coming of Jesus' Super Special Wacky Rock Godera Opera, so all those bands.
The Breeders. If you loved Indie-esque music (ambiguity of the umbrella term aside) in the early '90s, you love The Breeders, and hey, they were (oh, apparently, they're back together, so "are") a good band and Kim Deal proved with this band that she did have quite a bit to do with the quality of the Pixies, but they were not the Pixies, they weren't as good as the Pixies and the fact that they're consistently compared to Deal's former band and unable to transcend the consistent barrage of comparisons to the Pixies is a testament to the fact that they weren't the band every obnoxious faux-hipster from the early '90s claims them to be. Seriously. Ask any early-to-mid '30something working in a record store what they think of The Breeders. "Saviors of the '90s, man."

that's almost a separate issue i reckon. back then a band had to rely on mainstream radio play & live gigs, & obviously fans had to largely rely on radio to hear new music. but times & technology have changed, you no longer have to be a large mainstream act to have a large following &/or be influential & important. if no band in the mainstream tops their figures, it doesn't necessary mean they don't stack up

yeah but still 60s radio music is infinitely better than the radio music of today on all fronts, and the beatles are a huge part of the reason why. heck the stuff on today isnt even catchy anymore because it all sounds the fucking same, nothing strikes your ear or stands out, the 90s were a lot better as well.

i too can't stand brand new & in terms of ap, definitely overrated to the fullest extent of the definition. but overrated in general? does anyone, besides ap & a couple alike sites, actually rate that band?
(genuine question, i have no idea)

well... yea perhaps, but keep in mind, people only remember what they want to remember from every era. there was still some absolute crap from the 60's & 90's mate. also, i don't think that many bands really focus, primarily, on getting mainstream radio play anymore. not the extent of the 60's anyhow. technology (for better or worse) has seen large shifts away from that era of musical promotion. depends on which factors you wish to include when deciding which band surpassing which. the real power of live performance is something many people forget on ap for some reason

While I do feel that the Beatles get a lot of their fame because they were first - something Oasis hasn't come to grips with - they're still fucking incredible. That's for damn sure. First or not, they're rock gods.
Oh, and I agree with the whole changing media thing. It's definitely not needed any more. My dad always asks me why a certain band I listen to still hasn't made the radio despite talent. I always simply reply that it's because you don't need radio to make it these days. Purevolume, Myspace, and Youtube are proving just as viable. Panic at the disco proves this, if nothing else. They made radio thanks to Myspace.

i dont know why but most of the time the arguments dont have ot specifically be about brand new, its more like they're used as an example vehicle for point counterpoint dicussions about the integrity of writing certain types of music, the technicalities of the songwriting process, and/or the philosophy of a band moving in a completely different direction and adding new dynamics to their music.

these are only initial assumptions applied to unexplained statements about the band. but then either you mediate and discuss it, and understand each others' points, and realize that the other person is not a fanboy/hater, or you argue about it in an ignorant angry insulting fashion and continue to assume they are.

well the reason for it is because bands like that are scene bands that have more substance than most. scene-oriented kids respect them for this but others still criticize them mostly because they're part of the scene and their music shows it. this is why they become such focal points becuase its basically the bridge between tatecore and the outside music world.

how exactly is Nirvana overrated?
i barely hear anything good about them from anyone over the age of 17.
This is a statement people make to sound indie.
For me, it is just that I know a lot of people who treat Kurt Cobain like some people on here treat Jesse Lacey. While Kobain is probably marginally more deserving of this treatment than Lacey, it still annoys me. I also don't like their lyrics, or his voice. Their music always sounds very sloppy to me, I just don't care for it.

I have to agree with all the people who said Brand New. I downloaded their most recent album because of the hype, and while it wasn't bad, I just didn't hear anything that made it stand out. All I ever hear is how creative and innovative they are and how they're changing music and yada yada yada, but I just don't see it. They sound like every other scene type band who got bored with every song sounding the same and started to change things up a little. Not horrible, but nothing to freak out over either.
As for Nirvana, those of you who think it's bad now should've been an up and coming guitarist in the early 90's. I used to subscribe to Guitar World and Guitar For The Practicing Musician (which I don't think even exists anymore?) back when I first started playing... one day it was all these shred guys like Vai and Satriani on the cover and stories about SRV and Hendrix and stuff, and the next day everything was Cobain. He was on the cover of some guitar magazine every few months, there were countless tabs and lessons for Nirvana songs, all everyone talked about was how he was revolutionizing guitar. It was completely insane. I mean, sure, I give them credit for changing the musical climate and changing peoples' and labels' minds about what it meant to be a rock band... but come on, let's be honest here - the guy was an average guitarist at best. If you've been playing a year you can figure out any Nirvana song no problem. He was a great songwriter, and obviously it requires talent to write something regardless of how minimalistic or simple it is, and he deserved recognition for his writing. But there's absolutely no reason someone of such average playing abilities should be on the front of a guitar magazine and have people dissecting his riffs and solos and whatnot. That's like putting The Ramones on the cover or a lesson about Sonic Youth. Oh wait, Guitar world did both of those. Nevermind :-p
To add to the whole Beatles side discussion going on here, I'd just like to say that Sgt. Peppers is probably my LEAST favorite of their later albums. A few of their best songs, some good production ideas, but I just can't listen to it more than about once a year. Revolver, The White Album, Magical Mystery Tour, and Abbey Road ALL shit all over it. The only later album that even compares to it quiality wise is Let It Be. The Beatles are one of my favorite bands and even my least favorite album by them is still something I love with all my heart, but I have never been able to comprehend the amount of praise that Sgt. Peppers gets in most circles.
As for my pick for most overrated band, I'm gonna go with Arcade Fire. The first album was pretty good, but not really life changing like the Pitchfork kids made it out to be. Neon Bible was a complete snoozefest. No hooks, no dynamics, shitty production, it's just boring and bloated and completely uninteresting in every way. Yet everyone acted like it was the second coming or something. I like the artwork way more than the music, I'd rather just look at the damn thing then listen to it again.

The Strokes were consistently blown by the mainstream music press leading into their debut album in 2001, and subsequently touted as "saviors of rock and roll." Read the Rolling Stone review of Is This It, in which, in so many words, the reviewer labels this album as one of the watershed works in contemporary music. So much hyperbole behind what amounted to a solid Garage Rock Revivalist band. They weren't even the best band to emerge from this mainstream fad genre (that would go to Black Lips). It's always fun to read what [insert huge A-List celebrity here] is listening to, and for about three years, they would go into length about how they just got into the Strokes and how cool they are.
Enjoyable? Sure. Anything more? No.

You can't name a band that wasn't influenced in some way by a classic rock band (Beatles, Dylan, Zep, Floyd, Who etc.). Anyone who calls one of those bands overrated is just silly. Overrated music fades.
Anyway, overrated bands: Thrice although my thinking they're overrated is probably just due to the AP disease that forces one to think either Say Anything, Brand New, or Thrice are overrated while loving one of the other two religiously.

They're extremely accessible, non-threatening and not necessarily thought-provoking or challenging "indie pop" that any mainstream listener has on their iPod to tell their friends "I'm into everything, check out this indie stuff I have here. A little Death Cab." They're the indie band for people who don't like and/or get indie music, and as a result, they blow them up to monumental proportions when, in actuality, they're a pretty simplistic band (not a band thing, per se', but not a band that merits the praise they receive).

any band that does something a little more quirky than usual pop or rock and gets mainstream attention ends up getting a lot of praise for it. they are amazing at what they do i mean to be fair i dont think they ever tried to break any boundaries, they just embraced their own writing voice and made catchy songs with it

But I haven't paid enough attention to the hype to get annoyed by it, so I wouldn't say I hate Brand New, they just do absolutely nothing for me. But I could definitely see someone who reads this forum religiously for years absolutely hating them.
yeah the BN hype probably would have got to me if they werent arleady my favorite band before i noticed the hype. i hate hype. hence why i havent seen the dark knight.

You can't name a band that wasn't influenced in some way by a classic rock band (Beatles, Dylan, Zep, Floyd, Who etc.). Anyone who calls one of those bands overrated is just silly. Overrated music fades.
Anyway, overrated bands: Thrice although my thinking they're overrated is probably just due to the AP disease that forces one to think either Say Anything, Brand New, or Thrice are overrated while loving one of the other two religiously.
hahah i love all three religiously, they comprise my top 3 on last.fm as a matter of fact. theres only the fact that only one of say anything's releases is deserving of that position, theyve yet to impress me elsewhere, and if the new album doesnt then they probably will lose prominence on my scale of favorites.

any band that does something a little more quirky than usual pop or rock and gets mainstream attention ends up getting a lot of praise for it. they are amazing at what they do i mean to be fair i dont think they ever tried to break any boundaries, they just embraced their own writing voice and made catchy songs with it
Wait, why are you inserting things into my post?
Who said they were intending to "break boundaries" or they weren't good at making Pop Music? As I said, making Pop Music isn't inherently bad, they're just not worthy of the praise they get. They're fun, simplistic pop. Nothing more, nothing less. Nobody here said "they're overrated because they don't break boundaries." They're overrated because the people praising them to no end think they're something they aren't.

my mistake.
though i do disagree with you in one small place -- the atmosphere and production of transatlanticism was somethin' else, i believe with the work chris walla did at least on that album, they deserve to be lauded as a band with at least slightly more depth than just "simplistic pop". still simplistic, yeah, still very poppy, yeah, but that doesnt quite seem to be doing them justice in that case. i dont know its probably just me.
