They're like Lucero, only slightly closer to the "country" side than the "alt" side haha. But it's not like, stupid country, so it's all good.

Umm, I think their latest, Brighter Than Creation's Dark is pretty good, but it's long too, like, 19 songs haha. If not that one, then The Dirty South is rockin' too.
edit: Southern Rock Opera is also a good choice.

Most definitely. It's easily my favorite DBT album, followed by Decoration Day. I think Southern Rock Opera is third for me, even though it seems to be most peoples's favorite. But yeah, TDS rules. "Tornadoes", "The Boys From Alabama", "The Day John Henry Died", "Carl Perkins' Cadillac"...all incredible songs.

New York, NY—ATO Records is pleased to announce the signing of Drive-By Truckers and their label debut, The Big To-Do. The album, which will be the band’s tenth in their thirteen-year career, is scheduled to be released March 16, 2010. The Big To-Do features thirteen new tracks from the Drive-By Truckers and was produced by their long time producer, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). “It’s very much a rock album,” says Patterson Hood of the Trucker’s upcoming release. “Very melodic and more rocking than anything we’ve done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera.”
The inspiration for The Big To-Do came to the band during their time on the road. “We’ve often set our songs and albums in different periods of time, but this one finds us directly in our present. Riding all through the highways of America (and Europe) trying to make sense of a very different world than the one we grew up in,” says Hood. “I don’t write a lot of songs on the road, but I did more than usual on this album and many more were inspired by or set there, either in a literal sense or something I witnessed or heard about while I was out there.”
Hood and Mike Cooley continue to be the chief songwriters of the group, continuing a musical partnership that has lasted over twenty-three years. Bassist, Shonna Tucker, flexes her songwriting muscles once again by contributing two original songs to the album. Brad Morgan (drums), John Neff (guitar/pedal steel) and Jay Gonzalez (keyboards) round out the current Drive-By Truckers lineup.
The band recently backed legendary R&B musician, Booker T. Jones, on his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album, Potato Hole. The album is nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
The Drive-By Truckers will be hitting the road at the beginning of the new year. A full tour supporting The Big To-Do will be announced in early 2010.
The Big To-Do Track Listing:
1. Daddy Learned to Fly
2. The Fourth Night of My Drinking

Patterson Hood's favorites of '09
Patterson Hood - Drive-By Truckers
Albums
Patterson Hood
1. Bloodkin - Baby They Told Us We Would Rise Again
On the surface, no frills, meat and potatoes rock (and damn proud of it) but a closer listen reveals the finest songwriting all year as this 24-year-old band sings the horrifying tale of their trip back from the abyss and sees it through to a joyous life-affirming conclusion. It's like that Leaving Las Vegas movie with a happy ending - unbelievable if weren't true. Such well-treaded territory would suck if not for the magnificence of its execution. "Wild Rhododendrons" is the finest songwriting I've seen all year, and "The Viper" and "Heavy With Child" are just as good. Meanwhile "Easter Eggs" is the best song of man love I've ever heard (including "Bobby Jean" and "Angie").
2. Bob Dylan - Together Through Life
3. Iron And Wine - Around The Well
4. PJ Harvey and John Parish - A Woman A Man Walked By
5. Girls - Album
6. M. Ward - Hold Time
7. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
8. The Dexateens - Singlewide
9. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
10. The Low Anthem - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin
I just recently caught up with 9 and 10 and they could well move up in coming months. I'm sure there's several albums lurking out there that I will love just as much that I haven't found yet. I'm always looking and listening so I'm sure the list will change up until next year's.
-Best Reissue(s): The Jesus Lizard Reissues
-Favorite Song: "Wild Rhododendrons" (Bloodkin)
-Favorite Tracks: "Black Hearted Love" (PJ Harvey and John Parish) / "Belated Promise Ring" (Iron and Wine)
-Favorite Live Performance: Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings / Iron and Wine at No Depression Festival in Seattle this summer
-Movies I've Loved: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up, A Serious Man, Where The Wild Things Are, Let The Right One In, Inglourious Basterds

But I'm still workin' at The Wal Mart and Mary Alice, in the ground
And all them politicians, they all lyin' sacks of shit
They say better days upon us but I'm sucking left hind tit
And the preacher on the TV says it ain't too late for me
But I bet he drives a Cadillac and I'm broke with some hungry mouths to feed

That live performance is pretty rad. Read an interview with Patterson earlier, this part was news to me:
What can you tell us about the new album, A Big To Do? Will it be a change in direction, or what are your main influences for it?
PH: It's very much a Rock album. Very melodic and more Rocking than anything since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera. We're very proud of it. We actually recorded two complete opposite albums this year. The second one will come out sometime later. It's called Go-Go Boots and is what we affectionately refer to as our R&B Murder Ballad album.
Should be interesting.

Review's up on Pitchfork, 7.4
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13993-the-big-to-do/
On the whole, it's a pretty fair treatment, although I personally would have rated it a little higher. I agree with the reviewer's sentiments that the album fizzles out a bit at the end, and also that Cooley needs more of a presence. But I disagree with his comments on "This Fucking Job" and "After the Scene Dies," just cause I love both of those tunes so much.

Pitchfork isn't without its problems, but I think it's the best review site out there, in general. Them and AllMusic are pretty much the only ones I give any credit to, even if I don't always agree with them. Alternative Press is a joke, same with Rolling Stone and Spin. Punknews is too amateur and disorganized (which fits the aesthetic of the site, but whatever), and this place...well I enjoy the forums, but I've never been big on the reviews here. But that's just me.
In any case, I'm still listening to this album frequently and it is still awesome. :-)

AllMusic is the only one I really like as far as reviews go. There's good reviews here too but there's also some really not-so-good ones. AllMusic however is usually pretty reliable, though I don't always agree with them. I just don't care for Pitchfork since it's so focused on a genre of music that I'm not into, even if there are artists well-reviewed there that I like. (DBT, Tom Waits, The Hold Steady etc). I agree that AltPress, Rolling Stone and Spin are terrible though. Punknews reports about alot of bands/albums I care about but the reviews themselves are usually not very good.

YOUR WOMAN IS A LIVIN' THING
Like the Bald Eagle and Healthcare Reform we almost let it get away before pulling out the stops and saving them in the nick of time.
The Bald Eagle has returned in fine form, but independent record stores are STILL an endangered species.
Every year more and more of these precious national resources are shuttered and closed.
Just last month I heard that one of my favorites is in dire straits.
This year we will be releasing a very special single for Record Store Day, but first let me take you back in time to January of 2009.
Bush was still in the White House and Sully was an anonymous pilot working his job. Drive-By Truckers were toiling away in the studio beginning what would become their 10th album. One night a strange alignment of stars interacted with the perfect chemical component setting off a chain reaction of events, fitfully captured on 2" magnetic tape stock as the wily Producer handed over a vintage handheld microphone to a celebratory Mike Cooley during the playback of a new instrumental Shonna Tucker composition which said band had just duly nailed in a fit of R&B perfection never beheld before and WHALAH!!!
Almost everyone in that room knew that magic had just occurred. A stream of conscious wallop of redneck beat poetry, A channeling of the early morning rant of a Georgia taxi driver concerning the closing of another local industry into a form both compelling and idyllic in its inspiration, articulation and execution.
YOUR WOMAN IS A LIVIN' THING became nearly everyone in the band's favorite song of the 30+ songs we recorded last year. Would it go on The Big To-Do or perhaps be the fitting end to Go-Go Boots?
"Neither," said Mike Cooley.
"No one will ever hear it but us. It's for us and us only".
But Goddamn, Cooley!
"NO".
Months of negotiation (much like healthcare) but the stubborn NO held until...
An eleventh hour compromise:
See, Cooley loves Record Stores too.
He deemed that YOUR WOMAN IS A LIVIN' THING be released on vinyl and vinyl only to independent record stores to celebrate that most special of nationally recognized days.
He was so excited, he even went home and wrote and recorded a B-Side (JUST MAYBE) just for the occasion.
DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS are Proud to Announce the release of our Exclusive Record Store Day Limited Edition Single Release of YOUR WOMAN IS A LIVIN' THING / JUST MAYBE

So...a question for all you DBT fans out there. Of the band's songwriters, past and present (Hood, Cooley, Malone, Isbell and Tucker) who is your favorite?
CellarGhosts
01/13/11, 10:08 AM
Isbell's always been my favorite. Cooley runs a close second.
Chris92
01/13/11, 10:15 AM
Hm...Hood has been my traditional favorite. Songs like "The Righteous Path," "Let There Be Rock," "Lookout Mountain," "Sink Hole" and "Puttin People on the Moon" were my favorite DBT songs for a long time. Recently though, I've been liking Isbell's work with DBT more and more. "Outfit," "Decoration Day," "The Day John Henry Died" and "Where the Devil Don't Stay" are reason enough to choose him. My favorite Cooley songs are "72 (This Highway's Mean)" and "Carl Perkins' Cadillac," the latter of which might be the finest song the band has ever recorded. So I guess I don't have a favorite, haha. I kind of just wanted to see what everyone else thought.
CellarGhosts
01/13/11, 10:21 AM
"Carl Perkins..." is my favorite DBT song so I'm inclined to agree with you on that one. Haha. "The Day John Henry Died" is my second favorite. Both of which have a lot to do with why The Dirty South's always been my favorite record of theirs.
To be honest I've kind of fallen off of them as of late though. I haven't listened to them in a long time for some reason. Guess I'll fix that by checking out the new album.
StreetSpirit76
01/17/11, 01:07 PM
Hood has written some of my favorite songs of theirs ("George Jones'...", "Puttin' People on the Moon", "Righteous Path", etc.) but I also think he's generally the weaker songwriter of the three main guys (well, two now). Cooley's songs are pretty much uniformly awesome and Isbell never put out a less than excellent song when he was with them, so I could go either way there. If I had to choose I'd probably go for Cooley though.

I'm going to have to disagree with this. "The Righteous Path" is one of the best songs, well...ever in my opinion. I think it may seem that Cooley is better than Hood just because Cooley writes less songs? I mean, I'm not knocking Cooley by any means, but saying that there's "no doubt" that Hood isn't as good as Cooley doesn't seem fair to me.
In other news, I'm listening to Go-Go Boots for the first time and I'm really liking this new style. Some real gems on here.

patterson writes more songs, but he has duds in there. sure cooley doesn't write as much, but his batting average is higher.

Isbell joined the band on stage in Space City the other night for the first time in four years.

Isbell rejoining was my first thought, too. Fingers crossed that it happens. And even if he doesn't, they need a third voice in there to mix things up. Especially if Cooley keeps eking out just a few songs per record like he has been.

Sad to see Shonna leave the band, she had a fun energy when I saw them live. Not their best songwriter by any means, but it was nice to have a 3rd voice in between Hood and Cooley.
I would love if it Isbell came back, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hasn't that more or less always been Cooley's motif? Granted, his efforts aren't as strong as they used to be, but I don't think the quantity has diminished.
One way or another though, I agree they need a third voice. The band is becoming a little too much of The Patterson Hood Show. Fingers crossed for Isbell, but I doubt it'll happen.

I have a problem. Whenever I listen to DBT, I have trouble listening to anything but them (and Isbell's solo work) for about a month or so.

And you could come to me by plane, but that wouldn't be the same as that ol' motel room in Texarkana was. So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you've got to kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love.

Yep, you're right. Just seems like he's writing less because Patterson is becoming more prominent. Hope they get a third songwriter before the next record.

Seriously, how are they not the biggest band in the world?

I love their name, but I don't think it does them any favors. Most people just laugh at me when I say it.
And a lot of people I know have an automatic bias against anything southern/country, which is just stupid. It's their loss.

Confession: I've become a huge Isbell fanboy :-d All of his work both with the Truckers and post- just blows me away.
Which isn't taking anything away from Cooley or Hood, they're both fantastic as well. In fact I feel like a Cooley solo album would be pretty fucking sweet at some point.

Isbell is the melodic genius, Cooley is the lyric genius, and Hood is the storytelling genius. But they've all contributed some of my all-time favorite songs, so it's hard to pick favorites. Though I do think Patterson tends to be the weakest link, just because he's more prolific and thus has more of a tendency to miss. And "You and Your Crystal Meth" is probably the only song of theirs I actively dislike, so there's that.
I would love to see Cooley go solo for a bit and put out an old school country record, I just don't think he writes enough songs annually to justify it.

first time I saw DBT is when they opened for the black crowes. 2nd times was at bonnaroo. "THIS IS YOUR EARLZY MORNING MOTHER FUCKING WAKEUP CALL" is what I remember

Yeah Isbell's songs get stuck in your head like nobody's business, even the lesser ones (like "Easy on Yourself," say). There's certainly a lot more to his songs than just the melody though, especially on songs like "TVA" or "Outfit" or "Dress Blues." I really think he's come into his own as a songwriter even more since his exit from the Truckers as well.
Cooley's biggest strength is lyrics, I will agree, but I think Cooley writes fantastic melodies too though-- the chorus of "A Ghost to Most" for example. Hood has a (very) few duds and the occasional so-so song, sure, but I'll take those as long as we keep getting songs like "The Righteous Path," "Fourth Night of My Drinking," "Sink Hole," "People on the Moon," etc. etc.
Anyway, the fact that this band got all three of these songwriters together for a few years is just immeasurably unfair when you think about it haha. No complaints here though.
