Wolverine has a Director

Fox has (finally) signed a director for their upcoming Wolverine spin-off, and the lucky helmer is ... Gavin Hood, whom you might know from the South African film Tsotsi.

Hey, the movie won Best Foreign Film at the '06 Oscars, so the guy clearly has some skills. But what else was it that made the Fox brass take notice? Apparently it's Mr. Hood's Rendition, a New Line political drama that stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Sarsgaard, and Meryl Streep. (That movie opens on October 19th.)

For the Wolverine fans who are still skeptical, you can take solace in the fact that not only does leading man Hugh Jackman approve of the decision -- you can bet he was involved in the entire process. Here's what he told Variety: "I have long been a fan of Gavin's work and know he will make a masterful film with the character intensity and action beats the fans expect."

Production on Wolverine (which was adapted from the comics by David Benioff) begins in November.

The funny part about that is that they wanted Russell Crowe originally. Glad Jackman got it in the end.

Hugh Jackman is just too...pretty. But then again, I read the comics, so maybe that's why my opinion differs.

In theory your right, but sometimes acting ability and marketability outweigh comic purity. A big reason why the X-Men movies played well with the general public was because of Hugh Jackman's ability to bring in the ladies. I'm sure they preferred his body to some runt, no offense to runts.

Very true. No comic book movie has ever been marketed to the very small comic reading elite, anyway. It'd be studio suicide. I'm not too mad about it.

It's funny how people are still upset over the fact they didn't actually cast an actor who was 5'3". Come on guys, Wolverine is too small in the comics. Unrealistically small even. Jackman is perfect.

for all you gambit fans :)

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=22026+

Superherohype is reporting that Taylor Kitsch (TV's Friday Night Lights) has been cast as Gambit in the forthcoming Wolverine movie, confirming months of rumours that the character will make an appearance.

Kitsch has apparently signed a three picture deal, which would suggest that Gambit, a mutant with the power to make objects explosive by charging them with kinetic energy, will play a major role, but could mean that Fox is merely hedging its bets.

It's been a long wait to see Gambit in a X-Men movie, who's been rumoured since the first film was announced. We're a little disappointed that Lost's Josh Holloway won't be playing the role, because he would have been perfect casting, but we can't wait to see him and his explosive playing cards on screen.

In other Wolverine news, Aintitcool (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35658) is repeating the long circulating rumour that Ryan Reynolds will cameo in the movie as Deadpool, a lesser know smart-ass mercenary character. As we said, the story's been doing the rounds for a while, but AICN says they have it confirmed. This would be fantastic casting.

Take every comedic "smartass" role Ryan Reynolds has done and then double the sheer badassery of him in Blade: Trinity and Smokin Aces and you have Deadpool

Ah don't get me started on the X-Men trilogy. Although I didn't love them, I did watch them with the lowest of expectations and ended up liking them (except for the piece of shit known as X3). I really hope they remain faithful to the Deadpool costume and don't try to modernize it.

That's my question too. Especially considering how a significant portion is supposed to take place in Japan, and only Sabertooth ever gets involved in that part of his life. I'm still upset about Huston getting Stryker over Michael C. Hall, but its still a pretty good casting. Huston is a fine actor. Will.I.Am is frustrating, but whatever. And I wanted Michelle Monaghan in there instead of Lynn Collins.

But I love Dom as Beak. That's a good call, even if he is older.
What if Wolverine is only in it for like fifteen minutes.

So the Wolverine would be the EXACT inverse of comic Wolverine.

Edit: It just occurred to me people may not get that joke. Marvel puts Wolverine in everything because he's really popular. Some would say the market is oversaturated with Wolverine appearances.

Yeah, that was the biggest complaint I had too. As a whole, Cyclops was underused in those films.

Cyclops was used so little in the movies seeing how he was the most dominate speaker in the cartoon in the 90s.

He was always in the story lines too.

thats because he is THE x-man, he is the character that caries most of the x-books, one of the originals. They tried to make the movies too much about wolverine which was a poor decision, They should gave him his own movie sooner

---

"20th Century Fox offered a special treat today for fans attending the studio's movies presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con with a first look at next year's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, complete with an appearance by Logan himself, star Hugh Jackman.

The Gavin Hood-directed spin-off recounts Wolverine's exploits before he joined the X-Men. The prequel stars Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed (a.k.a. Sabretooth), Danny Huston as William Stryker, Dominic Monaghan as Beak, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Taylor Kitsch as Gambit, and Will.i.am as Wraith.

Jackman surprised the crowd with his "unscheduled" appearance, telling the fans that the movie had literally just wrapped filming and thanking them for all the success he's had thanks to Wolverine. He then came down off the stage to meet Wolverine creator Len Wein and shake his hand.

Jackman then presented "bad ass" exclusive full of "beserker rage" footage from the movie, which he also produced. And we can confirm that it was indeed bad ass.

The trailer-like sequence opens with Logan and Creed in a military prison cell where they survived execution by firing squad for decapitating a senior officer. They are met by Colonel William Stryker, who offers them a chance to serve their country by taking part in the Weapon X program. We then saw glimpses of the team's different members: Blob, Deadpool. Wraith and, in perhaps the biggest mass geekgasm Hall H has ever heard, Gambit.

We then see Logan in the tank where he undergoes the adamantium process, awakening in a beserker rage and slashing down a number of guards. Stryker then calls on Creed, clad in a black trenchcoat and black outfit, to hunt down his old Army buddy Logan. You can imagine how that turns out.

The footage showed Gambit tossing his trademark cards and riding a motorcycle. There was plenty of shots from a chase sequence between Wolverine on a motorcycle, Army trucks and a helicopter. The wartime sequences appear to be set in the Vietnam era, with the New Zealand countryside doubling for Southeast Asia.

Jackman, who had just gotten off a plane from Australia, did not take any questions but thanked the fans profusely for all they've done for his career."

Let me clarify. I DO like Gambit(and while I called him a weaksauce Wolverine, i just mean storyline wise, and attitude wise). But I just think he's an odd favorite. Like, people were getting really pissed off that he wasn't in the movies, and I'm like...well, um, ok. There are already 17,000 people in the movies, and many more characters who deserve it more. The thing all the way to the left looks like this dude I use to know. Not even lying.1.One would need a movie backstory for it to be off. She's just THERE. But the asian thing isn't so bad. Psylocke is so convoluted, it's hard to keep it straight. She was an English lady(Captain Britain's sister), who had her body switched with that of a Japanese ninja assassin lady known as Kwannon. Kwannon shows up to the mansion one day, and guess what? She has the legacy virus. So Psylocke can't get her body back, and Kwannon dies.

And she was controlled by Sebastien Shaw for a while. I don't know.

Exactly, it wasn't even necessary for him to die. Like it maybe would've been cool if he sacrificed himself to save Jean or someone else, but to just die like that in the beginning was incredibly dumb. Sucks even more since he was always my favorite X-men character.

First of all, I'm not an idiot and know quite a bit about the X-Men.

Have you even finished the film and watched what's after the credits, boof?

Also, why are we putting spoiler warnings on a film that came out like two years ago?

You can't kill off James Marsden!
From what I recall from the X-Men series, usually Cyclops is the only person who can bring Phoenix back to Jean. So there's no *fucking* way she'd kill him. Why did he have to die? It makes no effing sense to me. Why was he such a whiny bitch all of a sudden too? A bunch of Cyc haters on the writing team, I swear

I won't watch that trilogy at all....it's dead to me.

I love Cyclops and I do know that they wrote him out so Marsden could do Superman Returns which sucks, and yes, I still don't see the need to kill this character off. He's the leader of the X-Men. But the films never really went that route with the character so I guess it kind of makes sense.

I just figured if they did another sequel, they would find a way to bring him back. They have to.

Eh. I figure a tv show as a weeks grace period before we can post spoilers or talk about it and thats just a courtesy so a movie this old wouldn't matter.

I wouldn't worry about it.

How about they just pretend that trilogy never existed like they did with The Hulk and just keep some of the same cast--Professor X, Jean, Beast, Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde...

I dunno, who did you think was casted well? Please god, don't say Rogue...

I love Hugh Jackman as well as Marsden.

Famke Janssen and Patrick Stewart were great as well. First movie was decent. Second I thought was great and I even liked the third one for the most part.

I'm just glad Singer left to do Superman Returns.

Miss Heartcore

Second was definitely better than the first.

And I liked Hugh as Wolverine too, though he needed more of a growl and accent.

Sean Ashmore is good looking but needed more of a 'tude to be Bobby.

1. Huh? When did I imply you were an idiot?
2. Yeah, I know he's technically "still alive" in someone elses body. But a) the way they killed him off was very stupid b) why the fuck did they kill him off only to bring him back at the end? That was completely idiotic c) if you know quite a bit of X-Men you would also know that when Xavier died in the books, the whole universe was affected and turned to shit. Here, all we got were a few sad X-Men.
3. Out of courtesy to anyone who hasn't seen the film yet who's reading this thread, but I guess it has been a few years. Plus if me spoiling the movie will keep them away from it, then I guess I'll just have to stop using spoiler tags.

It's actually funny. The guy with the no brain functions who Xavier ended up inhabiting? He was originally intended to be X's twin brother.

Yeah.

I'm sure they didn't please the diehards the way Nolan's Batman films have pleased that characters diehards, but the first two X-Men were very solid films. It wasn't until Singer left the franchise that things got bad.

I'm a HUGE Deadpool fan. He's one of my all time favorite characters. I have the majority of all of his series (only missing select issues which I am hunting), so I know his back story pretty well, haha.

All that aside, I think Ryan Reynolds is perfect for Deadpool. He just needs A) the correct attire and B) scarred skin. If he doesn't have that, I'll be very pissed.

My pick to play any superhero is and always will be: James Franco

I think Marvel should just hire him to play in all their shit movies they are trying to churn out. I mean really, it will save them time from having to re-do the Hulk every 5 years because it keeps flopping to horrendous shit to what their market goal plan actually is for it.

You mean the sandman? hahah.

I actually hated the Spiderman trilogy. To me, it was bad CGI, forced dialogue delivery <cough Kirsten Dunst cough> and just a bad script.

I've been reading Ultimate Spiderman and I love the way it's written...pretty much redeemed spiderman for me again.

I agree that James Franco is the man, I just don't think he could be cable.

What about Mickey Rourke for cable or is he too old?

Jackman on Taylor Kitsch as Gambit: "I can say it. He's sexy, right? He's a little bit like a junior Wolverine in a way. He's a little bit of a wise guy. He's an outsider. He's got some issues himself. He's mischievous. He's cheeky. He's a bit of a badass. We have a really great fight sequence. Physically that guy is an animal. He was chucking himself around on the concrete. He has that passion that I remember having when I first did Wolverine. There was no way a stunt double was doing anything for him."
