it still sounds pretty good despite the DTGL similarities. i wish it was more experimental though

Wow....I'm glad it's actually exceeding people's expectations. DFGL was so good, I didn't think they'd be able to top it..maybe they did. We shall see.

You know, Define the Great Line really surprised me, as someone who did not like the band at all up to that point, I instantly became a fan. This review gives me hope that that will continue.

The underoath review is pretty much exactly what I expected, the norma jean one just me think their new release will be even more meh.

How can Underoath be generic emocore ever? Even if emocore were a genre and Underoath it, (neither of which are true statements) Underoath would surely have invented the damn genre and thus could never be a generic representation of it.
Garrett is stoked on this post!

i think the reviewer meant underoath WAS generic emocore.
besides, underoath didn't invent it
Looking forward to hearing it.

I have a feeling this will be a terrible album.

Underoath are not Emocore, but that doesn't matter.
Say Emocore is what Underoath are as a genre then they themselves must surely have invented it. A lot of bands may sound like what Underoath sound like now but they never did when Underoath started on Changing of the Times. That is not to say Underoath are some amazing original band, but they at least found a small niche in between other bands and genres, which bands like TDWP, DDG and others have ripped off.
You cannot be generic when you yourself invented something. Hence why Dashboard Confessional can't be generic because no matter what happens they did the acoustic/pop punk thing before anyone else. The same applies to any band who were the first to do something in music.
I disagree with the generic emo-core statement in this case but there is absolutely no reason why the originator of a sound cannot later become generic if there is no progression in their sound and too many other adopt it.

changing of the times wasn't really emocore. it was more of just... hardcore i guess.
but as far as emocore goes, Beloved more or less did it before underoath on they're only chasing safety. it was more of hardcore sound for Beloved, but they also did a lot to popularize scream/sing patterns

The Beloved would be Post-Hardcore, which is what Underoath is as well.

meh, TOCS is basically just taking Thursday's formula and making it more poppy.

but why on earth should they have to change their sound if they're the originator? besides, progression shouldn't be so drastic anyway.

Korn and deftones? Both originated the Nu-metal sound, Korn needed to progress and instead became generic nu-metal but the deftones progressed enough to escape it, bands should always be evolving their sound. This "emo-core" or whatever, was(is?) dangerously close to becoming the next nu-metal, Underoath have changed in order to avoid that.
