Would you consider these bands to be similar? I think they are.
Of course Unearth is better, but let's not go there.

I saw As I Lay Dying two weeks ago, they were so technical, like you know how some bands may change there sound when there live? AILD didnt do that at all, but since they did that, there wasnt much stage presence. There singer is pretty cool though.
similar in that their music sounds exactly the same or similar in that they can play shows together. they are def same genre to play shows together.

I listen to both of those guys quite a lot, and I can hear the similarities but I don't really care if they sound the same.
They both kick fucking hard ass.

Musical similarities. And no, not if they sound exactly the same. Just similar. Yes? No?

Somewhat, but some of As I Lay Dying's songs seem to be more influenced by bands like Converge.

arent these guys on tour together in August or something? I think thats right... all I know for sure though is their both coming here, Im just not sure if its together... I agree about AILD sounding more influenced by converge.

I don't know about that. Converge sounds awesome to me. AILD sounds like generic shit.

theres no denying converge is awesome, but some of the parts of AILD sounds very converge sounding.. like, whoa, thats something that Converge would have done.

as i lay dying is more hardcore influenced, while unearth is more influenced by the new wave of swedish metal. they sound kind of similar, not really, but who cares? they are two great bands in a specific genre of music and they both fucking kick ass.

honestly, Im getting kind of tired of swedish death metal influencing hardcore. Dont get me wrong, Im all for trying new things, but I just dont like the whole Gothenburg, in flames type of riff and technicnal guitar in every song. Thats totally sweet if you have the chops to play technichal guitar lines, but dont sacrifice songwriting, something that hadcore is known for, great songwriting.

oh and i want to say, a band doesn't have to be original to be great. they have to simply write great songs. both as i lay dying and unearth write great metal songs so they are two great metal bands. not all metalcore has to sound like converge (even though converge is one of my favorite bands). just listen to whatever the fuck sounds enjoyable to you.
sincerely,

haha you are telling this to a person who loves the gothenburg style with all his heart. hehe. that's not all the metal i like though, i listen to a a lot of hardcore, death, and black metal. i never get sick of swedish metal though.

oh and if you want to get technical about it, there are a lot of differences between swedish metal and this kind of american swedish influenced metalcore. the most notable difference is the vocals. also devoid from america's wonderful rehash of this great genre is the synthesizers. don't forget that whole "verses with no guitar just distorted bass"-thing that those wacky swedes do.

thats true about the synthesizers, but I guess Im just one of those people who likes hardcore but doesnt really like metal, especially black or death metal.

what are your thoughts on hardcore dancing?

moshing is ok with me, but hardcore dancing annoys the hell out of me.

metal kids don't hardcore dance. metal kids feel the rock from deep within their soul and this manifests itself as a severe case of whiplash.

its all about hardcore dancing, especially when the whole crowed is into it. its amazing, id rather hardcore dance, then skank or homo punk mosh.

I pretty much agree with boysdontcry on practically all they've said.

I don't mean that they sound like Converge exactly, but they sound like a band trying to sound like Converge. Some of their songs have more of a chaotic feel, instead of the melodic riffing of Unearth.

i honestly dont think as i lay dying sounds like converge (or a band trying to sound like converge). sure some of the songs are more chaotic than others, but they still don't sound like converge to me. plus AILD has more melodic riffing than unearth does.

I don't think so, more(almost all) of Unearth's songs are based around melodic riffing, some parts of AILD songs definitely sound like they pulled straight out of the Converge playbook. I had to break out the CD to remember what songs I was specifically referring to, but I was talking about track 5 and track 8.

Unearth is going on tour with Lamb Of God, Atreyu and Everytime I Die while on Ozzfest, kind of like a second show thing I guess you could call it.

Gothenburg is really just another way of saying melodic death metal that's influenced by At The Gates, the band to start that style.
