View Full Version : How long do you drive for shows?

I just decided that this might be interesting.

As a young boy growing up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, typically my only options for shows were going to Salt Lake City, Utah (which is three and a half hours away), or going to Boise, Idaho (which is four hours away). Of course, we had local shows, but I'm talking about shows with bigger, touring bands.

I know that some people living in largely populated areas dont need to drive more than 10 minutes to get to a show, while some people in very rural areas have to drive 4 or more hours to see a certain band play!

How long do you have to drive, on average, to get to a show?

ha first vote! I expected maybe a few more.

None of my friends are willing to drive very far for shows but, I live 20 minutes away from Dallas so, bands usually tend to stop by there.

Well most big shows will either come here or to Richmond, so I never have to drive further than an hour and a half.

I'm in San Luis Obispo, and we will occasionally get some good shows at this one local venue, but not too many. I'd say about 5 that I considered going to in the past year. I have to go to LA or SF for the bigger ones, both of which are about 3.5 hours away.

I'm in Phoenix, AZ so we have huge shows here all the time. They vary from 15-40 minutes depending on where the show is being held. Farthest I've driven was to Tucson, roughly 2.5 hours away

Depends, we get good shows at Starland Ballroom usually, which is like 30 min away, but I've gone to Philly and NYC for shows, which is like 90 mins away.

usually only an hour or so, but i'll be driving the 4+ hours from VT to boston for sigur ros.

depends on the show. i've flown 3000 miles for 3 shows, but i don't know if that counts, considering it says "drive"..so i just put 2-4 because thats the average drive i have.

I've driven 6-7 hours for every show I've been to, and would drive it in a heartbeat for another.

In high school, the most memorable part about going to shows was packing a car full of friends and driving three or more hours for the show. Sing-alongs, midnight rest stop breaks, Chinese fire drills! Priceless!

...I cant decide whether I'm jealous of people who live close to venues or not.

Long Island has plenty of shows and so does State College, so I said 30 minutes or less. If I want to go to NYC, then it's probably more like 30 minutes to an hour. This past June I had to drive to Scranton to see my favorite band, but it was only 2.5 hours, so not too bad. That was the longest I've ever traveled to get to a show though.

I live in a small town in Alabama, so I have to drive 4+ hours to catch bands in Atlanta. The drive is usually great though! Gas is not...

I live in NJ about 15 mins outside NYC - so thats always awesome and very accessible but I do drive 1-2 hours to get to shows farther away in jersey and in phildelphia.

For all the major ones I've been to... I drive up to Portland, or down to Chico/Sacramento/San Francisco. Portland is about 4 hours away and Chico: 3, Sac: 4+, SF: 5+

That's why I do not go to a lot.

Usually 30-45 minutes to get the venues where I live, but I've gone to shows about 4 hours away a few times. I'm actually starting to do that more often now.

I typically drive a half hour to an hour for most shows but sometimes being stuck in the metropolis of south central Connecticut I am forced to make the two to two and a half hour trek to New York City or Boston.

On average, about 30-60 minutes. But sometimes it's 15 minutes and others it's almost a couple hours.

i live in prescott az, so my closest outlet for shows is phoenix (1.5 hours). Although, i have made the drive to vegas (4 hours) for shows and more recently felt obligated to see alkaline trio this summer so i drove to san luis obispo (10 hours) to see them only to find out they indeed are playing phoenix in september but it was a great trip (got to meet derek and danny!) and i now look forward to seeing them in phoenix with NoFx!

my favorite venue which is the only good one in vermont is 4 hours away and i love going there but there are some in new york that are like 1-3 hours away. and some local shows are cool which are only 30m.

80 miles to sacto, and like 160 to the bay. and when i lived in southern oregon, i used to do 300 to portland. can't do that shit anymore with high gas prices, though...

I'm in Raleigh, NC.
We occasionally get big name shows downtown at Walnut Creek..such as Dave Matthews band, etc.
But last Wednesday the Jonas Brothers were there...ew.

But yeah, most of the good shows, you gotta drive down to Charlotte, which is about a 2-3 hour drive.

The closest venue to my house is the Palladium in Worcester MA or the Webster in Hartford CT. I'd say that takes about 45min to an hour to get to the Palladium and 20-30min for the Webster. Problem is I like the Palladium much better.

My farthest trip was 8 hours to see Coheed in Pennsylvania last May. That was good stuff haha.

I'm in Bakersfield, about 2 to 2.5 hours from the LA area, which is where I have to go to catch most tours. We get some stopping through here, but not too many, so I'm usually driving if I want to see anything. Though this September, I'm driving 5 hours to see The Aquabats play with Rancid in San Francisco.

I rarely have to drive more than an hour away for shows. If a tour doesn't come to my city, chances are it comes to san antonio (about an hour away).

about 1-2 hours for me.

billyboatkid

Our venues are 5 - 10min away from me.

Other than that I flew all the way to New Orleans just to see Thrice and Brand New.

usually 1-2. green bay doesn't have a lot of shows, and milwaukee is about an hour 45 away.

oh_heykate.
08/03/08, 08:24 PM
I said 2-4 hours, because that's what it is on average.

The venue I go to most is in Grand Rapids, 45 minutes from my house minimum. Rarely do I go to Lansing which is about 2.5 hours, and Detroit is about 3.5-4 hours. So it really depends what city I'm going to. But if we're talking how much I'm willing to drive... if it's a band I really really like, I'll drive quite a bit to a few cities and make a roadtrip out of it. More fun that way.

Bostancic25
08/03/08, 09:23 PM
1-2 hours

I live about an hour outside of philly, so if there is a concert I'm going to, it's somewhere in the city. It has a lot of venues as well. Though I did drive 7 hours to VA for a concert this year.

Usually around 30 minutes for local venues, up to 3 hours for Orlando shows and 4+for anything else worth going to (Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale etc...)

i live pretty close to pittsburgh so that puts me in the 30min-1 hour categorie but we get skipped pretty frequently so ive been to cleveland which is like 2 hours and buffalo which is i think 3 or 4 hours
but ask any of my friends and they'll tell you i dont drive so swell...so i try to stay at the pgh ones

We haven't had a decent show here in Derby for quite some time now, but Nottingham's only a half hour away. Stoke, Birmingham and Sheffield are all about an hour away and I can be in London, Manchester or Leeds in 2 hours. I guess that's one of the benefits of living right in the centre of the country. No long drives for me, until I go to mainland Europe next year for Pressure Fest or Ieperfest.

I live in Syracuse, NY so we get our fair share of shows here, so I only have to go a few minutes.
But I have been to shows in Rochester and Buffalo, so I have gone a few hours away.
But the furthest was for Bamboozle which was almost 5 hours.
But mostly, it's about 10 minutes.

honestly,i don't drive.
i ride.
but it usually takes my mom about 30 mins. or less to get there...
(she's a crazy driver!!! LOL!!!)
i'm supposed to be going to a My Morning Jacket show and an Underoath show in like another week or 2,and it's downtown...
it shouldn't take us long...

Depends... I think I've seen a majority of shows in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, less than 30 minutes for me. If not there, then Richmond is 1-2 hours away.

I've driven Baltimore, Wilmington, D.C., Harrisonburg Greensboro and a few other places... so we're talking anywhere from 3-6 hours.

Furthest I've driven is 12 hours for Bonnaroo. 8pm-8am, fun drive.

A lot of bands come to ft. lauderdale so I usually only have to drive for about 20 minutes to get to the venues, but on the occasion a band doesn't come down and just stops in orlando (which is a lot) I'll drive almost 4 hours. That's only if it's a band I love though.

In Northern California, I'd drive anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, usually toward the latter. I once drove seven hours and I wouldn't trade that show for anything.

but still.

from where my hometown is, chicago, milwaukee, and des moines are all about 3-ish hours, so usually we went to one of those.
