I give kudos to bands who do that. Case in point: The Early November. They always take out bands they think are good bands, regardless of size. And i love them for that. Heck, they took my band out for a week and we're relatively (who am i kidding, totally) unknown. They rule. I love it when a band is in it for the music and not for the money.
