thoughts?

The Princess and the Frog is an upcoming animated musical feature film currently being produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and based upon the classic fairy tale The Frog Princess. It will be the first traditionally animated (2-D) feature film in Disney's animated features canon since 2004's Home on the Range. When finished, it will take its place as the 48th animated film by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is being directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, directors of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, with songs and score composed by Randy Newman and starring the voice talents of Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, John Goodman, Jenifer Lewis, Angela Bassett and Peter Bartlett. Dreamgirls star Anika Noni Rose is providing the voice for the lead character, Tiana.
The film, which began production under the working title The Frog Princess, will be an American fairy tale musical set in New Orleans during the 1920s Jazz Age, and Tiana will be the first Black Disney Princess.[2]

Release date: December 25, 2009

Yeah I was going to say what others have already said. It looks like they actually tried with the animation this time, hearkening back to the old days before the endless direct to video sequels (i.e. Cinderella 2, The Lion King 2, The Little Mermaid 2, and on and on...)

I'm happy about this. I loved the 2D in the beginning of Enchanted. I'm happy they're reviving it.

Heh, just read this on Wikipedia:

The Heroine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroine) of the movie, who is the first Black American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-american) Disney Princess (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Princess), caused some controversy when she was given what some people perceived as a stereotypically lower-class "black name" "Maddy" and was made a chambermaid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maid), an occupation some felt not in keeping with the image of a Disney Princess.
On April 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_20), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), E! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E%21) reported that the title of the film could possibly be changed from The Frog Princess to The Princess and the Frog, and that the lead character Maddy may be getting a name change as well. [15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Princess_and_the_Frog#cite_note -14)
On May 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_4), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), USA Today (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Today) published an article regarding the film in which they referred to it under the aforementioned title, The Princess and the Frog, and referred to the lead character as "Tiana" rather than Maddy, supporting the earlier reported name change possibilities.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Princess_and_the_Frog#cite_note -15)
On May 8 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_8), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), BET (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BET) and other online sites reported that Disney spokeswoman Heidi Trotta stated that some of the original release information was incorrect, and confirmed the USA Today names "Princess Tiana" and The Princess and the Frog to be correct. Tiana will no longer be a "chamber maid." Trotta stated "Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney’s rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity."[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Princess_and_the_Frog#cite_note -16)

what? cinderella was a fucking slave. and what the hell is wrong with the name Maddy? Jesus Christ, this world needs to stop being so damn politically correct.

That's precisely what I was thinking when I read it. Also, Disney has had plenty of stereotypes in their films so I don't get why suddenly this one is such a huge deal.

Oh, they can do this but still refuse to release Song of the South on DVD over here? I'm calling shenanigans.

But at least I can dress up as a Disney princess now, even if it's about 10 years too late.

I guess Disney is actually looking to release Song of the South on DVD:

Needless to say, Disney was shocked over this racial firestorm especially since the Mouse House is considering re-issuing (http://animatedfilms.suite101.com/article.cfm/song_of_the_south_returns) 1946’s Song of the South on DVD.
SotS, despite being an Oscar-winning movie, has as many detractors as admirers. Some praised the film’s animation and story while others claimed the character of Uncle Remus was pandering to White stereotypes of southern blacks.
Bowing to public pressure, Disney CEO Robert Iger recently softened (http://vintage-animated-films.suite101.com/article.cfm/disney_releases_song_of_the_south) his stance on releasing it on DVD. He asked chairman Dick Cook to determine whether the time was right to return Song of the South to store shelves. He even asked Clements & Musker to create a teaser for The Princess and the Frog to go on the DVD. However, the Mouse House is now frightened that the current controversy will destroy any chance of Song of the South getting a fair shake.
At this point, rumour says the Mouse House is considering a limited run of SotS DVD’s under the Disney Treasures banner to test whether or not the movie will still cause an uproar among the PC brigade.
If the film does well, then Disney may wide-release Song of the South on Blu-Ray. However, there’s no way they want to link this movie to The Princess and the Frog, considering the separate firestorms happening with this movie.

Got that from here:

I just watched the trailer for this, so I wanted to bump this thread. I think this is going to be a really fun film. I love the fact that Disney is giving us a new 2D musical and that it's taking place in New Orleans. That should set the stage for some good blues influenced tracks.

I was pumped to hear that the same writing and directing team that created The Little Mermaid and Aladdin are writing and directing The Princess and The Frog. The Little Mermaid and Aladdin were two classics from the 90's Disney era (The Lion King was my favorite), so it's good to know that the film is in good hands.
