I'd say the new album, Seeing Sounds. It's got some of their catchiest singles from the songs I heard. It's been getting a bunch of new people into 'em too, so it must be pretty accesssible.

umm as a starting point, i'd suggest linton kwesi johnson. he's actually a renowned poet, who has put his poems to dub & reggae music (which features some of the most precise & clever bass work i've ever heard). his poems are either political or social issue related & very strong. his album making history is my favourite, but he has a string of classics

no worries brother, there's plenty of jamaican artists who are soo good. there isn't much (that i've come across yet) in america that interests me. but hopefully, with help of this thread, that'll change. & linton may be a little "different" to what you're used to at the moment, but give it time to warm up. the man's talented

AZ has a new album dropping? Haven't really been checking for him but Doe Or Die and that unforgettable guest appearance are still classic..

News Murs, Clipse and Immortal Tech dropping soon. Semi-looking forward to them... would be far happier if Joe Budden, Saigon, and Grafh dropped their albums but that just isn't happening.

umm as a starting point, i'd suggest linton kwesi johnson. he's actually a renowned poet, who has put his poems to dub & reggae music (which features some of the most precise & clever bass work i've ever heard). his poems are either political or social issue related & very strong. his album making history is my favourite, but he has a string of classics

Thanks a lot for this recc a while ago by the way! The man's music is great.

Never been able to get into hip-hop, where should I start?

Depends really what you like when it comes to music. If you are looking for the purely political or maybe more accessible rappers, then try out The Coup, Murs, Common, De La Soul, Pharoahe Monch, old Outkast, old Goodie Mob, The Roots, etc.

If you don't mind drug references and semi-misogynistic music, then perhaps try out J-Zone, old Scarface, old Nas, Clipse, Kool G Rap, Big L, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon's OB4CL, etc

If you want something just more chilled out and for fun, then listen to Devin Da Dude, Cypress Hill, old The Pharcyde, Slick Rick, Redman, etc

Some classics to start out with would be...

The Coup - Steal this Album
Common - Ressurection
De La Soul - any of their three first
Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs
Outkast - any of the three first
Goodie Mob - any of the first two
The Roots - illadelph halflife
Scarface - The Diary / Mr. Scarface is Back (The Diary is more smooth G-Funk, Mr. Scarface is 80's hardcore rap)
Nas - Illmatic
Kool G Rap - Wanted Dead or Alive
Ghostface - Supreme Clientele
Raekwon - OB4CL
Devin da Dude - Just Tryin Ta' Live
Cypress Hill - self titled
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride (fun album), Labcabincalifornia (more serious album)
Slick Rick - Great Adventures of (my favorite hip hop album of all time bar none.)
Redman - any of his first three.

Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs, Desire

He has such a distinct style of delivery, it's amazing. Great live performance too, especially with his backup singers/band.

It's a shame Internal Affairs got pulled from the shelves (He sampled the horns/track from Godzilla without permission in his song Simon Says...which is still one of the best beats I've ever fucking heard in a song, haha)

Pacewon - Won

Qwell and Meaty Ogre - Freezerburner

Qwellie can rhyme more syllables than Big Daddy Kane could ever hope to and his flow makes Aesop Rock wish he could rap that fast without over-dubs.

Anything Wu Tang. (Ghostface is a metaphorical master and probably one of the best in the game, Raekwon is a gem, RZA has the sickest simple beats you'll hear, ODB is just plain fun). Plus, the clan ain't nothing to fuck with.

Anything Immortal Technique, but especially Rev. Vol 2 (maybe The Third World if you want better production). And no matter what cd you get, get the song "Dance With the Devil" from Rev. Vol. 1. One of the most powerful songs I've ever heard, in any genre.
He's one of the most talented out there. While some of his ideas/thoughts are a little radical, his rhymes are sick and overall his message about poverty, classism, racism, and politics is clear. He's not rapping about "hanging over the wall in the VIP" and "making it rain on them hos", aka Lil Wayne.

Well.. when it comes to favorite artists, I just generally give the stock answers of Nas, Ghostface Killah, 2Pac, and Andre 3000... I can't really say anymore though. Both Nas and Andre 3000 (and most other rappers who I'd call favorite) haven't released an album I thoroughly enjoyed in years.

When it comes to up and comers, I really am not sure anymore. Grafh and Saigon are great when it comes to more "street" rappers, but their debuts will probably never come out. Joe Budden has been putting in a lot of work, and though he did have an album out back in like '01, it has been pure mixtapes with him on the shelf since then. His mixtapes are great, though I much rather have a full length. Check them out if you haven't, all named "Mood Muzik"... he gets at least a bit of respect from most people in internet hip hop circles so he has to be doing something right. Papoose has a pretty big cult following, personally think he's garbage anymore, but he's clever lyrically (or at least used to be. Haven't listened to any of his mixtapes in a bit... he has released a ridiculous amount.)

Saigon is anti gay and im not down with that, plus mother fucker aint ever gonna release and album so fuck em.

If I could just call him my favorite based on guest appearances I would have picked Luda and Jadakiss as my two favorite rappers, but I can't do that. Albums are far more important than guest appearances and I wasn't feeling Stankonia or Idlewild at all.

Buddens only had one album and there were some great tracks in there though it was plagued by filler, so no way you can say that his albums are poop if he's only even released one

i odnt agree with you aobut stankonia but i though budden dropped a new album last year, or was that just MM3? jadakiss is good too but he always raps about guns, all th time. he was on like 3 remixs awhile back with bun b (push it remix, go getta remix and somthing else) and i think they should drop and album together, north and south.

I wouldnt agree with those.

Andre has always been pretty good, but on the last couple albums his flow has been a little week.

His is up there for mainstream hiphop though.

And for Illmatic, It was the best NAS release but I wouldnt consider it a strong release in the hip hop community.

For me it would be.

Really? Illmatic not a strong release? Haven't heard many people say that to be honest.

Never really was a Deck fan outside of the obvious guest appearences like Triumph. His solo albums just never did it for me. He definitely is better than my least favorite Wu member U-God though..

For me NAS has never shown as a big influence to me, Mabye its because I have been more a KRS-One fanboy, but I just dont see NAS as much as a heavy hitter in the Hip Hop world.

inspectah Deck isnt bad at all, Check out the movement, if you need it I could Post it when I get home. He was never a solid hitter in Wu-Tang though and I noticed most people don't give him a solid listen to.

Cee Lo is obvious. I honestly put Goodie Mob's first two albums on the same level as Outkast's first three...

not only did jamaica create the concept of rapping (first known example dating back to '52), but also the art of deejay’ing, remixing, dub & electronic music. & thanks to two of the worlds most famous taxi drivers, sly & robbie, the idea of a rapped verse & sung chorus, among other things

i was listening to the inventor of the remix & dub innovator himself earlier, king tubby. any love?

I never see Cee Lo waited highly. Ever. And I do post on hip hop forums.... everyone forgets completely about him.

I can understand your arguement for Redman not being underrated since most people who know what they're talking about do wait those first three highly, but a lot of people judge him based on his new album or Doc's The Name and say he's trash, or at least the people I meet.

not only did jamaica create the concept of rapping (first known example dating back to '52), but also the art of deejay’ing, remixing, dub & electronic music. & thanks to two of the worlds most famous taxi drivers, sly & robbie, the idea of a rapped verse & sung chorus, among other things

i was listening to the inventor of the remix & dub innovator himself earlier, king tubby. any love?

I appreciate all types of music, never really followed it much but I did get a chance to catch the Black Seeds about 6 months ago here in Sydney, they went off pretty good. Lots of Kiwis I know here too are right into their dub/reggae.

Game is just as "hip hop" as Rakim. But, not a fan of him at all. Regardless of the fact that it's all semantics, in my opinion, hip hop is a culture and rap is an element of it, so anyone who raps is automatically "hip hop". Regardless of how terrible the rapper is.

Honestly, all of those guys are either past their prime (Gza, TI, Ice Cube, LL) or just not releasing good music (Hell Rell, Jeezy, Game). Haven't heard Common Market, though.

You might like Common Market. He is on the same level with The Blue Scholars coming from Seattle.

But I also see T.I. and GZA coming out with some solid releases.

I agree about LL, and im wishing the Ice Cube's will be good.

I always liked Hell Rell's stuff from Dipset compared to the rest of the group.

Jezzy is good radio hip hop and I will probably like a couple of the songs and The Game has had some good mixtapes lately so as long as he doesnt name drop alot on this album it should be to bad, also alot of people are making some apperances on it that usually do a good job.

I actually really liked the mixtapes from a while back from Game where basically every song was about 50 (the ones with Poison Bananas, 300 bars, etc)... but Iw ent back to them recently and they just weren't even half as good as I remember them to be and I changed it off pretty quick... I still like Budden's mixtapes though :-p

I agree. Personally, the only member of Dipset I care about is Cam, and that's because Confessions of Fire/Children of the Corn/SDE were great.... he changed and became shitty with just good beats.

Juelz is decent, though.

EDIT : After listening to Murs, I can safely say that he isn't topping 3:16 9th Edition. There are some good tracks but on the whole it is forgettable.

The Nappy Roots is setting up to be a letdown. Pole Position and Flex are garbage tracks. They aren't going to fuck with their older releases either :-(

Clipse are so overrated. I love their stuff, but it is not classic like XXL and everyone else seems to think. They would have to be able to finish a verse properly in order for that to be the case.

I do like this new album though. Not as good as Lord Willing or Hell Hath No Fury. I'm hoping the loss of Neptunes beats on Til the Casket Drops does something to make them sound stronger.

Well...

Nas - Illmatic
Raekwon - OB4CL
Wu Tang - 36 Chambers
Method Man - Tical
Ghostface - Supreme Clientele
Gza - Liquid Swords
Rakim - Paid In Full
ATCQ - Low End Theory
Scarface - Mr. Scarface is Back
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
Kool G Rap and DJ Polo - Road to the Riches
2Pac - Me Against the World
Common - Ressurection
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Snoop Dog - Doggystyle
DOC - No One can Do it Better
Slick Rick - Great Adventures of
De La Soul - Is Dead
Pete Rock and CL Smooth - Return of the Mecca

There is maybe one on this list that I don't actually like (NWA) but otherwise it's a pretty generic top 20. To be honest... getting into it will be harder with this list than one based on people's personal preference to be honest as some of these albums are dated and others are just not as accessible on first listen.

My favorite three beatmakers would be Organized Noize, the Rza, and DJ Premier. There are tons of other greats like Pete Rock though.

The best software for making beats is probably Frooty Loops, just bootleg it with a crack or keygen. 9th Wonder is a good example of a guy who uses it to its full potential. There is really no good freeware in my opinion.

Best bet to make actual beats is to spend money on an MPC, though.

Quik is good, but that whole addiction thing was hilarious. I can't believe he tried to pull that shit.

Honestly, there is no doubt in my mind that DJ Premier is the best hip hop producer ever. I mean, he produced all the Gangstarr albums (regardless of my dislike for Guru the beats are fire), The Sun Rises in the East, and a slew of classic tracks such as D'evils and NY State of Mind...

I see Blackout! 2 being better than Red Gone Wild, I saw a short video clip of Redman in the studio and it sounded pretty solid, OB4CL2 I also think should be great, Production wise they have everyone who should be working on it throwing down some beats. and Dre has been one of my favorite producers since I first put on Straight Outta Compton and I always love the stuff he does.

When it comes to OB4CL2 for me, the only person who should be producing it is Rza. I don't like the way Red's flow has changed so much, it's just not as good as it once was.... and I've always found Dre boring.

RZA and Busta are exec producers, Dr. Dre and Erick Sermon are two of the main producers for OB4CL2, I still think Red's flow was best in Malpractice, and he has said he is wanting to go back to more of his older sound. The main reason I like Dre is he can take a very simple beat and make it sound sick, im not a big fan of over producing albums.

The G-Funk sound has been played out since Regulators for me, thus the reason I barely listen to Dre anymore. Red's flow was best on Dare iz a Darcside for me... Personally, I don't want Busta, Dre, or Sermon to be producing a Raekwon album. I'd prefer it if he kept it in the Wu-Family instead of going to other people.
