This has probably been done before, but as far as grunge is concerned, I was wondering which band people preferred. I'm a Nirvana man myself, but feel free to weigh in and give reasons for why you chose what you did.

how can pearl jam possibly be winning this...? nirvana is arguably the greatest band of all time, and founded grunge. smells like teen spirit is probably the most influential song of all time! No question it's Nirvana...

(haha no pearl jam fans have commented yet... only true grunge fans comment?)

What an ignorant comment. Nirvana was NOT the founder of grunge.. And Nirvana is far from even being a remote possibility for greatest band of all-time.

Nirvana fans are hilarious because they cannot admit that the band only released ONE good album. ONE.. Nevermind.. That's it..

I really didn't want to bring this up either, but how are you a "real grunge fan" when the grunge scene was prominent almost 10-15 years ago, which makes you either not born or 4 years old.

Pearl Jam > Nirvana..

I agree they're not the greatest band ever. A more appropriate comment would have been that they were one of the most influential bands of all time. With that being said, I have to disagree with you on them only releasing one good album. I'm far from a huge Nirvana fan (although I did vote for them in this poll), but I think both "Nevermind" and "In Utero" are very, very good. Considering they only had 3 true albums, that's not a bad ratio (and I wouldn't exactly call "Bleach" terrible, but I'm not a huge fan of it). Also, my personal favorite album of theirs was "MTV Unplugged in New York." It was obviously live, but the song selection and different side they showed was pretty incredible in my opinion.

I like a lot of Pearl Jam, but there's also a lot of stuff they've released that I just can't stand. I'm not too big on anything they've come out with since Binaural which was 2000 if I recall.

tough choice, but i went with nirvana.

Nirvana has one amazing album ('Nevermind') while Pearl Jam has a bunch of good albums... and for me its quality not quantity.

I have to disagree about the album thing too. I think In Utero was much much better than Nevermind.

And you're a bit off on your chronology. The grunge scene was big in the late 80's and then started getting mainstream attention around 1990/91/92. So really we're talking closer to 20 years ago. But that doesn't mean someone who was very young or not born then can't be a real fan. I'm a huge fan of a lot of different bands and styles of music that existed way before I was born.

I'd probably put Nirvana and Pearl Jam as just about equal. Nirvana was more consistent, but Pearl Jam are a lot better musically and have released a lot more material. But I'm just not really big on grunge anyway. My favorite Seattle band is The Posies, who were lightyears away from the type of stuff these guys were playing.

Album wise, yes, two albums out of three, great ratio.. Pearl Jam's first 3 releases were spectacular.. Ten, VS, Vitalogy. I didn't really like No Code or Yield, but Binaural is my personal favorite.

Granted my chronology was off, what I meant was its heyday was 10 to 15 years ago.. Sure, someone that was not born or extremely young can be a fan of the music, they can't really relate to the scene.. I can almost put money on it that someone this young has never heard of the bands that started the scene.

it's easy to sit there and say that Nirvana was the best, because that's what everyone tells you.. I personally think Pearl Jam was the best, with Alice in Chains being second. I never caught onto what Nirvana was about or released..

And didn't Mudhoney invented Grunge? Or were at least one of the bands to apply that style of sound into their music way before Nirvana?

Nirvana was both a very influential and a pretty good band, but Pearl Jam is often downright transcendent (e.g. "Nothingman" still gives me chills).

when i think of generic/overrated radio rock bands that spawned countless wanna-be's, i go with pearl jam. i like a couple songs by each band, of course, but neither was great imo. the last kiss cover is one of my favorites of all time though, and i liked creed (most successful pearl jam writing-cover band) and matchbox 20, so yeah...
