We got some chuckles when they blurred out the aliens face during the interview but I thought that was cool.
Here is the plot for it as well.
DISTRICT 9 depicts a fictional world where extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa.

I like how they put "fictional world" to make sure some dumbass isn't like "Oh my god those Africans are hiding some aliens!"

If you guys are interested in this movie you probably want to check out the short film this is based off of, "Alive in Joburg." The director of this movie, Neil Blomkamp was originally suppose to direct the Halo movie. So if District 9 is successful we may be getting Halo on the big screen.

blomkamp is gonna blow up after this.
dude's fucking talented.
All I know is I spent two years in South Africa doing missionary work, and when I saw this trailer I almost died. It's going to be so awesome!
And by that I mean why the crap is the alien's face blurred out? :-(
AH! I miss those accents... Any release date for this yet? aka am I incompetent in finding things online?

this looks pretty good.
this is the same guy that directed the Halo Live Action Skirmish on Halo 3 right? From the trailer it looks like he uses the same aspect ratio/depth and it almost looks like the same thing. If its anything like that the action this is going to be cool as fuck, because that halo live action skirmish gave me a hard on.

I think it has a better chance in the foreign market than it does here. I think they should have pushed the marketing for it earlier. Plus, it is rated R. I think you need to have a broad base audience, which I don't feel this has.

Well on a lighter note, they can look forward to becoming a cult classic!

uhhh Peter Jackson and a guy with ties to Halo 3, one of the best console selling video game franchises ever... and you are going to think this is going to bomb? what sort of idiot pills are you on?
there has been viral marketing for this movie for almost a year+ now are you fucking blind? live under a rock? I have no clue.
I am not saying the movie itself is going to be good, but it will make its money. I see a cult DVD fanbase developing for this film.

I'm just speculating myself. I have my doubts it will do as well as you think. I like the marketing plan, the short film, and well, everything about it. I just don't see it grossing as much as you suspect.

the short film had no relevence to the marketing of this movie, this movie is a basis of that short film, the ideas behind it... there is really no connection, that's almost like saying I enjoy Adam West so I am going to like the Dark Knight.

Haha okay Mike. I know it isn't really exactly related. It just seems like the piece is a huge influence and is at least a little bit relevant. Seeing it definitely hyped me for the movie.
This is why I miss you posting in gen.
it is a huge influence because it was made by the fucking same guy, and so was this:

ACTUALLY I just thought you should know, your wrong. Peter Jackson was supposed to do the Halo movie, but it fell through. So he moved on to produce a new movie, District 9, which is a full length feature based off of the short film "Alive in Joburg" by Neill Blomkamp (the director of District 9). It has NOTHING to do with Halo.

It has NOTHING to do with Halo. That's true, but this film only cost $30 million to make and its effects and dramatization all look amazing, which could have been money and assets applied to a Halo film. In some ways I'm sad to see Halo not be given that same treatment, because as much as people think the game is just a generic alien-shooting videogame, there's a lot of emotional depth and nuance that could be applied to its universe if someone like Neil Whats-His-Last name took on the project.
Of course, if a Halo movie does come out, it will be probably just be another GI-Joe with Master Chief instead of Heavy Duty. I do love the look of District 9 though, and on the flipside it's cool that a new sci-fi world can be constructed and adored by the movie fans.

97% on rotten tomatoes, damn.
with all these 90+ user ratings now I am going into this with high expectations. Which sucks, I kind of wanted it to be shitty and hope I was in the minority who thought it was good. Now I am expecting this movie to jump out and give me a blowjob or I'll be disappointed. Elitists are setting the bar high here.

Mike you're wrong too haha. He did create that Halo short film, but Neill Blomkamp was also working on a Halo film for around 5-6 months until the move studios trashed it due to complications with Microsoft's legal team and Hollywood. Basically after Halo bombed he decided to work on a full length of his short film "Alive In Joburg" which became District 9. He has stated recently that he would most likely never go back to making Halo again due to the fact that he put in half a years worth of work into it just to have it trashed and he couldn't handle it again. Rumors are that Steven Spielberg is picking up the rights to the Halo franchise. Neill Blomkamps next movie is going to be another original scifi story which he describes as "being on another planet, and very very very bloody".
Fuck, I thought there were gonna be a lot of midnight showings for this, but it's slim. I can't even buy tickets online yet.

very creative and original take on an "alien" movie.
i really liked how it switched from the journalism style to the outside viewer. cant think of correct terms right now.
but yes, very good film, not at all what i expected.
with all these 90+ user ratings now I am going into this with high expectations. Which sucks, I kind of wanted it to be shitty and hope I was in the minority who thought it was good. Now I am expecting this movie to jump out and give me a blowjob or I'll be disappointed. Elitists are setting the bar high here.
If I hadn't drank two Monsters within the two hours before I saw it, this movie would have given me two Z-jobs.
Really good movie, will talk more about it tomorrow.

It has NOTHING to do with Halo.
lol owned
I love when people post things they "heard on the street" as fact.
The world is ending tomorrow. It's definitely true. Someone told me.

The marketing purposely didn't show any true aspects of the story so people wouldn't know what to expect when coming in to the theatre. Hell what did you honestly expect? I just can't think of a reason to be disappointed in it. Flat characters? I don't think I've ever felt so bad for a CGI being in my entire life. Also, the actor who played Wikus has never been in a movie or acting role before and did an outstanding job, I don't see any of it as flat. The explosions only added to the "wow" factor of some of those moments, I mean who the hell complains about people blowing up?

exactly the same for me. On the drive home, it hit me that I actually felt for the being during the film and Wikus was fantastic in my opinion.
So 1st of all, this movie really surprised me. I thought it was going to be a very story heavy movie but the 3rd chunk of the movie was story driven action which is great.
At first, you don't know how to feel about Wickus. He's obviously a bit of a pushover so you feel bad for how people seem to call him nothing special, a bit dumb, etc, but he too seems to hold some prejudice against the aliens too. Of course, as the story moves along, the character grows and starts to see how hard it is being "Different" when they start to perform experiments on him and when he does things like saving Christopher (I believe his name was?).
That's one thing I didn't think they worked on enough. The relationship between Wickus and Christopher or as a matter of fact, they didn't show us enough of what the alien race is like. When Christopher got in the ship and started using all the commands or when they developed the mechanical suit for the crime lord, those were 2 times when I thought to myself, "These aliens are extremely intelligent, how are they taking this crap?" That was basically my only gripe.
Another thing I loved about the movie was, I'm a sucker for revenge and boy did every character get his in the end except Wickus' father-in-law. I clapped so many times in this movie, sometimes I was alone, haha. Is it bad that I loved watching humans blow up but felt bad for the aliens?
There's a lot of things left to discuss still about this movie. Was it all about segregation or about guns? Will Christopher keep his promise and bring reinforcements? Should there even be a sequel or should it be left alone? Do you actually agree with some of the people who wanted them gone?
I remember one of the 1st lines in the movie was something like, "I don't care if your from another country, but if your not from this planet, you're not welcome here." It made me sad to hear that but even worse is the fact that humans still do this to eachother today.

I just got back from seeing this movie. It was such an amazing film. I love how, for once, the humans were not the victims, but the enemy. I have to say that the only thing i wished was different was that they explained more about aliens. Other than that it was a moving film. I don't think is was so much about aliens coming in from outer space, but more about how the human race are for the most part greedy, controling and hostile. It's ashame that this actually goes on. I hate to admit it but I did cry towards the end, it was just hard to see people (or ailens in this case) being treated like dirt. I think it should be left alone. I would hate for it to be ruined by a shitty sequel, but like that he left it open for one. Great film!
P.S. The Goods was funny as hell.

Just see the movie. You'll love it. It's touching, action-packed, and smart. It's not scary due to the fact that they humanized the aliens so much, showing a different side to aliens that isn't the typical ravaging scary beast.

The aliens were submissive because they came from their planet as refugees. They were malnourished and their ship was raided by humans and they were put into refugee camps. They were not THAT submissive considering all that they went through, and considering most of their weapons were taken from them. Why South Africa? Well, I don't think there was a reason why. That's just where they landed. But obviously the director chose South Africa because of the camps in Johannesburg and how it reflects what humans do to the aliens in the movie.

I thought this movie was great. I loved the documentary style in the beginning and how it really felt like a retelling of this man's story. I know he was a real dick but I think that's what's interesting. How does a man who is obviously prejudiced deal in the situation he's in? I'm glad a more selfless part of himself won out in the end, and I like that they left the ending ambiguous. I'd like to think Christopher eventually returned, but whether or not Wikus would change back after living among the aliens for so long, I dunno. It's interesting. I also agree that it was pleasant to see us be the bad guys for once, seeing as how that's probably how it would really go down. I really felt so terrible for the aliens, and also for Wikus when he was experimented on and forced to kill that Prawn. It was a really gut-wrenching film in places.

I go to the theater 20 minutes early, and 3/4 of the theater was full, I freaked because my group got there late and we had to sit right in front of the screen, but it wasn't too bad. I even talked somebody into seeing the movie while we were waiting in line. They asked me what the huge crowd was for, and then he asked me to explain it, so I did. When I went and saw the movie, I unfortunately chose to sit in the row in front of a bunch of tool bags who were laughing at every little thing and yelling crap at the screen. During the scene where Wilkus is forced to shoot the Prawn, they howled with laughter, and I turned around and told them to shut up in a not so pleasant kind of way. That scene was intense.

And I agree with "SlappedActor". I got back from the midnight showing, and trust me: I wouldn't go to a midnight showing when I had work in the morning unless I REALLY wanted to like the film, but I still felt a bit let down.
The visuals were fantastic. The lead actor was phenomenal and honestly almost too human.
My big complaints have to do with the cheese. I think this film could have worked a lot better for me specifically if they replaced half of the popcorn-explosion-action at the end and used it to develop the aliens or the humans a bit better. The humans were un-repentantly evil and the Prawns weren't developed at all. Why was Christopher Johnson so intelligent in comparison to the other Prawns? Why did their Mothership crash on Earth but still retain enough power to stay levitating above Johannesburg? Why did alien "rocket fuel" do what it did to Wikus? Why were the aliens still trapped on the ship? If there was an escape pod, that CJ obviously knew how to work, how come they didn't free themselves instead of waiting for humans to saw them out?
In a way the questions the film leaves the viewer with are more interesting than the actual film. Don't get me wrong. I loved seeing how raw and shitty humans could be and I loved the intense action scenes I just..I guess I just wish the film was as "revolutionary" and "intelligent" as everything I read made it out to be.
TLDNR:
Standing on it's own, as a film and without my own hype, I enjoyed it. Wikus was interesting and he acted as a human truly would. CJ and little Alien were sympathetic and, honestly, the only likable characters in the film. The visuals were top notch and the premise was interesting but I just felt..left down. 7.5/10

Well it said that the machines/weapons that the aliens used we're made to only work with their DNA so I'm guessing that included the mothership. So the rocket fuel contained some alien DNA.

I respect you opinion. Let me first say I loved the movie, A LOT. In regards to your questions/problems with the movie (Why was Christopher Johnson intelligent?, etc...), why does EVERYTHING in a movie need to be explained? I mean, I would actually hate that. Why was Christopher Johnson more intelligent? Well, why was Albert Einstein more intelligent than people, why are some people better athletes than others? They just are. Why were the aliens trapped on the ship? They weren't trapped I dont think, they were just extremely malnourished and needed help. If they went into detail about all the specifics of the aliens and the technology behind them, it would totally ruin the movie imo.

Seriously. I hate when a review is filled with plot questions. I don't want everything explained, that would be awful. And even if you try in a movie, especially a sci-fi movie, someone will always find a question to ask.

exactly, just like LOST, everyone wants answers to EVERYTHING, they dont realize that the show is almost completely based off mysteries, thats what keeps you interested and coming back for more.

There were a lot of people who knew the alien language, they were there for 20 years.

This movie reminded me how much I miss "older" horror movies like Halloween, where the movie relied on freaking an audience out by actual suspense and the characters' fear, not ridiculous amount of blood and carnage. I know, this wasn't a horror movie, but all the ripping out of teeth and flesh mutating was way over the top and too intense for me. Really loved the plot though and though it was well executed, but I don't think anyone could pay me to see that again.
Anyone else do a double take when Wikus just randomly started calling him Christopher?

Well when he first came in he said Christopher Johnson, formally, and I think once he figured out how smart he was he started using it casually, since it was his friend and all

Just saw it tonight. I really enjoyed it, but then again I hadn't seen much hype going into it so I didn't know what to expect.
One plot goof that bugged me more than it should (SPOILER ALERT):
When Wikus and Christopher Johnson are breaking into MNU to get the fuel back, Wikus opens the doors by typing in an access code and using a thumbprint. This is after he's been taken to that very room and experimented on. Lolwut?

i have questions!!!!
1. How awesome does zombieland look.
2. Why Johannesburg
3. So what was that thing that fell from the spaceship? Was it ever recovered? And why were the prauns all malnourished when they were found? Was the leader killed? Just what the heck happened!?
4. As far as I can tell, the "liquid" does 2 things...powers spacecraft and turns humans into prauns. Why did the liquid turn humans into prauns? What purpose did that serve when all the Prauns wanted to do was vacate Earth?
5. It took 20 years to gather that tiny amount of liquid that was collected in the tube. Then Wicker goes spraying some of it into his face...I mean, he sprayed a good amount on his face, right? So, maybe I'm crazy, but wouldn't they need to re-collect that liquid for another few years? Seems like he was powering the mothership with a half a battery, but it somehow worked out alright.
6. Why did they spell prawn "praun."
7. How did humans and prauns learn eachother's languages? Praun sounds hard to learn.
8. What exactly were the scientists doing to those alien cadavers in the hospital?
9. Why did Wicker's father in law choose him to lead the alien relocation when he hated Wicker?
10. That "badass" military guy wasn't so tough. I woulda blasted him when i was in the robosuit. not really a question, just sayin
11. Was Christopher supposed to come back to save the aliens in 3 years, too? I mean, he just kinda left. And told Wicker he'd be back to turn him human. What about the rest of the aliens? He didn't take anybody but his son with him.
12. Why was the "non bullet proof vest guy" wearing an orange jumper, awaiting trial for exposing what was going on at the lab? Why would they arrest a guy for calling out a corporation for their questionable ethics and practices regarding the prauns?
Maybe they are questions that the audience is supposed to be left with...and maybe most are open to interpretation, but I was thinking about these things during the entire film.
Thanks a lot

2. Johannesburg might serve as the backdrop because of a lose connection to apartheid.
3. Are you serious? It was the command module for the mothership (the fucking spaceship that Christopher flew away in.)
4. I think the liquid contains alien DNA. Hence why it turned Wikus into a Praun when it entered his bloodstream. They said the weapons would only work in conjunction with alien DNA, so I'm guessing that the spaceship was the same.
12. Corporations are corrupt. Governments are corrupt. Corporations and government are intertwined.
That's all I've got.
