trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPoZWP2738k)

I was interested ever since I learned that Bryan Singer and Chris McQuarrie were teaming up again (the duo behind Usual Suspects) and the cast is brilliant: Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard and Stephen Fry. Looking forward to a new trailer at some point.

I must say, I like the way it appears to have been directed, but it looks pretty bad. And is anyone else kind of taken back that Cruise didn't even attempt an accent?

It looks alright. I might see it.
And yeah, Tom Cruise has no accent at all.

Yeah this has been a big controversy from the beginning too. The family of the man he's portraying did not want him cast due to his recent shenanigans with Scientology and then when the footage was previewed, everyone started saying the same thing you guys are saying. I don't get it either....I mean he's playing a German guy....why not even an attempt at an accent?

Great, a movie about Germans who sound nothing like Germans. Oh wait, he directed X-Men, that adds even more credibility to this.

Fuck, this sounds on paper like such an interesting movie.

Ah...Tom Cruise. Maybe this wasn't the role for him, but he can still lay down some magnificent roles despite his real-life antics.

I'm pretty excited for this. The story is ripe for hollywood, in fact I'm surprised it took them this long to make.

Tom Cruise is my only issue. He has one character, and while he's good at playing that one character, I'm not sure he can pull it off as a Nazi officer. I liked the Last Samurai, but no way in hell did I buy him as Civil War officer.

It's like Steve Buscemi in "The Grey Zone". That was hilarious to watch. Playing a Hungarian Jew in Auschwitz, and he talks like he does in every other movie.

Lets not forget Harvey's awful attempt at a german accent in Grey Zone. For me if you can't do something, or know you'll fail at it misserable, you're probably better off, for the sake of the movie, not doing it all.

I just back from seeing this with my girlfriend. I thought it was very good. As for the concerns about the lack of german accent, in the beginning, he's speaking in german as he narrates, and then it fades into English and everyone is speaking it. They keep everything that is written or typed in german, so it's almost as if you are watching with a translating filter for the dialogue.

The movie would be a lot better if it had about 30 more minutes of quality characterization. I didn't really feel for the characters all that much. Not enough background, especially on Cruise's character.

Also, most movies that are set in Europe but are in English, the actors have British-sounding accents so they at least sound European if they aren't speaking the native language of the country of setting. Everyone in this movie did this...except Tom Cruise. It was so awkward.

I absolutely hate this tradition in Hollywood. I refuse to go see movies about foreigners with American--any English-speaking country--actors playing them and not speaking a foreign tongue. I don't care what accent they put on, it's stupid and just dumbed-down Hollywood shit for stupid, lazy audiences. If I go to see a movie about Nazis they better be speaking fucking German. Same case with that new Daniel Craig movie Defiance I saw the preview for. He thinks that by putting on an accent I'll believe him as someone from Poland.

I'm not going to lie. I would absolutely hate Valkyrie if it was all in German. It's not a History channel biopic. It's a popcorn movie.

Not everything needs to be exactly true to form. Putting it all in German would have also been studio suicide.

Lol. Just cuz it's authentic doesn't mean it has to be a history channel biopic. It could just be a well-done movie with subtitles. A movie can be entertaining and "true to form." But I think popcorn movies are stupid so that's where we differ.

Nothing about the movie, but Tom Cruise has pretty much gone off the deep end with the crazy. Not sure if that will be reflected in his acting or not.

Just from reading this page, I'm going to say most will disagree with me, but I thought this was actually a pretty damn solid movie. Entertaining throughout, and kept me on my toes even though I knew they weren't going to be very successful with their mission. Quality acting throughout.

Haha, I was being entirely serious, not nitpicking.

I just saw The Reader and it takes place in Germany and not once were there any subtitles. It didn't bother me because everyone had a realistic accent* while speaking English and it all seemed plausible.

* From IMDb: The Reader is in English with the actors speaking with German accents. In an interview here, David Hare (screenwriter) reveals that they used a dialect coach (William Conacher) to direct the English actors. German-born David Kross, who plays young Michael Berg, actually had to learn English to play the part.

His Les Grossman blew me away... I usually love his acting.
His character in this was good, not great though, just like the entire movie.
I didn't hate it at least.

Meh I can deal with it most of the time as long as they all have a the same or a believable accent, such as in Enemy at the Gates.

I have to admit, Tom Cruise and his complete disregard of even trying a German accent did distract me a bit. At first when he was speaking German at the beginning, I was thinking to myself "hmmm...this is going to be good" and then he started talking like Tom Cruise and my mind immediately started flashing "lolwut?" Eventually you got used to it.

Regardless of the aforementioned disregard and the fact that he was rather disfigured throughout, I still think Cruise was excellent. He may be a kooky bastard, but I almost always enjoy his movies. The amount of actors that pull that off I can count on one hand.

I would much rather have a film lack in the historical accuracy department than have shitty unbelievable accents. In my opinion, there's almost nothing that immediately drags down a movie than bad fake accents. I figured that they just kept it in English to avoid that and avoid detracting from the plot.

I loved this film, it wasn't perfect but the cast was strong all around and the pacing for the last 45 minutes was intense. I think it's a testament to solid directing and screenwriting when history dictates the way the story goes and yet I still found myself riveted to the very end.
