i have one

but only use it 2 or 3 times in an average week, usually only text message. they're obviously good to have if you go out a lot and need a ride etc. but we've survived without them in the past.

for instance, if i'm on a train coming home from someplace at about 5pm, there's always men on the train coming home from work, who take out their cell phones and call their wives just to say they're on their way home. the wife of course KNOWS that he's on his way home without that phonecall, but because he has a phone in his pocket he uses it to call her.

that's a nice waste of money every night.

but otherwise, if you need one all the time (eg college as paul posted) then they're obviously necessary ..

i've had to use mine every day this week, but only because I have exams on which are held at the community centre a while away from where I live. So, I gotta call my parents when we're finished exams and such

I'm not that social and stuff and my school does provide a phone plan...I have very very few friends (one or two maybe) and I doubt I'll call em much...so the phone isn't a necessity...I think it's best for emergencies and stuff...I dunno.

I HATE cell phones with a passion. They are ruining our society, people are walking around talking on cell phones and not even speaking to the people that they're actually with. I see these people all the time with no respect, they walk up to purchase something and tell the cashier to hold on because they need to answer their phone. I HATE THIS i wish people would have a little more respect than this. You don't need a cell phone i have plenty of friends and no cell phone and somehow i manage to survive. There are pay phones in numerous places around the world you know.

dude I wish I had friends like yours...all my friends cept for like one (he hates cell phones but has one and is the only one to seriously use it for emergencies only)...all my other firends though...they're like "we don't liek calling your house" which is so fucked up...with cell phones...I would get billed if they called me in my own house even though they can just call my home phone where it charges me nothing...man. I mean, i'm not out against cell phones cause I understand they can be important if you're stranded in the middle of nowhere or something...and you're right, more people should have respect to not go on their cell phones when it's clearly unnecessary. It's fucked up when you're out with your friends and they ignore calls from their parents who wanna check up on them (the whole reason why they have cell phones is cause their parents bought it for em)...you're right man...these little kids with cell phones...totally disrespecting elders and shit...fucked up.

I'm in college, and I think that cell phones have seriously gotten out of control on campus. Kids don't turn them off during class, and I have had several professors ask kids to leave the room until they can get some respect. If a person wants to use a cell phone that's great, but when they start to interfere with my life I get pissed off. It's all a status symbol and it makes a lot of unimportant people feel like they're part of a group, just like $8 dollar coffee from Starbucks.

I know not all cell phone users are the same, so please spare me the whole "your generalizing" routine.

I agree with you man..I hate cell phones!!! as you can tell from my previous banter. Don't get me wrong i think they're an incredible invention for emergencies. But i see these people leaving there house...like literally just got out of the house and they whip out their phones and make a call. DUDE YOU WERE JUST IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!! MAKE THE CALL IN THERE AND SAVE SOME CASH!! no one cares your cool enough to spend $100 a month to pretend you have sooooo.... many friends you need a device to keep in contact with them at all times of the day.

a cell phone is essential to my life in college because, well, freshman year i was rarely in my room. so it's not like i used that phone. i HAD to use a cell.

plus, it came in handy so many times. standing outside a party and you need to get a hold of someone to come out and let you in? use the cell. walking to class and you forget something you need? use the cell to call your roommie and tell him to meet you with it.

i mean, i can name countless situations. if you're never in your room or apartment (like me), then you need one.
